    Thank you so much! I've been working on my 81' El Camino and somehow managed to break one of the stock brass tubes on the heater core. I bought the part today and I was laying in bed tonight and came across this video; I jumped out of bed, got my shoes on and went and replaced the heater core and just now (12:45am) got back to bed without the dread of having to change it tomorrow. Thanks a million!

    Thank you for this. I started to experience water on my floors after rains. Friends who own Gbody's told me I need to clean that drain by the blower motor right away because its clogged and letting rain water enter my cab through the floor vents which will eventually rot out my floor. I have been trying to figure out how the hell I have been getting water in my car for months now. This video helped me see exactly where I need to get my hand in to clean that flapper valve. Thank you so much brother.

    Excellent tutorial Brian! It has just helped me get to my heater core and evaporator.
    Couple of things I would add - on my 1986 Monte Carlo SS, there's two more small screws holding the top half of the airbox lower down in the center of the top half, as well as all those around the circumference. Also, after removing the scuttle trim panel, I also had to remove the two brackets on the passenger side to make enough room for the top half of the airbox to clear when removing it upwards.
    Lastly, @9.15 when fitting the evaporator, there is this black goop that is being used to seal the inlet. What is this black goop and where can I get it from?

    A couple of questions: Is your cover broken and if so, did you reinstall as is? It looks like there are pieces missing. (You can see this at 11:20 in the video.) Second, did you remove all the old butyl sealant before laying down the new? I have a leak into the passenger side footwell of my 1983 Caprice whenever it rains or I wash the car, and I think this seal is where it is coming from.

    • @ClassicGBodyGarage
      @ClassicGBodyGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      This was a while ago and do recall the cover being broken as someone was in there prior. I left is as is and added more butyl in those places to seal off any cracks etc. Yes I clean off the old sealant. Many times the actual heater box is leaking where it seals to the firewall but can come from other places. Door hinge bolts, the rubber boot for the power options, windshield. Just need to hunt it down. Its not easy.

    Great video. My heater core just started leaking on my 87 cutlass supreme. I noticed my passenger carpet became damp. Would old coolant beneath the carpet causes any long term issues to carpet or surrounding areas? Why would it leak beneath the carpet instead of just leaking beneath engine bay?

    I have a coolant leak that's dripping down behind the front passenger tire. This is on my 83 Cutlass. Do you think that's indicative of a bad heater core? Someone mentioned to me, to bypass the heater core. See if the leak stops, and that would tell me it's bad.....

    • @ClassicGBodyGarage

    Unfortunately my cover broke into many pieces. Do you have any ideas on where I can get an OEM or aftermarket replacement?
    I would think an aftermarket parts manufacturer would have seen the value in producing a 2-piece cover so the piece caulked to the firewall wouldn't need to be removed.

    Great information. I have one question. I noticed in top of the heater coil that a ground wire (green) was there. Where is it grounded too. Seconded I took my box out 3 months ago to clean, new evap, and heater core. I sealed it up yesterday but I know I didn’t place that ground back on there. Is it another location to ground the system (box)? Need a response please.
    Thanks,

      Ground wire goes from the heater core bracket to the firewall. The ground wire must be on the heater core somehow.

    3M Strip Calk works well for this too. It's a smaller diameter. The butyl tape can be kinda thick to compress at times.

    Is it common for the hvac box seal that is inside cab to leak? Is there away to re seal without removing entire box

      @ClassicGBodyGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it is common and you can use RTV if you want but still not the proper fix.

    Whats the best aftermarket brand heater core to get for a 87 cutlass supreme? I see autozone and oriley have them but Im not sure on how long they will last

      Buy the top quality through RockAuto

      D'ANGELO the problem I had with O'Reilly's and AutoZone heater cores in my 78 Regals were the heater core was a 3/8 of an inch to tall and my top cover couldn't bolt back down tight because of it. I had to put the original back in. I was going to change it too since I was replacing everything dealing with the a/c with brand new parts. I'm going with RockAuto if mine starts to leak. Really I have no choice because of the height issue with the other parts houses heater cores.

    How do I put the new open Air cleaner on With out it running like shit.. Running hard.. I got two. Nice ones.. Eldebrock chrome and a nice like flat black one that say chevy in red with the bow tie as the nut.. Help brother please.. Thanks sorry for the big ass comments lol..

    • @ClassicGBodyGarage
      @ClassicGBodyGarage  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Viarella You just need to plug off the unused lines that go from your current air cleaner to the carb etc so you don't cause any vacuum leaks when you unhook it all.

    Would you be able to do a video on troubleshooting the vacuum system that controls the vent doors for the AC/heat system? I have a 1984 El Camino and the air will only blow out at the floor. I believe I may be missing a vacuum reservoir under the hood that the plastic lines should be hooked to. However, I'm not exactly sure how the vacuum lines should be hooked up.

    Hi,, just found ya'lls vids and fb too.. Just bought an 88 olds cutlass supreme classic brougham last week from Ohio. One owner only 17,000 miles. Just arrived yesterday, took it out for a little 5 mile drive and parked it in (heated) garage and looked underneath car 2 hrs later and have a nice 1/2 a cup of anti-freeze on the floor.... its dripping from near the right front wheel near where the cat converter attaches up to engine... Ive ruled out leaky fill jug,, ruled out radiator, ruled out visual hoses not leaking,,, so my question is heater core? I put the heater on in idle got it to temp and had windows up, the windows fogged up and did smell a smig like anti freeze inside,, faint smell,,, wouldnt it be leaking in the floorboard on the passenger side??? which its not..... thanks for any help,, df.

      Not all heater cores leak inside the car. All signs point to a bad core.

    I recently bought an 85 Olds Toronado as my first car earlier in February. I have a battery drain issue. I've done many checks from the alternator to fuses to all the electrical appliances on the dash. Haven't found a single thing that could be the cause. I could use some help. Also I'm trying to remove my heater core without having to ripping off the entire dash. Any tips?
