    When using Esbit tabs, don't burn them in succession, it will not shorten the boil time very much. Burn them simultaneously (2-3 at a time), the flame will be hotter and the water will boil faster.
    TIP: you can increase the efficiency of the classic Esbit burner significantly if you add a few twigs on top of your solid fuel tabs.

    I use a wind screen and a Kojin alcohol stove and I get consistent boil times for 2 cups of water at about 8-9 minutes. I love the Kojin stove, it prevents spillage and flame if it gets bumped. No alteration of the Esbit is necessary, I put the Kojin right on the tray with no issues.

    They apparently do make a particular stove selling on Amazon called a 5-piece stove. This includes a brass alcohol burner.

    I use mine often. Great stove.17 min to boil water is not a big deal. I'm hiking, not in a hurry. This system allows for a lot less weight and trash to pack out compared to canisters.

    I like that little stove combo. I think it would be decent for day hikes, where you’re just heating water up once for lunch or a snack.
    You’ve got some really beautiful scenery out there!

    Esbit actually makes a system very much like this one but it's also designed specifically to use the alcohol stove. I love mine for two reasons. First alcohol. Second the main cup/pot that comes with that is over 900 mL and you can fit not only there stove inside the pod but if you do want to use isobutane you can also nest in 8 oz MSR canister and the MSR Pocket rocket 2 inside the pot. The lid is a 400 mL+ cup/pan as well.

      I have the 5 piece Esbit cookset, that you're referring to. I also have the 3 piece he's demonstrating in the video. I'm not too keen on fuel cubes. I use an Esbit or Trangia stove, with this little system, as well. Works like a charm.

      I have the esbit stove you mentioned. I can carry a lighter, multiple sheets of aluminum foil, a dish towel, the alcohol stove, salt and pepper shakers ( Coleman). I vacuumed sealed oil and carry 3 single use oil, in the bag given I put a 3oz alcohol container in it. Love my little set up. Takes up hardly any space.

      I did exactly this! It doesn’t make a mess on the bottom of the pot and it gives me cup of boiling water in about 5 minutes. I use this little set up for hot drinks, noodle meals and heating through cans of food. It can do e.g. boiled potatoes and veg first then a can of stewed meat - a proper hot meal on a plate in about 12 - 15 min. Superb!

    Wow, I saw your video and ordered one. Received it today and it really beats the old collapsable Esbit stove. I like it and the price is so reasonable. I'll be using it on the CDT. Thanks for sharing this video and the review. If one makes a aluminum windbreak using a couple pop cans it heats up water very fast. I use this with the solid fuel Esbit tabs. Really great product. Thanks again.

    Always enjoy these stove set reviews. I like the folding stove with tablets as an emergency back-up. I have one in my get home bag and another in my bug out bag. For regular use, I prefer the wood-burning stoves like the Emberlit Fireant and Firebox Nano. Would be very interested in seeing you review those, since you seemed to like the Solo Stove.

    It's a pretty nice setup ... if you don't use the esbit tabs. Use a small alcohol stove like the Choke Hazard Turbo stove from Tinnytrash on itsy. Just need to remove the esbit tray on the bottom. I also modified it so I could use the MBDC Gnome Turbo if you need a longer burn. Other low alcohol stoves will work fine too, and you need a windscreen!

    i have one of these cooksets that i bought using my rei dividend and i really don't consider it to be a real cookset. it can't boil water in a reasonable amount of time, the pot is too small to really cook anything in, but it does have a really nice lid and is really well-made. after lots of trial and mostly error, the only thing i use it for now is melting butter for popcorn while car-camping using a tea light candle, it works really well for that.

    Aw, where’s your soul?! 😁 the little Esbit cookset is perfect for overnighter, weekend trips for hot drinks, soups, noodle and the like. I love mine because there’s nothing to go wrong and it can take being dropped and sat on and stuff. One cup of water for a hot drink is 5 mins, I can live with that! 👍🏻🤗

    I didn't time it, but I tried pouring the water from the included cup into a 6" diameter camping pot and it went much faster and I got it to boil with less than 1 tablet in an admittedly completely calm environment. There are considerable heat losses off to the side and I guess the larger pot captures it better. How safe that is the individual will have to decide for themselves.

