Hear's a real story I got about the machine spirit: I work in a factory. Plenty of machine spirits. This literally just happened last week. For those of you who know what a PLC is skip the next paragraph. The easiest way to explain what a PLC is it's an industrial computer that operates the valves and reads computers. One day, our factory just experienced a drop in power. You know, the kind of drop that shuts everything down for 1 second and then reboots everything. Now my factory is old and some systems are remnants of 10+ years ago. Now I'm going to set the scene. There are 2 operator rooms. Let's call them Room 1/2 & 3. These 2 operator rooms control 3 PLCs total. Room 1 Controls PLC1 & 2 (hence the name) and a bit of PLC3. Room 3 is the exact opposite, controls all of 3 and some from 1&2. After this power dip, Operator Room 1/2's controller experience connection problems. This occured midday. Earlier in the morning and the entire month previously it has been working fine. In fact it has not been too long ago I was wondering why Room 1/2 & 3 has the least amount of trouble. It's a very bizzarre one but hey I guess I cursed myself into asking for trouble. Do not upset/challenge the machine spirit. I work in maintenance so naturally this was my job (this will get really technical). When I check the connection from Room 1/2 to the PLCs, it was responded (command prompt pings). So naturally the connection is still present. I tried to do a tried and true tactic... Turning it on and off again, both the controller and the PLC (I know it's a meme but it really does help in occassions). Doesn't work. Okay, check the settings. All the parameters and connection settings are in order, of course this was expected because it was working before. Desperate, I check the ethernet cable's physical condition using a scanner. Ok one kable had a weak signal. Replace both ends of the RJ45 head. Scan again, good signal on all counts. Replug the cables in, still no luck. And so I was there just puzzled what might be the problem for like an hour. This has to be a software thing. So I tried to isolate where the problem is coming from. First, I disabled all of the PLC connections and turn it on one by one. PLC1's connection to the room was fine. Everything is okay. PLC2's turn, all fine there too. The weird part is when I turn on PLC3. For some reason, PLC3 causes the Room's controller to cause an aneurysm. Which is beyond my understanding. Because as previously mentioned, Room 3 has connections too PLC1&2 and that controller is having no problem whatsoever. So now, in order to get it to work, Room 1/2 is running with PLC3's connection disabled despite it being a completely functional thing before the power dip happen. So why am I telling you this long winded story? I'm trying to put it into perspective that the machine spirit is really just softwares doing software things. Sometimes it really is incomprehensible. 40K's technology must be so advanced and the people there so ignorant, everything is a black box to them. Do you know how your smartphone specifically works? Down to the detail of it just turning on and off? Well a electronic repairman might but to the average consumer, it might as well be magic. So the average guardsmen is probably as helpless as the average consumer in trying to repair the average lasgun like the average consumer tries to repair the modern average smartphone. The lack of technological understanding is what gives off the mysticism and thus the machine spirit. Seriously though, sometimes all you can do is pray.
