I’d say “I Saw Her Standing There”, it’s just a great rock song that starts the album with a bang! Also the count-in at the start is iconic!

Got to be "Twist and Shout" even though it is a cover and only because of Lennon's vocals. Magic!

Twist And Shout! John's last song scratchy vocal is epic! The Isley Brother's version is quite good also.

Warren....This Beatles series is a "Marvelous" idea (to use your vernacular). Jerry Hammack did a great job too breaking down each song's history. He was a bundle of information. I totally enjoyed watching how the first Beatles album was made and amazed at how they could nail a song down very fast many times.
I was a huge Beatles fan, even years before learning guitar. It's possible they were the inspiration for me to learn guitar...my memory is fuzzy! When I finally got my first guitar I used to listen to and try and learn their songs whenever possible. I also remember a cool book with a bright blue cover and a photo of Paul, George, John and Ringo in gold, like statues. It was called the "Golden Beatles" with many of their songs in the book. (The book I still own today and recently found it while cleaning my attic!)...
Funny story: I was only playing guitar a short time and my guitar teacher showed me the guitar lick in "Day Tripper", which was the coolest lick at the time. (It's still cool). I was just a beginner, so I didn't know my guitar teacher showed the part to me in the key of G, instead of E. I was like, this can't be right. So with out a true understanding of different keys yet, I used to de-tune my guitar so while I was playing in key of G, it matched what was coming out of my small record player in the key of E. This way I could play along. Later, of course, I realized what the problem was...That darn guitar teacher!
By the way, I have a ton of original Beatles 45 RPM records from the 1960s as my Grandparents owned a tavern/pub and every time the man came into change 45s in the Jukebox, my grandparents would give me all the records he took out! (That was true of all the records he removed). Most of the Beatles records I have are on Capital Records with the orange and yellow labels, but I remember, "Twist And Shout" was on a different label (yellow color I believe and if I remember correctly, "Please Please Me" was on a black colored label). I must make a trip to my attic and find out what I have!
Worth re-mentioning...The Beatles series is a great idea, Warren. I am totally elated! I also thought you'd get a kick out of the "Day Tripper" story...
    All The Best,
    Philip

Excellent interview! Twist and Shout - I sang lead on this song in a cover band when I was 16 years old (40+ years ago) so it's interesting to hear the explanation of why Lennon's voice sounded the way it did. It's a difficult song to sing and capture that emotion with a rested voice, I can't imagine singing it after so many hours in the studio. I wonder how many producers would have chose to come back another day to record it, when Lennon was rested. I'm sure glad they didn't.

One of the most important, overlooked magical aspects of these songs (with the exception of Love Me Do and P.S. I Love You) was the fact that the guitars were just a few hairs under standard Concert Pitch (A440 Hz). They range from 431 Hz to 437 Hz. If you're a musician playing along with the album, you'll have to re-tune your instrument to match the songs. A killer debut album, might possibly be the best one of all time!

I'm 65 now and I remember making my parents watch the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show the first time they played. It was electric! I knew right then and there that I wanted to be a rock musician. My parents HATED them! "Look how long their hair is!" still rings in my ears. Now, I have my own little studio and have toured Canada and Europe. I even have the same birthday as Paul McCartney! June 18. AND I'm even left handed. I'm just not quite as talented and Macca. By a long shot!

Incredible video and historic material on this earth shaking album. It's must be extremely hard if not impossible for some people to really put this into perspective if you didn't live during this time period and experience it happening in real time. It was so life changing to hear this totally new approach to music coming out the off the radio. Think about how young these four guys were and the immense raw talent they had and live playing experience from playing the hard-ass clubs of Hamburg. It was an extraordinary time in history, musically speaking. A musical revolution as they say - and it truly was. Just take the time to think about all the wonderful hits of 1963 we were listening to like "Hey Paula" and "Can't Get Use to Losing You" (Andy Williams) and don't forget classics like "Blue Velvet" (Bobby Vinton). Boy did we need The Beatles to shake things up. Great hearing the in-depth recording details of the songs and equipment used during this recording session. I would love to hear your take on what happened the stereo mix of "She Loves You"! Thank you Jerry for your years of hard work and sacrifice to brings these books wonderful books to us. I love it when Warren does these types of videos. So cool to hear how they did it back in the day. I'm an analog audio engineer who now works in the digital domain, it is truly amazing to see where music production has gone....some good and some bad. Back in the day, you really had to work out your parts and trim the fat, so to speak, because of your limitations. Today, no so much...maybe that's why music was so much better back then. But, I guess that is subjective....like all music.

