  • In this new series, I will be researching the family trees of fellow youtubers and showing the process as I go along. This series will be a tutorial on how to do genealogy research while also highlighting the interesting ancestral history of your favorite youtubers. This first season will feature Sam Aronow, whose channel focuses on Jewish history in the context of World history.
    This first episode will focus on his great-grandfather Jacob Aronow.

    Thanks for the tip on using JewishGen's townfinder, I just found thebtown my grwatgradfather came from. It is Osevijai in Belarus. He called it oshve and said it was somewhere in the countryside near Riga, I had always assumed Latvia but I found it on the Belarus side of the modern border with Latvia. So interesting

    Awesome start to the series! Always had the idea to start a "finding your roots" style youtube series, you beat us to the punch lol. A great start, awesome how you take people through all of the steps in researching and really make it informative.

    27:33 “Chernigov Oblast;” Starodub was administratively part of Ukraine at the time, rather than Russia Proper.

      I believe that it wasn't until 1918, after World War I, that it became part of Ukraine. Before that it was part of the Russian Empire. These days it is in Russia, which is actually not that common in my experience, as many places which were in the Pale are now in countries outside of Russia.

    • @SamAronow
      @SamAronow 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@GeneaVlogger Almost all of it in fact. Prior to the Partitions of Poland in 1772-97, no Jews lived in the Russian Empire, so the Pale was established using Poland's old borders, plus territories conquered from the Ottomans. But what I meant to convey was that Starodub and Mglin were part of Chernigov Oblast during the imperial era, and Chernigov Oblast today is part of Ukraine, just without those bits included.

      @GeneaVlogger Are you going to expand his family tree by adding ancestors?

    • @GeneaVlogger
      @GeneaVlogger  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @The Mac & Cheese Orca - Yes, the goal is to eventually expand the family tree. Whether or not I am able to accomplish that is yet to be seen. Part of the fun of this series, it is just like regular research projects where we never know when we will hit a serious brick-wall.

      I have messaged sooo many youtubers about doing something like this, big and small; Mr. Beast, Mark Rober, Yes Theory, NoLifeShaq, Graham Stephen, Davie504, LeonHart, Slew, Geography King, Harry Mack, The Try Guys, and so many more. I was aiming for channels that were about as big as I am, or bigger, and then when I 'met' Sam (through a comment on the Bahador Alast channel actually) and watched his videos, I thought he would be perfect as a guest!

      @@GeneaVlogger I think Barbs from Geography Now would be down for something like this. I remember a few years ago, he went on a trip to various countries in Europe, mainly going to places where his ancestors were from. So he must have at least some interest in genealogy!

      Another thing with the dates of birth, Russia adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1918, that might well be the cause of the discrepancy.

    I’m super into Geneaology and have tried studying my family’s history but haven’t quite gotten the proficient techniques and tools atm. I always wanted to watch a series on someone doing ACTUAL family research whether it be there own or someone else’s so i can learn how to go about my own research the best way .. and also i’m just as interested in other peoples family’s as i am with mine i don’t know why 😂

    Boah! Genea Vlogger! Gentle, Dangerously dramatic, detective work! Love it! I hope to find some details about my ancestors to see if the older children coming over on a ship with their real mother, just took on the last name of their new 2nd father in the shuffle, without an adoption . 😐🙏 Ancestors can run but they can't hide. 😁❤️

    Could the discrepancy with the birth dates be because of the Russian Old-Style dates? There's about a two-week difference between the birth dates which would fit.

    • @GeneaVlogger
      @GeneaVlogger  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes! It is also possible that they knew it by the Hebrew date and were trying to convert it to Gregorian, so it changed. There is also the possibility that they didn't really know the birthdate in the first place and just went with something.

    Remember that at some point we had two different calenders. And there was nearly a month difference. Also some people lied about their ages when they wanted to join the military and were too young.

    I have been making my tree, but I am increasingly frustrated trying to find records and information for my polish, czech and hugarian ancestors that immigrated to New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I only can get back to the late 1800s and then its a dead-end. Many have "unknown" listed for parents on their records or no records found at all. I've been thinking maybe the surnames were changed too significantly to find. Any tips for finding information from eastern Europe?
