yes. art is werid. go where you feel the inspiration. one time i was literally drawing bread. it came out good though. lol. i drew good bread though not factory made bread.
Finishing a sketchbook really can be a milestone, a marker before the next achievement. We think every sketchbook has to be at least partly a mad scientist's laboratory where creation for creation's sake can happen without worrying about function or usefulness!
Personally, i LOVE watching artists make self indulgent work & just drawing their silly little characters. I hear you talking about your experience struggling with creativity and feeling like an “original” artist and relate SO much, so it’s especially meaningful to see you do character work & fun work in your sketchbook! Also, I’m the same way abt requests (and commissions). For me it’s demand avoidance, and it makes things so hard 😂
THE MUSIC! THE SKETCHES! THE DOING WHAT AL WANTS! I'm in love with this video and the art you made and the experience you created for us watching it back
I loved this video! Maybe it is an idea to choose like 10 countries and draw something what has to do with each of those countries, for example a dish, costume, landscape, etc. Then you learn about other countries and find all kinds of new things to draw.
I can’t be the only one thinking “please do more indulgent art”! There is nothing better that an artist can produce than what they truly want to make. I’ve always thought you can tell the difference in quality from creating something “from the heart” that an artist really enjoyed, Vs making something because they think more people will like it. Make the art you want (and we will love all of it) 🤍
as someone who mostly only watches draw with me style videos to watch as i draw, make whatever you want! indulgent art is so interesting to watch and I've notice it gives the artist a lot more to talk about. it creates a very organic experience, and it's very nice to watch/listen to as I draw. it also often inspires me to create regardless if what I'm drawing has anything to do with the video or not.
I was thinking this too... I know she said no one would want an original character, but my favorite type of art is characters, character designs, OCs and comics/graphic novels.
yay for indulgent art!! one sketchbook challenge I have done before is limited color palette throughout the whole book- I do a two month deadline for my normal 7x10 canson usually which was a really long time to hang out with just blues and greens but could be fun for a shorter or secondary book. possibilities are limitless!
For what it's worth I really liked seeing you draw random characters and ocs. Loved the apocalypse kid and the nostalgic art. Loved the fig. Loved seeing you use this marker + color pencil technique. Loved most of the spreads in this video honestly. It's so nice seeing so much art in one video and seeing you being so indulgent with your art!
This has nothing to do with anything but that Pedro Pascal as Mario from the SNL skit came out so good. The moment you drew the nose and eyes, I KNEW it was him. Hahaha 😂 I also love that skit. Pedro should be Mario.
have been in love with your ocs for so long, i would love to know more about them!! seeing you draw them again and give them life is so magical, personal and indulgent art is just so much more fun, this video reminded me the reason why i like to draw so much, thank you al!!
SKETCHBOOK IDEA: if you want... TOPIC- tall things. so like draw awkwardly tall animals, or plants. super extendo objects. just whatever have fun with it. make it goofy
This was genuinely such a fun video? It seemed like you had fun drawing your characters, drawing italian pappa Pedro and using all your fave materials! Just a ton of fun. Also the editing? The editing and sound editing in this video were *fabulous* and you truly picked some fun things! Great video c: Have a fun week ahead ✨
Hey, I'm a new subscriber, and I don't know your 'staples' I'm just here because I like your content. So if you want to do an entire video about OCs and little fun artists' "rules" you've created, I'd love to watch it. I'm ok with you switching it up and experimenting or doing things that make you happy. As far as people always recommending things you're known for, I think it's like when someone gets famous for something, so people assume this person loves it to no end and can't get enough. For example, the guy who eats hot wings while interviewing celebrities says while out at restaurants, someone will recognize him and send over a plate of hot wings. As much as he appreciates the sentiment, he doesn't like to eat wings when he's off anymore. So don't feel bad about not always finding enjoyment in what you're 'known for.'
I totally agree with all the comments! Make work for yourself, as a viewer we love that! I think a print of a page filled with your original characters would actually sell! When your heart is in it, it shows in the work, and that's what people connect to I believe.
I go thru my old sketchbooks all the time & Always find things I should finish & just now starting to do just that after who knows how many times I've been thru them
I want you to know that YES people are interested in original character content, that shit is my bread and butter! I love getting a peek into other people's inner worlds. Whenever I see an original character I like I want to know more! I think that depending on what it is you absolutely could make prints of OCs too! I own prints of people's OCs! Good art is good art.
I’d love to know more about your ocs or anything like that and I’d buy a print! 😊 markers and color pencils is such a beautiful look and I used to be able to pull it off but idk what happened lol 😂
this video came out at the perfect time because i just got a new sketchbook and its much smaller than my usual but i already love it so much. thank you for sharing, even if you think we wont like "personal indulgent art" (we do! i love to see what comes out of other artist's brains and what it means fo them). love your vids and happy to be here to witness the journey ❤
You absolutely can sell prints of your OC’s! And I love the indulgent art, you can see the love and care in them! Maybe if you don’t wanna sell those things as prints, you could put a zine of self indulgent art together, people would absolutely love it.❤❤
an alphabet challenge would be cool!! you could set a rule that each consecutive letter cant be of the same realm of the previous one, such as a could be a food beginning with a but then b cant be a food so you could choose a food or place beginning with b, and then c could be an animal again etc
I would love more art of your characters, if that's something you enjoy of course!! all in all I really enjoy your art and watching you create things you enjoy!!
So my goal this year Is to actually finish up my old & new sketchbooks....smh Which will probably take me the rest of the year if I draw everyday. Thanks for aspiring me to get back to Mt sketchbooks Thanks & God Bless & May We All Have A Blessed Year!
Hey Al, I was wondering which ohuhu markers you used for the skin tone on day 2? I got some markers from them last week and I just love how warm and vibrant your skin tones are here :)
out of curiosity how many hours do you usually dedicate to your scetchbook? I really want to start filling out my sketchbook faster (since I'm currently taking around a year for my biggest sketchbook yet) and i think it would really help me as an artist to dedicate more time - which i guess a goal might be good for :)
i have a prompt if you still want any. i hope it will be good. draw/do the mona lisa in your art style in whatever medium you want. or maybe something with a similar vibe if you dont mind. also please do more art of kipp. id like to see more of him.
saying that we wouldn’t be interested in indulgent art is crazy😭we just want to see you make art man💀
exactly 😂its the process we enjoy
Agreed. Yes.
yes I personally love content about original stuff or passions, its much more interesting for me
yes. art is werid. go where you feel the inspiration. one time i was literally drawing bread. it came out good though. lol. i drew good bread though not factory made bread.
there's honestly nothing better than art that was made out of indulgence. somehow it shows in the final product and makes it more enjoyable !
A frog in a cowboy hat is so relatable omg I get prompts like that too and I eat it up every time LOL
hhahaha and i eat up your frogs everytime too!!!!!!!

