    Thank you! Thank you!
    I played D&D as a 6th grader in the 1970s (yeah, I’m old). Recently got invited to play 5th ed with some friends of friends & LOVED IT! We did a home brew campaign for about 6 months, and now a different group member who got the Savage Worlds Kickstarter is running it for us.
    But...I got talked into running Dragons of Icespire Peak by a co-worker who can’t find a group. I’ve never been a GM before, and I’m barely able to play my OWN characters! Of course, he insists on playing some quirky, uncommon race/class combo, and I’m tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to do this! Your ideas are going to be tremendously helpful to me!

    Got to say I really really like your videos my friend. I think your extremely like minded in the way you run your games to me. The only difference is I’m currently running a 1 on 1 with my wife (sometimes 2 when my son drops in and out) I’m used to running for between 4 to 8 players for Ad&d or 3.5. But running the 2 5E box sets combined for a large campaign for them, has been the best thing I’ve ever done in 35 years Roleplaying. I have or had 3 npc’s in the party (mage, rogue,cleric) and two primary players, my son Fighter and wife paladin, they have rescued Sildar from the caves, agathas lair, butterskull ranch, old owl well, wyvern tor, the shrine of savras and have just destroyed the red brand presence in Phandalin (including rescuing ‘droop’ who they have insisted becomes the 6th member of the group). They are currently clearing Cragmaw castle to rescue Gundren Rockseeker. But the thing that makes it so great is the love and camaraderie between the PC’s and the npc in the group and in Phandalin. 3 things in particular spring to mind, the first is rescuing The Stonehills dog ‘Rex’ who had been stabbed by a red brand after two village thugs stole the dog but it had broke free from them. The second was when they rescued the brutalised family in the Manor’s dungeon, the two girls in the party (pc and npc) healing these women and protecting them, i found it really poignant. And the last one was when the party found ‘droops’ settlement in neverwinter wood (that had been attacked by slavers) he found his parents bodies lying side by side and fell to his knees and broke down holding them (I play him pretty much like Dobby from Harry Potter - he’s actually a Dankwood goblin from the adventures with Muk children’s book) it ended in tears round the table and my wife swearing if anybody harms the party (including Droop) they will regret it. I let my wife and son be the major voice and leaders in both the group and steadily in the village to make sure they have plenty of agency, but it’s the interactions with all of the npc’s that are creating this wonderful campaign. I’m finding both box sets great.

    Good stuff as always! I agree that the adventure is surprisingly sparse in terms of information that the players and DM could use to build their story around. That said, I really like how easy it is to run in other areas. All the adventures are laid out on a two-page spread, and DMs can pretty much run the adventure by reading it once or maybe even run it on the spot as they read it for the first time. Still, this requires a lot of improvised, emergent storytelling (takes skilled DMs and players) or then the game feels more like a rather story-light ’kill the monsters, take their look and get XP’ adventure.

      I think its a good module for first time players think they left it sparse as to not railrode and allow creativity but the initial setting needs more info my players was asking me whats the setting for creating characters and had to look up sword coast lore to help give them an idea of the area and then gave them some info on phandalin such as its a frontier mining town. I basically had them all start at umbridge hill studing there one an artificer learning alchemy, a wizard learning rituals to summon a familiar, the druid was learning herbs, and the rogue was learning poisons, and the barbarian was tasked as a guard as it being the only place to buy potions it needed protection from bandits for the town.
      I basically had them setup that they have been living there for about a month learning and doing odd jobs and their training was coming to an end and to thank Gwen they were holding a feast, as its the last day there they were telling stories of their past adventures opening backstory dialogue when they awaken the next morning they see large animal tracks that were pacing around the fire and a few broken quills that leave into the grass unable to track with the heavy foliage as foreshadowing for the mantacore when they return later to pass on info about the dragon.
      The rogue got a hook to dwarven excivations where a low level item for his character was to be found that allows him to cast silence or minor illusion once a day.
      And the artificer had a hook to gnomenguard as his backstory was an alchemist who also wanted to research new inventions and plants for making scientific advancemrnts in medicin as well as a special item as an artifiver focus he chose cooking utencils so its a Wok shield that he can purify food and drink in.
      The barbarian a hook to falkons hunting lodge to find a cloak of a barbarian who once fought a bear bare handed from his tribe that gives him damage restiance out of rage.
      The druid hook leads him to the shrine of savras to find a staff that allows him to have the rangers companion from Beast master and use befriend beast a limited times and has other druids there having them solve the mystery in the woods or more necissarily whats causing the disterbances as a mystery quest connected to woodland manse.
      The wizard has a hook to tower of storms to find his item and i have connected to the minor exchange that a dangerous item was sent to the location via the fence as a way for the orcs to help Zhentarim spread fear in phandalin so that they may gain influence making money off the caos and a false positive influence. As the wizards backstory has him wanting to find antient power relics and safe guard them from causing calamity and a side hook to try to stop Zhentarims plans while having the rogue unknowingly try to help Zhentarim to keep his fence contact as its the only way for him to sell stolen good so he is trying to keep the wizard from ruining this connection subversivly without being found out.

    I 'd like to use the Pahndalin adventure just adding Icespire Peak low level places and NPCs.
    Hmm What if the dark "you know who" somehow attarcted or disturbed the dragon? Dragon more neutral and DS evil.