    Thank you so much for your great review, I was literally about to click the buy button on this set and the alcohol stove! I have a four dog titanium multifuel stove that I have been switching between my hiking bag and my " I want to walk home from work bag" (4.5 hours), it worked fine until I went hiking and realized that my stove was in the other bag and that was not fun considering that we have an open fire ban during summer. I love hiking and sometimes taking the backwoods trail home, but I am looking for a small compact stove that runs on esbit and alcohol for my scenic route home :-) If anyone has any suggestions I am all ears and thankful for you taking your time to give me a tip.

    Good Review. Will work for me in NM when I'm on the CDT. Just boiling water anyway. I have one of the old Esbit stoves that you fold up. Never appealed to me although I used it successfully on a section hike on AT in GA once. I like that in total (pot and "stove" weigh in at 7 oz. Pretty good. So I ordered me one and appreciate the review. Once I get to CO I think I'll have to switch to my Pocket Rocket as I will need a stove with an "off" switch. I happen to have about 30 Esbit tabs here and so was thinking to use them. I found another video where a fellow talked about using wax infused wood fire starters one can purchase at Dollar General type stores. He claimed they worked better than the Esbit tabs. ha! I might try them also just for fun and giggles. Anyway, I kind of like the idea of this stove and so north of CO if it is ok I might use it there also. Last time I was on the CDT I section hiked NM and into CO to one of the first towns you can jump off at. I used my Pocket Rocket. That and my titanium pot actually weight more than this setup! Thanks again. -White Mexican

  • @alanwilliams5836

    The stove on the larger 5 piece kit is better designed for the Esbit Trangia-style alcohol stove. In fact, it comes with one. I had two of these smaller kits (a little older than these... looks like they changed a couple of things... rubber on the lid D-Ring, and a lid holder on the bottom of it). I have never ever ever gotten this stove to boil 2 cups of water with just one esbit cube (even with an additional windscreen around it). I drilled the tray out of one of the potstands and tried a trangia stove inside.... no luck. I threw the potstands away. I kept the pots and they are what we use in our emergency bags. Inside, we store a fancee feest style alcohol stove, 2 oz of alcohol, a small scrubbie, and a cut down windscreen. Before placing the pot into it's mesh stuff sack, we put a sea-to-summit collapsible cup in the bottom of the sack. Makes a good little emergency kit.

    Seems to me that a basic DIY cat can stove or Fancee Feest with the inner can cut to the same level as the outer should fit just fine. OTOH, hate the Esbit smell, wonder how a trioxane (sp?) tab would do in there?

    I've been able to regularly boil water @ about sea level in 8 minutes (16 oz.), but I always use a windscreen. With its solid fuel & small size & high BTU output the Esbit stove has always seemed a really efficient stove to me. But, you've GOTTA use a windscreen. That's not too hard to remember is it?

    • @jordandavis2131
      @jordandavis2131 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you say windscreen, do you mean a screen to cover up the sides of the stove to trap the heat? Or just a general wind blocker/shelter to stop wind from getting to the whole thing?

    Is it set up for wood burning

  • @rolandstockham1905
    @rolandstockham1905 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Using with a Tragia burner? I had the same idea and did some experiments. I will never use solid fuel tablets because I want to be able to use it in a snow cave or shelter and the fumes from solid fuel tab are horrible. So I simply pulled the little tray out with a pair of pliers. This made it just about work but not efficiently as the pot is still to close to the burner or not enough air, not sure which. Next mod was to take 2 super light alloy tent pegs and place the across the top of the stove to form a pan holder. If you use traditional tent pegs the hook at the top of the peg hooks into the air holes at the top of the stove so they don't roll. Bingo now boils 2 cups of water in under 5 min, it is almost impossible to blow out and only use about 1-1.5oz of fuel. This will now be my emergency stove when the forcast is -15c or above mainly because it pack really small, fits in a corner of my sack and the cup doubles as a drinking cup for my flask. If it is below -15c I will still carry the pressure liquid fuel stove (Primus Omni fuel) because at that temp I want to be able to use the stove to heat a snow cave and it becomes more efficient to use white gas, would just burn too much alcohol. Northern BC coastal range and temps at night in the mountains can be -25 to -30c. Give it a try?

  • @kurtbaier6122

    Put small 4 binder clips on stove to lift cup so flames go up the sides of the cup. Otherwise the flames will only touch the bottom and the slots will actually cause the flames away from the pot. One f tab will get it to a pre boil small bubbles in the Virginia p

    I have the ultralight Esbit titanium stove and the regular folding one. Honestly never been a big fan of either. Having to use more than one large tablet to get a rolling boil is a big fail. And the fuel is proprietary and can only be found in like, a single outdoor store near me. Not good. A Trangia Mini is a much better choice and the fuel can be found anywhere. And if you run out of fuel, just make a small fire and use the pot on that.

