Pot Black returned to TV with this series after an absence of five years, with presenting duties being done by Eammon Holmes and Ted Lowe and John Spencer on the mikes in the commentary box. In this edition Steve James and Doug Mountjoy are playing for a place in the quarter-finals.

I know Steve James has had his problems but he seems to be enjoying life now, last I heard. He was such a natural, attacking player with every shot in the book, a bit like Joe Johnson. He was capable of beating anyone and should have won far more.

The table is as slow af compared to modern tables.

Yes. They had thicker cloth back then and no table heaters. They wouldn't get so many 100s if they had to play on those old tables today.

Factor in heavy cloths and balls that didn't move like they do now and you'll understand partly why what you say was true.