    Nice Advice for this kit. Im gonna be the Dm for the first time and have fresh new players that i have to introduce to Dnd. I read already some parts of the adventure and the whole bounty hunter thing is getting me nervous that my new players would checkout pretty fast thats this adventure is just questing, leveling and doing something for the sake of this little settlement called Phandalin. I hope that i can weave some parts together which u mentioned. Much thanks. If someone has some more hints that i can use I would appreciate them

      I started DMing for the first time a few months ago and we began with this essentials kit. My players have done most of the quests but keet asking about traveling to Neverwinter and questing there. There's nothing actually in the kit for Neverwinter other than suggesting going there to sell stuff at a better price. So I just homebrewed a ton of stuff for Neverwinter after reading through the Neverwinter Campaign Setting, which you can get as a pdf if you look hard enough. With all the information it has on npcs, factions, and events, it's not really that hard to just make up quests for them to do and my players are already 100% more interested in doing them instead of random walking around telling people about a dragon.

    I like the idea of using Halia Thornton as the driver for the quests here. Harbin Wester seems weak. And she's assuming control of the town by having HER goals completed for money. (The Zhentarim way). There needs to be a way to find 'her end goals' as evil though. So she can be the BBEG for this campaign. Maybe have Cryovain as someone who refused to join the Zhent ranks and this is her way of cleaning the slate. It also connects them all better.
    I think the god Talos opposes Bane's Zentharim pushing north and she wants to rid them as well.

    Running this adventure for a rather dark bunch (warlock, assasin, bounty hunter), so your idea of using Halia as adventure hook was just the missing puzzle piece.
    About to start the Adventure next week and here is my adventure hook for my party of total DND newbies.
    Backstory: They already know each other from a gig a few months back where they had to track down a thieving wizard and retrieve a stolen spellbook. Their ability to work efficiently as a team has travelled in some circles and has presented them with a new quest. This backstory will avoid the akward in-character getting to know each other phase which most rookie DND players struggle with.
    Quest Hook:
    Halia Thornton, the guildmaster at Phandalin has contacted you to help her return items stolen from her at a recent robbery.
    On her way to Neverwinter to update the guild records kept there, she and her guards were ambushed by a tribe of Orcs who are roaming the High Road. They slayed four of the orcs and barely managed to get away with their lives on the hourses pulling the cart, leaving the cart and posessions behind.
    Apart from provisions and clothes she lost three items in that raid that she wants to have back.
    A Shield which was handed down for several generations. lost in the melee.
    A Mystery Key which could unlock a door that should remain closed.
    Her black cloak of billowing. she has a rather perosnal attachment to that cloak that she does not wish to discuss it in more detail. A very lucky DC20 insight check might reveal that the attachment is of romantic nature.
    Seeing as those items are not very useful in the hands of common Orcs she expects them to have made their way up the chain of command.
    The Orcs are roaming a lot in the area, looking for a new base after being chased down the mountains by the dragon and she is expecting them to invade a nearby ranch or mansion any time soon. Living outside of the cities is a very dangerous lifestyle at times of these.
    She suggests to start exploring the surrounding locations by completing some of the jobs for Harbor Westin and keep an eye out for orc activity along the way.
    The stolen items indeed went up the chain, to either Orc Chiefs or Anchorites
    Black Cloak of Billowing from Butterskull Ranch (orginally in Woodland Manse, but it would be fun to have the players encounter an orc chief wearing a cowboy hat and the cloak of billowing in the Buterskull Ranch Master Bedroom...)
    Bounty: 100 gp
    Shield +1 from Circle of Thunder (one of the Anchorite got this shield as a payment from the Orcs for their services)
    Bounty: 500 gp
    Mystery Key from Shrine of Savras
    (This key by itself has very little use, but as a plot hook makes it much more interesting. Again, a gift for an Anchorite by the orc tribes)
    Bounty: 200 gp
    Having these items strewn about in locations that are not necessarily job-board quests will keep the players engaged and ultimately keep them around long enough to level up and be the heroes and defeat the dragon :-)
    Let's hope this all pans out as planned (as if it ever does!)

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's an involved plan. Have the players accepted the hook? Keep it simple.

    • @alxdean
      @alxdean 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HowtoRPG good question. I've been struggling with a good hook for some time. we're only playing once a month and last session was character building. I can tie in the character's back stories quite nicely using this plan, seeing that they all err on the darker side of society while battling with their inner demons. I had not tohught of sending through the plot hooks to the players in advance. Should I do that and get their feedback? without all the detail of course. Won't that take away from the fun of starting the adventure on the night?

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm a totally new DM, having last played DND 35 Years ago, only as player. so I'm very green behind the ears. are you suggesting that I present them with different hooks and they pick one, or rather present this hook and get them to provide feedback on how to make it suit them better? it's funny but I actually prefer DoIsp to Lmop about as much as I prefer Strahd to Hoard. a lot of it is minimally written but to the point that it's a good skeleton to build off of and practice building your own campaigns or writing your new stories as a new DM my biggest bone to pick with Doisp is at intervals the new dm is forced to do mountains of prep work, but that said the 1v1 play rules have made for some of the best d&d I have ever been a part of and with sessions of only an hour or so covering what a party takes to do in four to five, its definitely a standout experience.

    • @HowtoRPG
      @HowtoRPG  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The prep is high on Dragon of Icespire Peak for sure. I would imagine that there are Dungeon Masters who don't do much with it, but your stretching the improvising muscles.

    • @fuzzydragon
      @fuzzydragon 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HowtoRPG yeah there are points where a dm might have to prep 5 or more full encounters for a session because it's so wide open at times with no way of telling which way the players will go but the writing of the encounters themselves is so weak that I can't imagine running this purely as written so I take each dungeon as if writing a standalone episode. in the end, this makes LMoP more like prepping a microwave dinner, easy to prep but bland where DoISP is a meal kit that asks you to get your hands dirty as a dm.