    Hi,
    Thanks for doing this review. Looks like this Cookset has the same problem as all the others.
    After 3 thru hikes using different stoves/pots and fuels I have some insights to share with you and your viewer's. I did a demo of it on my channel 2 days ago.
    The problem with all these systems weither butane, alcohol or solid fuel is that the heat is not focused. The slightest breeze reroutes the heat away from the bottom of the pot/cup. I wish someone would make a stove that resolved this.
    This year I thru hiked the Arizona trail using the Esbit tri-wing stove with a 1.6 cup titanium cup and windscreen. I used 1/2 fuel cube to bring my water to scalding temp. 1 cube would easily bring 2 cups to a boil.
    Regards to to smell. I found it not to be noticable while tent camping. If your in an enclosed area, like a shelter, you will notice it. But your not supposed to have open flames in those anyways. So as a trail maintainer who has seen many shelters and tables with burn rings from alcohol fires please use those outside the shelter.
    Their are lots of choices but I find it reliable, light, produces little waste, and shipping in my mail drops has not been a problem.

    Fuel tabs are awful! They stink SOOOOO bad. Your gear will stink, even through the unopened packaging. They leave a heinous residue on the bottom of any pot you use with them( I had to use my belt sander to remove it from my stainless cup), and I don't want that nasty fuel tray inside my cup where I heat consumables. That thing is a no go for me , Thanks Aaron

      I was able to slightly modify the folding Esbit to use a " Fancy Feast " tin, filled with alcohol. Agreed that the fuel tabs are relatively useless, and smell like dirty socks... try the " Fancy Feast " modification, I suspect that you might find it very effective ... Cheers

      @@Ctsoxceltsfan34 I saw a reply where the writer said that if you took one tab, cut it in half and lit both half this would also greatly reduce boil times.

    This seems like it would be a really good system to just use the stove with wood instead of fuel pods, id like to see how that would work out

    • @DeeMoback
      @DeeMoback 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      works out fine..... but you can also just use 3 rocks..... put your cube down, put pot on top of 3 rocks.... jus'sayin'...... or 2 green sticks.....cubes can be handy.....use a piece to get a fire going in damp conditions.... or whatever.... think......

      Ryan ridder, I was thinking the exact same thing, screw the cubes and just use wood. If they wood in the area is too wet, use the cube to dry/ignite the wood and boom you're cooking

    UGH! Aaron...why are you worried about how fast the water boils??? You're in the woods, slow down.
    Besides...a small windscreen and I can get 2 cups boiling in 5-7 minutes

    The reason it doesn't accept the alcohol burner is that Esbit prefers you buy their system that uses both solid and alcohol fuel.
    The cost is nearly double that of this stove.
    You could custom make an alcohol burner that would fit the stove.

    Ive never used anything like that before. I'm just in the beginning stages of planning a bug out bag. I dont have money, so all I can do is plan and research. But, it seems to me that the tray can be drilled out like he said. Get rid of the tray and just use tree branches. You can get bigger flames and more heat. Again, This is my UN-EXPERIANCED opinion. Plus, drilling the tray out would leave a hole in the bottom which would feed oxygen to the fire, so that's a plus. In a emergency/bug out situation, most people probably wouldn't carry alcohol containers because it's more weight, it's one more thing to carry, the fuel is limited and it would take up more space. So, again, branches would be a better option. Controled flame and virtually unlimited fuel supply. I do like the way the cup sits inside the stove as opposed to on top. Just my two cents.

    Eh. It's a really nice compact set. And I like how it nests. But, with the capacity of the pot / cup, I wouldn't see myself using it for anything other than water. For coffee, tea, or maybe bouillon. I'd rather use the canteen system with the nesting cup and stove.

    • @everydayden5826
      @everydayden5826 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Water at 29.92 ( sea level ) boils at 212 F at 5280 ( 24.63 ) ft it boils at 202.45 F At 8000 ft the boiling point is 197.39 If you are looking at absolute time to boiling, altitude certainly makes a difference. I don't believe the pp of o2 at 5300 ft would significantly change the rate of burn of the tablet though, but maybe. Maybe I am missing your point.
