5:30 "When it calls Joan Mason 'Girl Reporter' that makes it sound to me like she reports on nothing but girls." Which isn't true, of course. In fact, she's completely obsessed with Big Dix. Ahem.
The resemblance is strong, but there are small differences, at least sometimes. Phantom's costume resembles an unitard, is never scaled, has diagonal stripes on its briefs, very noticeable dark boots, never includes goggles, and stopped including gloves fairly early on. Golden Age Blue Beetle is very often scaled, probably to suggest chainmail. It also uses includes gloves with fairly flared cuffs and goggles instead of the domino mask. A tunic of varying length is sometimes present as well.
Also, Phantom's eye irises are hardly ever visible inside his domino mask (and he always has one), and he is always with a pair of gun holsters on his belt.
Someone must have been laughing their asses off while writing that dialog, it's sounds almost like they are using every chance they can to say Big Dix, and they got away with it XD
Well Love Sausage from "The Boys" by Garth Eninis is probably very close to what one would expect. (can't believe it is getting a live-action series lol)
7:00 Oh no! Those goons from Big Dix might shoot their pieces at that lady's face! Will the Long Arm of the Law be able to wrestle down Big Dix's muscle? 7:37 GREAT line reading there, CT. 8:54 Dan, the _last_ thing you should be saying when talking about Big Dix is how you "came" in the window. 14:38 is that Cameron Mitchell?!?
- "it's a big one but I can handle it"!: That's what blue beetle said. - "speaking of a mess. You should see what happens after BLUE BEETLE gets Big Dix". ....
For the golden age it's not such a bad superhero: he has got the tragic backstory, access to police files and fresh cases, an inventor character that makes gadgets for him, a love interest and eventually a sidekick. That's more than most
Maybe a crossover comic featuring Blue Beetle and James Bond going up against Big DIx and Pussy Galore? Too subtle? One of the funniest vids and there have been plenty, Chris! Thanks for posting.
The Blue Beetle is one of my favorite golden age era comic books. I was first exposed to the character through the radio version, which made me search out the comic book. Which, despite it's campiness,I also loved. I've never been much of a fan of Big Dix though 😂
Always enjoy your shows. Ted Kord was an archeology student? Fascinated that BB originated in a blue suit and beetle tie. I think Kirby drew his syndicated newspaper strip, and he had a radio show. A lot of hype for a not-very-popular, sketchy-origin character. Also, kids often double up on slides, adults too.
My first time hearing about the Blue Beetle was the old radio program. It is very fun, I think every episode he gets knocked out and tied up then escapes and then gets the bad guys. I would love to see a collection of the golden age Blue Beetle comics.
Check out Linkara's retrospective of the Blue Beetle. The guy who owned Fox Comics had a habit of ripping stuff off, and the Blue Beetle, while more a ripoff of the Green Hornet, definitely was designed to look like the Phantom.
Love the hotel rooms changing wallpaper colours! @14:46 The wall changes colour each panel from blue, to yellow and red. The carpet changes colour too! Not noticed this before, is it something that happens in golden age comics? Also, great idea Big Dix. Have a button at the top of the stairs that someone could tread on to make the stairs into a slide.
This was a nice lighthearted change from the Cerebus episode, good stuff! Reminds me of how wacky the stories were when I was reading the golden age Green Lantern comics.
You're one in a handful of youtubers whose longform videos I watch and rewatch constantly. Not only you have a lot of knowledge about what you're talking about but also, and more importantly, a lot of passion, and that's hard to find nowadays. Thanks for all the hard work and hours of entertainment!
I want you to know that I appreciate that you speak openly about your depression in several of your videos. As a fellow sufferer, I love that you help by removing our condtion out of the shadows. I just wanted to thank you Chris. Keep up the good work.
My interpretation of that "Beetle Signal" is that it probably functions in a similar way to Spider-Man's belt-mounted flashlight signal. You know, the one that he flashes onto a wall and looks sorta like his mask?
Hey dude, I love your videos. They're really good, feel good videos that do seem quite well thought out and fun. I gotta ask though are you into any of the more independent sort of modern graphic novels too? Such as Maus or Persepolis? And if so it would be cool to see a video of you having a deep dive into them. Still love the content so keep doing what you're doing!
