I just ordered tomato seeds yesterday for my tiny garden. Mid March can't get here soon enough so I can start them.
Very interesting video. Look forward to following the progress of the crop. Thanks for showing us your process!
That was a lot of great information!! Thanks for taking time to share it all - so interesting! God bless y'all with a successful season! It'll be fun to watch!! 🙏👍♥️
Already that time of year can’t wait for another season of videos we are harvesting down here in Florida
Wow!
And your 2025 growing adventure begins . How wonderful!
Great video. Enjoyed that you walked us through the process.
cool video, makes me want to farm lol, lot of great info thanks for sharing
Great information about your seed set up🇳🇿🌱
Thanks for all the info on rockwool !
Thanx Jason!!!!
Thanks for sharing
As always, very interesting!
Wow lots of great tomato information! Who doesn't love an early tomato? Please follow up so we can see how the plants do.
Very interesting, thanks
I hit Walmart... Hard to find paladin seeds I found some I got okra marigolds tomatoes I got a couple different varieties of tomatoes. All the good stuff I got some romaine lettuce it's just so hard with the wildlife down here. Got my pepper plants going got my tobacco going. Hoping for a better year only got like four pumpkins last year and only got maybe two that actually got finished but I only got probably 20/30 tomatoes tough year. Had to pack some water in order to get some tomatoes I didn't like to pack water but I had to a little bit. I'm going to try to get me a container so I can have some water but it would take a pump to get it out of the creek to get a tote full but I'm going to try to give it a go this year hoping for a better year
We're seeding this monday. Normally we do 1/2 a planting first to get the germination and early green house problems worked out, then a full planting the next week. This is for field transplants in March. I'm going with primo red, bhn871, red snapper and our all time favorite juliet. It's go time.
good varieties....I've never tried juliet. Go time!
Jason, what is the model number of those rock cubes? The reason why I am asking is because when I get them off of Amazon there’s no holes in them or at the very least they are very small and I have to dig them out to make them bigger yours have larger holes in them so that’s the reason why I’m asking. Thanks and keep up the good work. We do appreciate it.
I use Grodan Rockwool model AO36/40, they are 1.5" cubes in a pad of 98. In the Crop King catalog it is ROC1008
@ thank you brother
your Canadian friends have sent you a decent amount of snow from behind Lake Erie, man,Canada is a fridge not worse than Siberia )
terrible!
😊😊😊😊😊
Seeded most of the Summer Spring crops last week. I've learned my lesson on pelleted as well. I found that the coating when heats up. It loosens up then when it gets colfder it gets tighter makes the seed not as viable. I still steer clear from F1 seeds for that reason as well. What are your takes in the F1 seeds?
all my seeds are F1 seeds ( which I just call hybrid seeds) I don't plant any heirloom/open pollinated. I have some friends who are much larger than i and they lost their buts trying to grow a few acres of heirloom tomatoes one year. No disease resistance and way more prone to cracking and splitting, as far as tomatoes go.
G'day Jason 7 in Ohio and 41 cheers in Adelaide stay warm.😮
Very excited for the new growing season. Always makes me feel warmer once I start to seed. Looking forward to the season.
What wattage are your individual lights u r using in your basement. R they the typical 42w led or r thwy a little stronger. I use 42w 4 ft led lights but find I need 2 per 4 trays to get good growth. And I am typically alot closer to the seedling or they decide to stretch right out reaching for the light. 6 lights for 12 flats seems much more efficient.
Thx for the video. Good luck on the season
Thanks Eric, I was told to keep them between 6-12 inches so I just went with about 10-12 and so far they look great. These lights are the made with the proper amounts of white, blue and red spectrum for growing seedlings and cloning, these aren't just run of the mill led grow lights. they have a dual wattage option, 18w or 30w and I run them on 30.
I plant heirlooms so I save seeds each year. My tomatoes I have been growing for 15 years. I save the seeds in the bottom of my refrigerator. The oldest seed are still viable with about 85% germination. I only grow one variety so there is no danger of cross pollination contaminating the germ plasm.
that is pretty awesome and i bet they taste amazing!
One problem with rockwool is that it has a naturally high ph. You are suppose to do your initial soaking of your rockwool cubes with a low ph water to balance them. You can use ph down or vinegar. That’s one reason I prefer Oasis cubes over rockwool.
We do pre-soak them with pH corrected water before seeding on all of our later seedings but with that first one we just use straight water and then once they sprout then we soak them with pH corrected water with fertilizer added. Have never had one issue in over 20 years doing it this way.
mice will just eat through the plastic. Heck they eat everything. I wired a 3 sided shed and wired it with romex for the electrical. They ate the yellow wire coating and built nest with it. I like that "Big Girl Tomatoes" that's funny. You are correct, its the same labor to place a expensive seed as it is a cheap seed into the hole. one question so I can get clarification. You use those greenhouse seeds because they are design for greenhouses or doing hydroponics in a greenhouse and those varieties are design for the fertization through water only? Also have you done a test row of using the greenhouse variety tomato in the field? curious to see the results on how they do. Where do you purchase your Greenhouse seeds at?
yeah we just trap all the mice ahead of time...haven't had a mouse issue in years now that we have a cat. the indeterminate tomatoes from DeRuiter Seeds are bred for greenhouse environment, and I tried some field tomatoes next to them one year and it was a disasterous viny mess. They might do better in the soil but in the dutch bato buckets with perelight they did not do well. in the field the greenhouse tomatoes just sprawled everywhere and got beat up by the elements. Many seed suppliers can get seeds from De Ruiter.
