- Wipe your tears people, the Coraline era on this channel has ended, but the spooky season will still go on strong. I had people asking for other characters like the OTHERS and the cat, but I need to give some attention to specific other movies 😉
Today's video is covering the skinny legend herself: The Other Mother / Beldam, who, by the way, carried this movie on the shoulders (with the help of others of course)
I'm not sure exactly which movie I'm doing next... but it'll most likely be either: Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride OR Paranormab. Stop Motion Animation really has its hooks in me.

The Other Father is such a lowkey amazing character. The whole time he was trying to subtly warn Coraline to get the hell out but he couldn't say it directly in front of the Other Mother.
Then he became squash and drowned

He was my favorite character in the movie 🥺
In the book there's a really sad scene where Coraline finds Other Father mangled and basically half dead and they have a short conversation about Other Mother's control and how it has affected him. I understand why they changed that into a more action-y scene for the movie but I did wish Coraline had more interactions with Other Father to contrast with her dynamic with Other Mother.
He sure had the dad bod for it. He was the goat.
When he sang the song when she first arrived, if you listen to the lyrics, he's literally telling her fate if she stays. Mans was warning her. We stan a caring man.
Fun Fact: Y'all remember the scene when Coraline first got to the other world and the Beldam gave her a cake? The words, "Welcome Home" were written on the cake. The writing was in cursive, and the "o" in "home" is double-looped. Whenever someone writes a cursive "o" and double-loops it, it means they are lying. So the movie was basically hinting that she wasn't actually home. Pretty clever if you ask me..

I love the little detail that Mel (Coraline’s real mom) has a slightly off center nose that curves, which she passed to her daughter. Meanwhile, the Other Mother has a perfectly straight and symmetrical nose.

One particular detail about the Other Mother’s design is how skinny she is. This shows that she is starving to death which is why she’s so desperate to get Coraline.

one thing i love about the beldam as a villain is that her voice is very soothing for most of the screen time she gets, and she has such a wide range of emotion in her tone if you look and listen closely. her VA did amazing!

I wonder what The Other Mother's backstory is. I'd like to guess that all she ever wanted in life was to become a mother, but had her chances denied somehow. Or maybe she did successfully have children of her own but they ended up falling prey to some 'child predator'- and then committed suicide due to never getting over the trauma. And thus, the beldam became the very thing she swore to destroy.

For anyone wondering, she's the Beldam, which is an old term for a witch. The Other Mother's true identity and origins is unknown but we do know she's been luring children into her den for 100s of years. Kind of terrifying

It is also rumored that she is not the one feeding on the souls, but is actually the servant of an even more horrible spider eldritch being, (like Elise from League of Legends) which is why she was terrified and begging Coraline to come back during the chasing door scene

Honestly, the opening scene to Coraline is one of the most iconic scenes in movie history
In the book, when the Other Mother says “You know I love you” Coraline reflects that the Other Mother does genuinely love her, but not in the way a parent is supposed to love their child. She loves her as a pet or favorite doll- a prized possession. I think this definitely comes across in the movie and makes the Other Mother one of the most disturbing villains ever put on screen….
