This guy makes it look so easy. It took me 30 minutes to pry those damn clips off to remove the old ones. I was cussing so much my neighbors ran back in their house and watched me struggle from the window. Swearing helps when you're performing a difficult task. LOL. My advice, remove the tops first so you can move the struts around and get a better angle on those pesky little clips. There's no space to work on a Beemer where they attach to the ball joint at the bottom. Because my new ones haven't been delivered yet, I also used a couple of short 2X4s to brace my hood open. Thanx for the vid, 50skid.
Nice video as always kid. I need you to go ahead and get your channel an e88 one series convertible so I can watch you repair anything that might come up with my recent acquisition lol. But really man you have saved me so much money with the daughters E46 and given me all the confidence and knowledge for tackling all the jobs I’m currently working on in the e88 valve cover gasket, ess, ofhu gasket, spark plugs etc. so thank you so much man I’m glad to see some sponsors hooking you up, we appreciate your detailed videos and methods!!
So I tried this and one side of the clip came out of the slot and I can’t get it back in how do I get it to slide up instead of just getting one side to slide out? Pretty sure I broke all 4 of them…
No need to be sorry man! We all get busy, just don't give up and never give in. We all love your videos, they are always super informative and also funny! Seriously it makes my day when we get a new video on this engine!
I'd like to replace my E46 (convertible) trunk struts to get the trunk to "pop" up when released. Is this how the trunk behaved when new? I've tried cheap ones and didn't get the pop, but I haven't tried OEM yet.
No they don't automatically pop up. You could just buy some springs though that slide over the struts and compress when you shut the trunk. That way they are holding some potential energy and when you release the hood they'll be sufficient to force it open and up.
So, I'm about to swap the engine in my 2003 530i e60 m54b30 with a 2003 330xi e46 m54b30. (530i brake booster compartment filled with rain water and the wife threw a rod by incessantly cranking it in the driveway) I too am working in a 1 car garage, so do you recommend removing the front of the car or just wiggling it out/in from above? The new (to me) engine has 125k miles on it and it came from a rear ended 330xi. Any thoughts or tips before I begin? Best regards, Paul
I have trunk struts on my 2004 E60 525i that i cannot find anywhere. the part has been replaced, the part number is 51244333609. If you google it and click "images" you'll see a funky looking trunk strut that I can't get anywhere. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. My trunk flings open like a catapult.
Thanks the damn hood on the m3 slammed on my neck while I was trying to unfasten the valve cover for a vanos job. Also the clips for the kidney grill snapped off. This would’ve been worst if the valve cover was off and everything is apart phew
Thank you for your videos . l´ learning a lot from them. l´m mounting a BMW 325i . Engine could you send me the book the engine mounting with your grips.Ok. thank you very much.
nice one. at the weekend i will have to fix the secondary airpump (sounds like a jet) maybe i make a video and send it to you? so you can use it for your channel. be prepared for a very detailed, minmal tools and things needed ;) yes you can fix them very cheap
I bought my e46 M3, and the very first time I worked on the car, the hood slammed down and fucking grenaded both kidney grills out of the front of the car. I was also charging the battery, and the fucking power arc'd into the hood, and burned a fucking hole in my hood.... REPLACE THESE... DONT FUCK AROUND.... /sigh
Same hit my head kidney grill flying. Just bout the struts abs new matte kidney grills. First ti I felt like kicking my car but then I looked at her and I was like. Ordering these struts ! Got a new oem 6speed illuminated shifter 😎 it was way overdue
Great video, thank much for posting. Took five minutes to replace both struts. One thing I did that worked well was to use a straight pick tool rather than a screwdriver to pop back the clip on the strut being replaced- the pick tool worked better for me in getting "under" the old clip to pop it back. I kinda think the 50s kid just gets his kicks replacing things even if their not broken. Its a compliment dont worry. Im the same!
This is the easiest DIY project on a Bimmer ever! Thank Jason!
Always love saving money with great videos like this showing how to DIY. Thanks!
50s kid? You look a lil young for that bro, lmao. Cuz people from the 50s are now 61-70. You seem like a 70s kid. Straight up💯
Affordable repairs I’d say. Did this a couple months ago for my trunk as well. Thanks.
Please, please, please, do a video on opening a stuck e46 hood. Whether it's a busted cable or however. It would be so helpful.
