Shot and tested the Witt SME at my buddy's outdoor range last month using a 9mm CMMG AR with a 5" barrel. And the overall impressions from my friends are that the SME is not hearing safe and you must have ears on.
We unsucessfully tried to measure the DB level of the shots with both a current gen iPhone and an older Android phone. We only saw errors seemingly due to the limitations of both phones' mics to capture very loud noises.
So here is the very subjective results:
For giggles, I took my ears off and fired a couple of rounds through the SME. It very much sounded like having loud firecrackers go off in front of my face. My ears lightly rang for less than a minute afterwards.
After resting my hearing for five minutes far away from the firing line, just for more giggles, I tested with the ears off again. This time, I stood about 5-6 feet behind one of my friends while he fired off a few rounds though the SME. It was loud, like being at a concert in the front next to the stacks loud. No ringing in my ears afterward for that test.
With our ears on and if you are the shooter or are observing slightly behind and to either sides of the muzzle, the sound level is significantly lower than a bare muzzle or using the SME without the shroud attached (i.e. only the brake).
Our subjective conclusion is that you can get away with using the SME without ears on for perhaps a mag in an emergency. But if you shoot it consistently without ears on, you will damage your hearing. The Witt SME is not hearing safe while shooting outdoors by itself. You must have ears on to be safe.

I own several (aka: waaay too many) SME's fitted to various barrel length and caliber rigs.
This probably will surprise nobody but the further the muzzle is from your face, and the less powerful the round, the less punishing the sound is to the shooter. So a 5" AR9 with an SME 'feels' louder than a 11" AR9 or a 16" Sub2000. Then you change rounds and the equation is altered but the general tenet is the same. A 7.5" 7.62x39 is quite a bit more punishing than the 16" rig of the same caliber. There doesn't seem to be a giant noticeable difference between 12" and 16". Lastly I have never tried it on any of my 22LR setups, though that may be interesting to do sometime, especially on a short barrel where there's no chance of a projectile sonic boom.

Yes and with all guns tht shoot past speed of sound u should have ears on even a 22 even suppressed the just cracking the sound berrier hurts the ears only subs will help wich is the most optimum way to use both Suppressor and a sme neither will replace ear protection the sme just requires less paperwork lol

Update to the subjective SME testing below:
During the Thanksgiving holidays, had a chance to return to my buddy's outdoor range to test/play with the Witt SME. This time testing the brake's effect on very rapid fire with my 9mm CMMG AR upper (5" barrel) hosted on a lower containing a f0rce r3s3t trigger (hello there AFT lol). Rounds per minute guesstimate was perhaps around 750.
Overall, the brake works very well without the shroud. Dumping a 30-round mag offhand onto a 10" steel gong (at 15 yards) and keeping on target was almost effortless. There is a small muzzle rise from the stream of bullets that you need to adjust for initially. Guesstimate rise is less than 1/8".
Attaching the shroud lessen the brake's effectiveness by a large factor. Guesstimate muzzle rise is triple the amount without the shroud. Thus, you have to put a bit of effort in to keep on target (10" gong at 15 yards) throughout the mag dump.

Is there much a difference between the two SMEs that you showed in the video?

I'd like to to see several recording decibel meters located at various points around the point of discharge to see what's going on from that perspective.. Seems to me that would really tell the story as well as aid in making design changes if need be, as it's based on hard data?

Sounds like a decent product... However, based on this and other reviews, I attempted to order one of the lightweight .556 versions. Witt Machine may have the worst customer service in the firearm accessory manufacturing sector. I ordered the item on March 11th and never received the SME and not a single response or even one word of reply from them. They charged my credit card immediately, but as of yesterday the order was still 'processing'. Total BS. There are many other similar experiences like mine detailed in many review comment sections. Needless to say I could not reach anyone to cancel my order, so I had no choice but to charge it back with Amex. Do NOT order unless you use a credit card that allows chargebacks. BE WARNED!

Well I don't have a SME, I run a KAK 2inch Slimline ona 7.5inch 300blackout. I just uploaded video at an outdoor range with snow on the ground (snow acts like an insulator for snow by absorbing some sound)

  • @2ndAmendProtector

Why is this not considered a suppressor? Legally speaking, what is actually NOT being met to put it into the suppressor category by the ATF?

    • @2ndAmendProtector
      @2ndAmendProtector ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@TheRealRenn …..I built a real nice all titanium suppressor for my .308. Waiting for my Form 4 to come through I just attach it and use it without the baffles and end cap. It works great just like these products. But mine is 8.5” long so I think it’s even better at throwing the sound down range.

Never shoot without hearing protection... Yeah?? Weird how our range instructors back in the 80s left that out of our training... Later on it was said..How can you expect to hear and identify the other guys firing, range, and direction or what is going down around you if your ears are plugged or covered??...

That was 40 years ago, almost half a century. Back then we also used asbestos insulation and didn't provide workers with personal protective equipment. Back then kids could go get cigarettes for grandma.
Technology and safety have come a long way in 40 years. COMTAC active hearing ear protection will let you hear a squirrel fart 20 yards behind you while you shoot, its time to move past the 80s and into the present.