YAY! Man I LOVE when you look at oldies comics (30 to 70) But the great thing with the Golden Age is à bunch of the heros we dont know. So we discover with pure delight (Mister Wiskers LOL) Plus your funny cracks because of the naiveté or just cheap writing. Thank you.
It’s (High-mee). You really should watch the Young Justice cartoon. It’s got episodes written by people like Peter David. It’s fantastic. And I can’t wait to see Girl Reporter and Lady Cop team up!
You are a wonderful, beautiful man, and I love those intros. Special request: Can we get a video all about the early mask characters. Characters like The Clock, The Green Hornet, The Shadow, and The Spider. I like to call them business suit heroes, basically characters that aren't wearing a full blown costume, but rather just a scarf or a mask. The Clock's is the best. It's just a cloth sewn to the lining of his hat that drops down when he needs it, but I hear Blue Beetle started as a business suit hero, too.
I’ve been reading Batman’s golden age comics and he always made Dad jokes and had panels that read out of order and inconsistent. Just some quirks of the early days before we got everything figured out
During the '50s, guys with names shortened to Dix from Dixon were common - but not with an ascribed size. Which leads us to see that the producers of this BB episode thought their sneaky joke was one the most hilarious of all time, much like the classic "boner" routine used in a certain episode of Batman comics. Why they did several (non-hilarious) "backwards reading" balloons is a mystery, though. (And easily fixed today via a few flops and cut-and-pastes from any photo program.)
Having read a lot of Golden Age comics, having to figure out word balloon order is a very common problem. Goes to show how a lot of creators didn't really know what they were doing during that early period.
Another great episode! Have you done an episode about public domain héroes? Always wondered how the had a Blue Beetle in Project Superpowers, thanks for clearing that!
Man you should do a video on MLJ's The Shield. Wanna know more about why the OG Captain America didn't become more famous than the copycat and what should have been done to make the character more well known amongst the casuals and hardcore comic book fans
Archie Andrews, fucking Archie Andrews, that's why. Archie comics were a bigger money-maker, so the publisher decided to drop the Shield in Archie's favor. absorbascon.blogspot.com/2008/12/shield-destroyed-by-worst-villain-of.html
It's really more about politics and religion. In the early 20th century, the Democrats were the party of reactionary politics, racism, and religious intolerance. Then in the mid-century the Republicans made a devil's deal with christian zealots, hitching their wagon to the horses of the Southern Baptists and prosperity doctrine, and things flipped, with the Republicans becoming the party of bigotry, classism, and Manifest Destiny. It's no coincidence that you saw a simultaneous backlash against comics, unions, collectivism, minority civil rights, and anything which smacked of too much fun to a fundamentalist christer. As the horror comics industry was being driven into nonexistence by this, the comics industry saw the supposed "wholesomeness" of Archie as a better risk than capes and spandex. You saw other comics companies also abandoning their riskier stuff, like lurid detective stories and war stories, in favour of teen romance and "funnies."
Between pausing to read that sweet Big Dix content and the genuine hilarity of the dialogue....lol ☠ It has been everything I can do to not make about a million Big Dix jokes, but I'll keep it to the clean material.
The Blue Beetle takes his clothes off and shouts "I must get Big Dix" priceless!
Thought I was the only one that noticed that gem. lol
5:30 "When it calls Joan Mason 'Girl Reporter' that makes it sound to me like she reports on nothing but girls."
Which isn't true, of course. In fact, she's completely obsessed with Big Dix.
Ahem.
IRS: "It says here you marked a box of spaghetti as a deductible?"
CT: "Yeah, it was for a show..."
Michael Scally lol 😆
His costume is just a colour-shifted Phantom, right down to the sort of widow's peak hood.
The resemblance is strong, but there are small differences, at least sometimes.
Phantom's costume resembles an unitard, is never scaled, has diagonal stripes on its briefs, very noticeable dark boots, never includes goggles, and stopped including gloves fairly early on.

