Laying 60" Pipe with a CAT 390

  • Big machines in tight places takes a whole lot of skill.
This Sargent job requires a 390 due to hard digging conditions, deep pipe, and heavy structures.
The trees in the photo are considered historic, and the job spans only a two-lane city street. Chainsaws are not allowed.
As I watched the operator move the monster machine around without much issue, Herb Sargent walked up and said, “I’d let him fluff my pillow with that thing.”
He was pretty damn good indeed.

I’ve used a 335 to lay some 60inch concrete storm pipe I can only imagine how much more efficient it is to use this beast of a machine

Really good choices of equipment here, including the trench shield. No micky mousing around. Bravo. Any time you see a crew that can drive sheet piling in straight and quickly, that's a crew that knows what it's doing. Those CAT RT dump trucks are the bomb, right?

My time goes back to the beast 1266 Koehring
On the big 60 inch pipe going out to beach. For outfall sewer, it had a massive bucket. The old Air control's. Swing forward and back on controls. BE made a 500-H that was huge in 80s
Then be sold off all there construction side. The Cat 395 is a monster.

In the 1980s the EPA created laws forcing cities and towns that dump sewage into any body of water to treat the waste. Some communities kept getting delays but most abided to requirements. I live in Lynn MASS and in the 1990s our city started separation. One whole section of the city went through 10yrs of inconvenience. I worked for a large gas utility in MASS and this was my area. I ran the DigSafe program and participated from boring for depths to installation. Every street got a new storm drain line installed plus new sewer lines and water and gas mains do to encroachment. It started with a 12 x 10 square drainline from the beach all the way for 1 1/2 miles. Had a branch off going 90 degree heading to the other side of the section of the city. That new part was close to 3 stories deep at bottom of culvert. They also pushed main underground for a short section ( 500 yards) below house's. These main lines required total excavation of streets. Removal of sewage lines and mains. Water and gas mains Warne secured then replaced after all storm drains and sewer mains were replaced. Sewer mains were not as deep. They had probably 6 different crews doing different parts of the replacement. 1 crew did the big main lines and another crew or crews did the connecting streets. Another crew did the curb man wholes connections to the main drains. Always work on different parts some where. The bad part was I got called when something got broke or hit. I notified dispatch and had to fly over because I was called. Sorry to say these crews gave me lots of bad situations but we never lost a building. Leaks were not my job but when they called I had to respond and usually before technicians arrived. I witnessed every step of the project and considered it a bragging point till I leave this earth

Lynn has there own water supply and treatment center they also built a new sewer treatment plant. The project went from Lynn beach all the way UP eastern ave. At eastern and William ave is where it branched off going down the street probably 200yrds. From that point it was pushed underground till it reached Jackson str and that was 300yrds form the beginning. From there the complete length of Jackson and down Clinton str and banging a left to Chatham str. At intersection they built a big clean out structure. On Chatham it went down to western ave and every street reconnecting was also done. At that structure on Chatham and Oakwood ave it also went down the other direction. Ended up going along Adam street to chestnut street and banging a right. Most of the project blasting was required to get the depth needed

Flushing sewer into waterways was never a "sustainable practice". It was the technology of the day. Separation of combined flows has been a high priority for many years and not a very recent issue. It just takes time to get funding to separate the flows. Some existing infrastructure prohibits the total separation of the flows.
