Planted Aquarium - The BIGGEST Advice I Can Give Your Aquarium

  • Planted aquarium advice. This is the biggest tip i can give anyone for their planted aquarium (or any kind of fishtank) If you understand how this nitrogen cycle works, you will have a much easier time with you planted tank.
So Today I want to break down the single biggest tip I can give you for your planted aquarium. Everyone wants to know how to get a better looking planted tank, “My Plants won’t Grow” My fish are sick, I want a carpet. All of these things can be achieved with a simple understanding of some important, yet simple concepts, that once you have mastered will make everything else easier, ‘
We are going to unpack today just the tip of the iceberg here, but once you understand this simple concept, this simple goal, we can move on to more detailed areas of this conversation. Each component of what I am going to break down from a high level deserves much more details and we will flush this out more, once we hammer home the core concept So let’s start here.
I am going to begin by talking about the fundamental starting point and move on from there. We are going to start with the basics of the nitrogen cycle , then I am going to give you the often over looked and what I believe is the biggest tip I can give you.
Ok. So as many of you know we Start with the basics of Ammonia (NH3) This is caused by fish waste, decaying plant matter un eaten food, anything that is breaking down in your tank.
NOW- This is Toxic to your fish. So, as many of you already know, we want to take our time to Cycle our fish tank. By cycling we mean allowing time for these various phases to take place, let’s break these down.
Step one it to convert Ammonia to Nitrites- This is the stepping stone, we are half way home at this point if you will. We are going from NO2 to NO3 which is Nitrates. So we are going from Nitrites which are Toxic to Nitrates- Which are not toxic.
NOW- This should be nothing new here, however somehow people forget about our friend Mother Nature. Plants Absorb NITRATE, now before I jump into the biggest advice I can give you, I want to make sure we understand that JUST BECAUSE WE CAN”T SEE Them doesn’t mean we shouldn’t create a home for them.
This Beneficial Bacteria, Nitrosomonas and NitrosSpira, while they are Not Visibel, they are INSANELY IMPORTANT and should not be over looked.
This beneficial bacteria needs at a home, “Are you too good for your home?!”
The Vast Majority of your beneficial bacteria lives in your substrate, gravel, whatever you wanna use. So, we want to make sure we have this setup and going. I like to wait a month- yes 30 days before we start adding fish. Notice I said fish NOT PLANTS, Generally speaking, I we can add plants almost instantly. There are some things we can do to grow our bio load faster.

I'm coming from the realm of aquaponics and I would have to say that this is the first thing taught in the hobby. This is super important with aquaponics because we aim to never do water changes and grow as many plants as possible all the while keeping our fish healthy even in super high stocking densities and grow out feeding schedules. The nitrogen cycle is very well explained in some of the aquaponics videos out there. Dustin does pretty good here but some other vids have better tools for getting the info organized and presented, such as animated clips and charts. Love what your doing here D. Tank on baby!

Thanks Dustin for the great info! Iv'e watch a tone of videos on the net about the nitrogen cycle and your simple white board helps a lot. I'm a dude who needs visuals man! I'm also a newbie who killed all his fish the first time around with new tank syndrome so I've dove head first into the dirted planted aquarium. Accept this time i'm taking it slow. Been cycling the take and adding plants for weeks now, just added all the plants I got from you a few days ago so it'll probably be another month before I begin to add fish. The one question I have is how do you know when you have a good amount of beneficial bacteria? Thanks again! You rock bro! Don't stop doin' what you're doin'!

Just a note, I believe that more important than the water was the previously used filter. You see, "cycled" refers to a tank with enough good bacteria to hold fish and said bacteria Is not in the water but in surfaces such as filter ceramic noodles, sponges, etc.

That's why planted tanks should read 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite and a very minimal Nitrate reading to be considered healthy for your fish. I cycle with snails and seed everyday from already established tanks or swap out an already used and bacteria established filter.

Shrimp have so little waste, they can't keep the growing beneficial bacteria alive and these bacteria starve. Once all the beneficial bacteria are dead, the shrimp waste will just collect in the tank and the shrimp will die of ammonia poisoning. Watch flip aquatics videos to learn all about how to keep shrimp.

I actually think that the most important thing in order to have your good bacteria to complete the nitrogen cycle is your filter. Without the filter you cannot rely on the substrate to house the good bacteria. Your fully cycled filter can go anywhere with your fish and they will be fine. Having said that, I do like Dustin and his videos.

  • @AquaticHaus

Dude so unprepared on the markers...should’ve used green for nh4 purple for no2 and orange or red for no3 so they would correspond to the api test kit colors... but either way epic fish detail! You should’ve have been an artist 😂 the poop was so detailed I could smell it through my iPad 😷
Ok now to the serious part.. aquatic plants don’t remove nitrates until they fill up on ammonia first.. you know this but you should’ve explained that for the most part... plants reduce nitrates by removing ammonia before it’s converted to nitrite and then nitrate... less ammonia means less nitrates...