Thought my eyes were deceiving me there for a minute 🤔
Someone must have been laughing their asses off while writing that dialog, it's sounds almost like they are using every chance they can to say Big Dix, and they got away with it XD
Ted could never resist the power of Big Dix.
No one can
I can't wait to see Grant Morrison's reinterpretation of the classic villain Big Dix... err...
You know he would
Well Love Sausage from "The Boys" by Garth Eninis is probably very close to what one would expect.
(can't believe it is getting a live-action series lol)
Your adolescent delight in saying ‘Big Dix’ never got old.
You said dix! Uh huh huh huh huh huh huh!
Reminds me of Adam Sessler and that Ultimate Muscle character he thought was so funny.
@@diverguy3556 Settle down, Beavis.
We all saw his choice of shirts for this video.
I'm 50, and I was giggling like a middle schooler throughout this entire episode! Thanks Chris!
BIG DIX MUST BE STOPPED" - reporter girl
Are you *sure* about that?
Literally cried laughing at "So you see, I must get Big Dix!"
7:00 Oh no! Those goons from Big Dix might shoot their pieces at that lady's face! Will the Long Arm of the Law be able to wrestle down Big Dix's muscle?
7:37 GREAT line reading there, CT.

I miss when popculture characters could have names that are straightup inuendos that absolutely no one could dismiss
Chris's voicework at it's best here.
Blue Beetle handles big dix? I knew him and Booster were close but..
(Yes I know that's Ted and this is Dan but come on, how could I not?)
I love the commitment to the intro.
Super-cop is considered an illegal activity, so taking a super-hero identity is actually a smart move.
2:12 is Sparky's hand helping the Blue Beetle combat their arch nemesis Blue Balls?
Spakry should come back as the Frozen Private(totally not a Winter Soldier Ripoff).
The most hilarious Comic Tropes episode.
Second to his Defenders episode.
So as you see, I've got to get Big Dix!
The Blue Beetle is one of my favorite golden age era comic books. I was first exposed to the character through the radio version, which made me search out the comic book.
Which,despite it's campiness,I also loved.
I've never been much of a fan of Big Dix though
😂
The commitment of this man to the intros is trully impressive
We need to bring back Dan Garret so he can time-travel and fight Biggus Dickus.
Page 1 dead infants, that's how you know you're in the Golden Age of Comics.
Thank Kirby for the advent of photocopiers making flipping art a thousand times easier for low-budget comics.
This has to be the most savage episode you've ever made
This is comedy gold, and the way you keep a straight face when you say " Big Dix are killing kids" lol
My first time hearing about the Blue Beetle was the old radio program.
It is very fun, I think every episode he gets knocked out and tied up then escapes and then gets the bad guys.
I would love to see a collection of the golden age Blue Beetle comics.
You gotta give him props for absolutely committing to the opening bits
Oh Fuck, I haven't cried this much laughing! Thanks for brightening my day Chris!!!
Honestly, how can you not be a Patreon subscriber for a man willing to spill a pot of pasta on himself JUST for an opening.
I'm pretty sure the writers who made Big Dix were snickering like elementary school students when they first came up with the name. I'd be, too!
I love these light episodes. Don't be afraid to do more of them.
Oh Lord, I needed that intro! It was the perfect thing to perk up my day!!
The start of this video is a work of art.
This episode's one of your funniest so far.
Hey Chris, love your show !
(Damn it I put my word balloons the wrong way around !)
Blue Beetle looks like he's about to do the washing up.
I’m such a child. I can’t stop laughing at this and this isn’t even my 1st time hearing about Big Dix.
Hilarious
Intro...
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thanks man,you made my day.
It reminded me of watching the Titans series. "I also care about Dick!" "I love Dick too much" 😂😂😂
Why does the Blue Beetle look like a Phantom knockoff ?
My thoughts exactly
Because his costume is "inspired" by the Phantom
Check out Linkara's retrospective of the Blue Beetle. The guy who owned Fox Comics had a habit of ripping stuff off, and the Blue Beetle, while more a ripoff of the Green Hornet, definitely was designed to look like the Phantom.
Your reviews are a thing of joy...especially with spilled and messy pasta!
"Dr Franz? It's Beetle. I need a vitamin to help with my Big Dix problem!"
This was a nice lighthearted change from the Cerebus episode, good stuff! Reminds me of how wacky the stories were when I was reading the golden age Green Lantern comics.