Really enjoy your videos. I have a question for ya. We have a back yard garden. We grow tomatoes every year. I know different varieties have different tastes. My favorite tasting tomato is very tangy or acidic tasting. Ya know the ones that get ya right there behind your jaws. My question is, is there something we can feed them to help ensure or maybe influence this flavor. I use a fertilizer injector, so I can feed them just about what ever I want. Thanks.
man that is a great question that I don't have an answer for, sorry....but I know what you mean, I love an acidic tomato, forget those low acid ones, lol
Can you plant those Geronimo tomatoes outdoors in he field..? Is so,will they produce like other tomato plants, but better..?
I wouldn't advise it. They are bred more for greenhouse environment and they are indeterminate and would sprawl all over out of control. They would get beat up too much by the elements, and do better in a controlled environment.
That's what I got early girl and beefsteak I got some other ones too but I remember those names on tomatoes. Any suggestions on a good high yield on tomato plants everyday small garden type of thing. Not a commercial producer but I really only got like 20 30 tomatoes if that last year.
add some Determinant plants to go along with the indeterminate.
What is the proportion ratio of the bellow pump you use for the hydroponic fertilizer.
Fascinating!
А вы теплицу хлорным раствором перед сезоном моете (опрыскиваете, обрабатываете, не знаю как написать чтоб правильно перевело) чтоб продезинфицировать от грибков, вирусов, бактерий?
we have in the past but I have not for the past 5-6 years. But it is good practice to do it.
From Ohio here, Did things start heating up with the snow melting quite a bit over where you are as it did near me yesterday?
@Brandon-nt4wy yes it did, it was nice to see the sun for a change. Moving tomato seedlings to the greenhouse today!
If the tariffs come tomorrow, be interesting to see how your operation is affected.
I can't really think of how it would affect me unless it affects fertilizer cost this spring...we will see.
Trump caved, you're good. it was all a bunch of BS.
With the zone your in, if you start seeds today, 6-8 weeks you will still be in frost mode no?
Yes, with starting seeds on January 15, we are still in frost zone until four months later that’s why we grow in greenhouses for our early tomatoes.
Can you make a variety recommendation for a first time outside field grower. I have grown Pumpkins in the past and letting that go but need a supplemental small income crop. I want to grow on roughly one acre. I would like to stick with 2 medium to large slicing varieties.
Stm2255
yes, stm2255. We also like Roadster, Rambler, Skyway 687 and Red Snapper. Also trialing some Windup and Maverick this year.
Try Sun Gold tomatoes.
I have....we can't hardly give cherry tomatoes away that's why we grow grape tomatoes. And they are indeterminate and just turned into a huge viny mess...we like determinates
I never had the balls to go all in and learn how to grow hydroponic tomatoes. I'm in South Carolina anyways, so I'm pretty sure it's just too hot here to even make it work without a very hefty air conditioning bill. Did you take a class or something? How did you come to grow hydroponic tomatoes?
I live in NC and we have several tomato houses here. They start in August and grow through until June then clean out and start over.
Mississippi is a huge greenhouse tomato growing state and I'm sure it gets as hot there as it does in SC, just a different season and market there compared to me.
How many pounds you average with that many tomatoe plants
if we pull them out in mid August we only get about 15lb per plant but we've gotten up to 22 lbs per plant by keeping them going until Oct.
Did they make it in time with Jake*s house,I mean, does it have a roof at least ? Or maybe he's already living there?
his house is wrapped and windows are in and he is putting OSB on the roof now. He had a long wait on his trusses to come in. I will try to film it some when i go film more of Joels sugar shack
Seeds do have a cost, but so do plants when you get them to plant in the ground. This is the most cost savings to make your own seedlings! :)
agreed
Onions I got evergreen bunching 60 days container variety I got Marigold champion container variety 45 days I got Marigold cracker jacker mixed colors 45 days I got tomato Cherry large fruited 70 days I got tomato Big boy hybrid 70 days tomato Early girl hybrids 52 days container variety I got tomato beefsteak 70 Days. I got Kentucky Wonder pole bean green 66 days I got pumpkin jack o'lantern again this year they're 100 days. I got okra 58 days I got carrots container variety 70 days cauliflower early snowball 60 days container variety pumpkin mini harvest blend 90 days time 80 Days container variety. I got cilantro 70 days container variety watermelon ultra-cool hybrid 78 days basil suite 85 days container variety. I got lettuce romaine 68 days container variety. Then I've got atomic pepper seeds probably 30 or 40 varieties and then I've got a whole flat of tobacco plants Kentucky Burley I think they're barely needs like 90 or 100 days to do it but you know you got to start those in February both of those
Surprised you don't have a vacuum seeding plate. Time is money. Mice are a menace for young plants for sure. $2500 is a bit pricey. But if you don't spend money, you can't make money.
We made one that we've used in the past for our 72 and 50 count pro trays but don't have one for the 98 count rockwool slabs....it only takes an hour to seed them. Takes a lot of money to farm these days...$17,000 just for seed for a 65 acre veggie farm.
Have fun picking yourself and selling to Walmart
I don't pick them myself and I've never sold anything to Walmart
@@wishwellfarmsmy apologies, please forgive my ignorance. I don’t know you, or your business. I rushed to judgment on something I had no knowledge of.
Again I apologize.

slow and steady
@wishwellfarms they say slow and steady wins the race
Why not save your own seeds from your favorite tomatoes to get a jump start? So, if the seeds are not available, you can at least sow your saved seed.
You can't save hybrids, first it is illegal and secondly they will revert back to one of their parents and won't be the same tomato
@wishwellfarms oh, ok
