  • The leader of Sinn Féin, Mary Lou McDonald spoke to Kay Burley about the realities of Brexit. She explained how concerns surrounding the peace process were ignored by Brexiteers and only recently there is begun some sort of understanding about what is going on in Ireland.

No, that is not how it would actually work.
There is NO possibility of any referendum in Ireland🇮🇪 concerning Irish unification, UNLESS and UNTIL a majority in Northern Ireland(NI) have voted to leave the UK in a referendum.
At the moment, all available evidence indicates that were such a referendum to beheld in NI today, it would be resoundingly defeated.

Sinn Féin won 36 seats in the last general elections (out of 160), the same as reigning Fianna Fáil and two more than their coalition partners, Fine Gael. The big two (Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael) then formed a coalation with the Greens to keep SF out of power. SF is gaining more and more support these days because they have, at least in the Republic, moved away from being the political wing of the IRA and now actual campaign on things people care about. Current polls put them at 33%, FF and FG both at around 20. One big thing SF campaigns on is the housing crisis. I now live in this country for 19 years and I have seen government after government do absolutely nothing about it. The town I live in proudly announced that 40 new housing units have been given planning permission. That's fantastic, just that low estimates say that 250 are needed and those 40 will be snapped up by large real estate companies and rented out at prices that are so sky high you get nosebleeds. I have a full-time job that pays decent money and I share an apartment because it's either that and have some sort of life or live by myself and have virtually no disposable income once rent, bills and necessities are paid. If I could vote, SF it would be for me, too.

Anybody who has actually read the text of the GFA will be familiar with the very first strand, called the "Declaration of Support". This addresses the commitments made by both the Irish and British governments to uphold and stand guarantor over all the procedures, new institutions and joint initiatives that the GFA set up - basically a joint promise that neither side would ever do anything to jeopardize these in any way, at least in unilateral form.
It is broken into chapters, Chapter 5 of which states:
" We pledge that we will, in good faith, work to ensure the success of each and every
one of the arrangements to be established under this agreement. It is
accepted that all of the institutional and constitutional arrangements - an
Assembly in Northern Ireland, a North/South Ministerial Council,
    implementation bodies, a British-Irish Council and a British-Irish
Intergovernmental Conference and any amendments to British Acts of
Parliament and the Constitution of Ireland - are interlocking and
interdependent and that in particular the functioning of the Assembly and
the North/South Council are so closely inter-related that the success of
each depends on that of the other."
Note the bit where the UK acknowledged that the Irish constitution and its own body of Parliamentary Acts would henceforth remain in "lock-step", which now by international treaty must take priority if and when any issue arose which might otherwise threaten the implementation or function of the named institutions. The Irish duly amended their own constitution to bring it into lock-step, just as the UK passed the GFA into domestic law. And, according to the GFA, this was now to become a legally enforced status quo - with no side unilaterally taking any threatening constitutional initiative without at least ensuring that the other side agreed and did likewise.
Now, ask yourself what was Brexit if not a radical and fundamental constitutional change within the UK that could only ever be interpreted as a direct reneging on the commitment made above? Where was the attempt even to request that the Irish also implement the same constitutional change (ie. leave the EU as well and at the same time) that would be required to maintain this lock-step? In fact where was the commitment even to maintaining the new constitutional status quo particular to Northern Ireland as also promised? The huge constitutional revision that was Brexit included NI too, whether NI wanted it or not.
To my mind, even before the UK's threat to trash the Withdrawal Agreement in breach of international law, the very moment it passed a Parliamentary Act allowing the invocation of Article 50, the "EU resignation letter", was itself such a breach. In fact an even more egregious breach than the one that has grabbed the headlines more recently.
Diplomatically, Ireland chose not to pursue this breach - pursual alone would also threaten peace in NI. The British knew this would stay the other's hand so simply saw this as a green light to proceed. Whatever levels of ignorance may or may not prevail within British media, the fact that not a single voice in any quarter of British media, journalism, commentary or indeed politics has ever been heard to point out this overtly criminal betrayal - at least to me - speaks volumes about the British as a people. There is no evidence indeed that they even understand the criminality involved.
They are not criminals through intent, one is left to deduce. They are criminals by nature.

"As part of the agreement, the British parliament repealed the Government of Ireland Act 1920 (which had established Northern Ireland, partitioned Ireland and asserted a territorial claim over all of Ireland) and the people of the Republic of Ireland amended Articles 2 and 3 of the Constitution of Ireland, which asserted a territorial claim over Northern Ireland."
Both of which were dependent on the others implementation. Nothing about keeping each others future legislation in as you call it "lock step" was ever intended as it was only related to the above amendments.

Interesting video. Well done getting her point across, Mary Lou McDonald. Things to add. Sinn Fein are the largest party in the NI government. Sky News and BBC News presenters are under strict instructions to toe the hard Brexit line - all in the name of representing the people of course. The Tories are so vehemently opposed to Sinn Fein that I would contend that the peace process was stalled under John Major's premiership. It was the hard work of American politicians and the election of Tony Blair that enabled the Good Friday Agreement to get over the line. It is also pressure from America that is largely responsible for the Tories failing so far to wreck it.

There was no mention of Northern Ireland peace process because Brexit was sold as future trading being the same as before.
Brexit was never going to be a clever idea, hence for 'democratic' reasons it needed to be done with a damage limitation attitude; but the Tories were totally incompetant, arrogant and reckless in the management of UK's exit from the EU.

The consequences of Brexit for Northern Ireland and the Good Friday Agreement is criminal negligence. It just proves that all the time Brexit was never about the UK, it was about England, and the fantasies and interests of English politicians. It's frightening how little people know about the situation regarding the island of Ireland and the responsibility we all have to keeping the peace. As someone from England I'm tired of NI, Scotland, and Wales being treated time and time again as second class members. It's a moral obligation to sort out this mess, my personal fix would be to rejoin the EU since it's the only sane option, but failing that a customs union.

When it comes to be in charge there is still a lot of "arson around". From a personal perspective, I did not, in my younger days, entirely understand what the whole NI thing was. You can imagine that an English education tended to gloss over things if they mentioned it at all. For most of us then it seemed to be a religious disagreement, protestants vs catholics. So its been necessary to learn from elsewhere to get the issues straight in my head. And lots of things have moved on in 25 years. I'm guessing Kay Burley may not have been down that path. I'd also guess that there are still many in England and Westminster in particular who still dont get it ...and for people wrapped up their Brexit, dont care. Need to treat anything from Westminster with some caution.