Man, Al, I loved your video. It's been the first time I've chilled in this stressy week. Love it! You're great.
I love making "personal art" in my sketchbook too❤️
Day 1's music is giving me weather channel in the 90s vibes and I'm here for it.
I totally agree with all the comments! Make work for yourself, as a viewer we love that! I think a print of a page filled with your original characters would actually sell! When your heart is in it, it shows in the work, and that's what people connect to I believe.

You absolutely can sell prints of your OC’s! And I love the indulgent art, you can see the love and care in them!
Maybe if you don’t wanna sell those things as prints, you could put a zine of self indulgent art together, people would absolutely love it.❤❤
OOH a zine is such a good idea omg!!
I found this video on my home page and I absolutely love ure style, immediately subscribed
this was such a fun video to watch 🪄❤️

Hey Al, I was wondering which ohuhu markers you used for the skin tone on day 2? I got some markers from them last week and I just love how warm and vibrant your skin tones are here :)
for lighter/white skin my go-to's are R18, R19, and R20! but those are all p much the same with pink undertones
out of curiosity how many hours do you usually dedicate to your scetchbook?
I really want to start filling out my sketchbook faster (since I'm currently taking around a year for my biggest sketchbook yet) and i think it would really help me as an artist to dedicate more time - which i guess a goal might be good for :)

Wondering, what was your job while you picked up?
what is the name of the band that played the music in the video?
I always love your sketchbook videos 😍 Will you be participating in Sketchbook Revival? It’s a bunch of free workshops focused on sketchbook work.