Thank you for this one. This comic was a riot. Lol. I was laughing the whole way through.
If I were create a supervillian team, I would pair several female super villains with him and call them Chicks with Big Dix.
Futa Squad.
there is a movie called "White Chicks", those are chicks with big dix
Opening with some slap-stick; nice. Good episode. Thanks
So does Dan Garret, supercop, pair well with DC's Lady Cop?
I want you to know that I appreciate that you speak openly about your depression in several of your videos. As a fellow sufferer, I love that you help by removing our condtion out of the shadows. I just wanted to thank you Chris. Keep up the good work.
Hell yes!!!!! THIS is exactly why I subscribed to Comic Tropes!!!!
I knew a good old Golden age analysis would be coming soon, great video!
there goes "Big Dix" selling his "wood..." 5:47
Chris: spills spaghetti all over himself.
Me: 😂😂 the dedication this man has
Oh man. This is hilarious. One of your best finds in a long, long time.
This was genuinely hilarious. Thank you.
He’s pitching and handling Big Dix all in one comic. Very versatile.
You know Chris, you're not half bad with this voice over stuff hahaha
Dan Garret walks by me in an elley, "BIG DIX MUST BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE!"
Me, in the alley, "as a guy with a smaller 'unit' I say ABOUT TIME!"
This is EASILY my favourite ComicTropes...The spaghetti opening was retro actively perfect because it was nonsensical, like the story.
I love big dix. Great villain and undiscovered character complexity.
My interpretation of that "Beetle Signal" is that it probably functions in a similar way to Spider-Man's belt-mounted flashlight signal. You know, the one that he flashes onto a wall and looks sorta like his mask?

That's a waste of some delicious Pasta. But, great intro!
YAY! Man I LOVE when you look at oldies comics (30 to 70) But the great thing with the Golden Age is à bunch of the heros we dont know. So we discover with pure delight (Mister Wiskers LOL) Plus your funny cracks because of the naiveté or just cheap writing. Thank you.

I also love Ted Kord, and Jamie Reyes.
I love when you use the Old Timey Movie voice for the girl reporter.
I love that intro skit so much. Keep up the great work Chris!
This channel is an incredible surprise. Congratulations and thank you for the great content!
I don't know why but you saying"I AM READY TO BATTLE CRIME" and Garet's derpy face made me fucking howl in laughter lol.
I can’t decide which “oh hi” moment I like best, this one was pretty good
I love your openings. They remind me of Hollywood Steve
You caught me becoming estranged from my spouse.
Hollywood Steve ;) Chris has said it is a direct reference to Yacht Rock.
Hi you caught me beating big dix
I always learn new things from your videos about comics I never knew about. I really enjoy your channel and hope you keep making amazing content!
I heard about this story from atop the 4th wall and I still cannot believe that there was a gangster called Big Dix in comics.
A gangster called Big Dix who is huge, purple, and has a bulbous head...
Great episode! Who doesn't like Big Dix?! Also have to show some love for that fantastic banana shirt! Keep up the great work sir!
I like how out of costume Dan Garrett keeps bragging about himself and saying the Blue Beetle could do something better.
6:05 Damn! Good catch on the reverse dialogue. Never would’ve caught it.
I'm excited to hear your comics that you've made Chris! 😊
Big Dix must be brought to justice!
Hahaha! This is a great episode!
It’s (High-mee). You really should watch the Young Justice cartoon. It’s got episodes written by people like Peter David. It’s fantastic.

Speaking of a mess ,lets talk a crazy golden age comic!!
Yup
I’ve been reading Batman’s golden age comics and he always made Dad jokes and had panels that read out of order and inconsistent. Just some quirks of the early days before we got everything figured out

Yeah like Savage Dragon - wait what?
I wonder if Mr Larson has a copy of this comic?

- The Way of Tuco
I'm dying with laughter watching this! Love your exploration of golden age comics
all that pasta just for a "you caught me' pun. worth it XD
That was kinda long but very satisfying.
Having read a lot of Golden Age comics, having to figure out word balloon order is a very common problem. Goes to show how a lot of creators didn't really know what they were doing during that early period.
Biggus Dickus: finally, a worthy opponent, our battle will be legendary!
Another great episode! Have you done an episode about public domain héroes? Always wondered how the had a Blue Beetle in Project Superpowers, thanks for clearing that!
I wanna make my own Version, where Big Dix is Reimagine as a Normal Osborn/Lex Luthor/Kingpin Hybrid.
Man you should do a video on MLJ's The Shield. Wanna know more about why the OG Captain America didn't become more famous than the copycat and what should have been done to make the character more well known amongst the casuals and hardcore comic book fans

laughed so hard about the extra dorky intro and "I'll plug yuh fer OW-W-!!". Also you picked the perfect shirt for this episode :)
