The most talented artists often get labelled "lazy" because they tend to focus on refining what they're already good at. Once those high performers leave the comfort zone and explore new processes and subjects that's when the exciting stuff happens! We think the print came out great BTW. Transferring a drawing to a speedy cut block or linoleum can sometimes go better if you transfer a software-reversed, toner-based print face down using a clear blender marker on the back as a solvent. (Test your block first to make sure the marker doesn't dissolve it.) Since you've got some ink, maybe try monoprint too- all it takes is a strong glass plate and a spoon for a burnisher!

note from a printmaker: if you want to sign your prints **profesionally** you have to sign it using pencil right under the artwork area with small letters and divide three sections equally starting from the left
    1.Title
    2. technique & number of the print f.o. 1/10 means this was your first print of series of 10 done
    3. year & signature
also people dont do hand colored paper because it usually gives paper some kind of texture which in case of linocut/blockcut(?) is not exactly desired and not considered professional. People often just do other linocut which is used as a colored background, you can buy all sorts of printing paints and mix them on your glass board and then put it on the linocut, it makes the artwork really stand out and it is an easy way to make gradients if you like :)

as somebody doing printmaking in uni, using komatex for your blocks is a really good option because it's light, easy to cut/carve and fairly easy to find. most hardware stores sell it as pvc foam sheets, it'll look similar to foamboard but they're denser and lean more to plastic than paper. the speedball tools are good for beginning but move toward tools made more for woodcarving, if you're in canada 'lee valley' has kits of japanese steel carving tools for $60 ish and they're very nice! printmaking paper should be thicker, we tend to use cotton rag rather than pulp based papers because they can handle lots of ink and layers. printmaking is really complicated but so fun and satisfying when you complete a project. hope this helps!!

I usually flip the block and put it on top of the paper when I’m printing by hand :) it helps the paper not wrinkle or move around, in my experience

ohhh i love making lino prints!! though i usually use real lino, i always get kind of annoyed with the rubbery stuff like easycut bc they are so soft you kind of end up tugging the rubber alone as you carve which causes the carving to be not as precise as i like them to be. (you can see what i mean in the video) i also love to use the left over ink on the glass to make monoprints by laying a piece of paper on it and drawing on the back of the paper, you can get some really fun images that way. you should also look into gelli plate printing! also a lot of fun!!!
tips for others who want to try this:
-sharp tools are essential! why was it such a disaster at school? school didnt keep the tools sharp you end up putting more pressure into carving it which causes accidents, if the tools are sharps you dont need as much pressure so its much easier (and keep hands away from the direction you are carving into) i cant speak for the quality of speedball tools, i can say that abig cutters are decent. and i would really recommend against esdee cutters, they are as sharp as a spoon.
    - if you are gonna use real lino, make sure its fresh, if you can move the plate around, bend it a bit, its fresh, if its stiff and hard its old and might not be good enough anymore, you might try warming it up to get it soft again, but there is a point where the lino is just to old and than it is quite hard to cut into.
-thin paper is easier to print on bc you need less pressure. if you have a fancy printing press its less of an issue, but man, ive hurt my shoulder quite a bit by printing on thicker paper with a spoon oof.

I usually carve much smaller pieces to use as stamps, so I use them on top of all sorts of media. I just use waterproof, archival stamp pads. I did do a large Lino cut piece of my cockatiel that I use ink and a brayer for. I’ve also used fluid acrylics and acrylic inks instead of printing ink. You have to work a bit quicker because they dry super fast, but it’s a fun way to experiment with different colors.

so cool to see you do linoleum cuts!! the orange and green gouache background you explored makes the print pop even more and add so much more dimension to the tiger! just make sure your brayer(roller) is laid roller up so you don't get any dents in the roller, so you can continue to make these beautiful prints!! wishing you the best as you continue to explore this medium, al~

I've done the linocut prints over watercolor! It is such a fun and unique technique. Yours turned out great and makes the tiger look like they are sleeping in grass :)

Absolutely love how the prints came out! I found from my own experience that using another roller instead of a spoon, is much easier and good for more paint to go on the paper! However, you don't have to do this, but just thought it could help in the future!

i also burnish with another roller!! it helps the pressure be more even and i feel like i dont forget to burnish some parts bc its usually burnishing bigger areas at a time

This was fun to watch! You're starting off great! I use tracing paper to transfer my designs from paper to rubber/linoleum. I'll draw my design in my sketchbook, trace over it, then put the traced side on my carving material, and trace over the back. I'll refine any lines with pencil. Does that make sense? The tracing paper helps me to make sure the end cut is facing the direction I want. Keep it up! It's a relaxing process and it's always fun to see the finished result printed on paper.

I’ve been really wanting to try out lino recently, I feel like I’ve seen it everywhere! I did it before in school but I never realised that you can use different colours and designs and pop them together… and now I desperately want to try it 😍 would be really cool actually if you got several other pieces of lino and added a background/foreground in different colours as a part 2 to this 😏

This is ridiculously creative and awesome!!! I immediately made a note in my sketchbook to try this out. Your results are stunning. Beautiful work ma'am!!! Also, tip for carving: Draw on the block with ink, and then choose another color that the lines will show through and cover the whole block. That way, when you carve, you see exactly where you've been and what needs to be done as the light pink will stand out :)

On Blick they have a big flat surface u can push the stamp to the paper easier. You can also let the ink dry and then use paint on top and around the print. Just another idea if you want something a little more clean look. I really enjoyed watching this. I love print making.

Love how these prints turned out! Why not do it in reverse, as in have the paper down, then align the carving on top and use a roller to roll it on? I think that’s the way most people do it, then you can better align on the paper.

These came out really good for a first print! I was just doing lino in my art class, and I put my whole fucking everything into it bc it was so fun. One thing I would recommend is get another brair to replace the spoon. Honestly a game changer and makes it so much easier to make sure everything is printed.

aww i started this vid for something to watch while i print :D excited to see what u make with printing in the future!! i love this medium so much, its very accessible. there's a lot of different ways to print, a lot that dont require anything other than ink and a brayer

the curving process looked so satisfying. i took a printmaking class once and i really hated curving at the time as i was using a near blunt tool and some sort of a board which had pretty hard texture. but we had a giant device for printing, which was really cool.

  • @beas4693
    @beas4693 ปีที่แล้ว

Yay! So fun to see a more experimental process from you! Just to share a general printmaking tip, it's best to set down your roller rubber side up (only the hard plastic should touch the table surface) if you want to keep it nice and round for as long as possible! Super common pet peeve when ppl start printing :0
Keep it up though! I am so excited to see how stamping and printing processes affect your sketchbooks going forward :)) lots of room to experiment