    • @thebeatlesrecordingreferen8667
      @thebeatlesrecordingreferen8667 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks for watching, PolyPhonic! There's certainly many lessons you can carry forward from the past to make your music of today stronger and trimming the fat is one of them! The limitations and workarounds we face now are different, but they are still there. It's in them that creativity is born.

It would be interesting to analyze that during the recording sessions of Love Me Do played by Ringo, on September 4, 1962, George and John had not yet acquired their Gibson J-160e guitars. Those photos showing them receiving their new instruments at Rushworth's Music House were taken on September 10, 1962. They were so amazed by their new guitars that they used both of them on "Love Me Do", "PS I Love You", "Please Please Me", "Ask Me Why" and lots of album songs... just like "Anna", "Do You Want To Know A Secret", "A Taste Of Honey", "There's A Place"...
The question remains ... Did George Harrison play with another acoustic guitar during the recordings of the September 4th or the versions released on single and album were both recorded by Andy White???

I either read or heard on a podcast that The Beatles were somewhat foisted on George Martin because the powers that be at EMI disapproved of Martin having an affair with his secretary. Martin apparently wasn’t that interested in The Beatles, but all at Abbey Road who were involved at the studio had an epiphany moment during the production and recording of the ‘Please Please Me’ single I believe. Martin instantly declared that they should do an album and got fully behind the Beatles until the very end. I don’t think even Brian Epstein was looking towards an album at the time, it was all about getting a few singles out before the ‘fad’ died out. The Beatles had the talent to ensure that they weren’t just a fad.

Love Me Do might be known as charting at 17 but there were many different charts at the time and it charted differently in each of them. Lewisohn shows how it remained in the top 20 for a very long time as they toured it so it would sell out where they played. Many singles entered charts, went higher and dropped out while LMD was still there so its total sales were much higher than the chart position would indicate.

Lots of pop songs started w an intro as " do you want to know a secret " one that comes to mind is " take good care of my baby " Bobby Vee 1962 wrote by Goffin/King a song which George also sang at the time. Another one...." Runaround Sue " , I'm sure there's others, just can't think of them ( The Beatles did again too w " If I Fell " ) . The Beach Boys would do it in '63 w " Be True To Your School "

Ron Richards was certainly a producer worth his salt at Abbey Road. Amongst other artists he produced most of The Hollies records during the 60s, and The Hollies were definitely on par with the Beatles when it came to top 10 singles in the UK in the 60s 😎👍

The idea of an album was conceived on the 16th November 62 at a meeting George Martin held with the boys the original plan being a live album at the Cavern. This was purely based on the success of Love Me Do which had surprised George Martin as he really didn't rate it and did nothing to promote it.

I'm back. Excellent video. My eyes glaze over when talking about the names and numbers of machines and mics but the method totally captures me.
So I guess when they're bouncing to another machine for a so called 'S.I.' it's a 'live' mix? Meaning they can't adjust levels later?
An added detail, Ringo was playing his 'Premier' drum kit which he got in 59-60. He then got the Ludwig set later in 63. Consequently the drum sound changes quite a bit by 'She Loves You'.
Another added detail: I'm too lazy to look it up right this minute but I think EMI made the decision to keep all session reels in the summer of 63. Not 66. Which explains all the alternate takes available.
He probably meant 63 anyway. Slip of the tongue.
Another detail: It seems stereo and mono mixes were constructed separately which on the odd occasion meant that different takes or edits would accidentally be used. The specific example that comes to mind is Please Please Me. Because of someone singing a wrong lyric on the last verse, John let's out a slight chuckle as he starts the last 'come on...' on the stereo version. The mono version used a ' correct' take.
Which I suppose gives proof? to the fact that the mono mix was more important.
Just my 10 cents worth. I enjoyed that video and his research is amazing. Love it.
    Cheers.
My favorite song is There's a Place.

Thanks Derek! An SI - superimposition - is an overdub. When bouncing to another machine, it's called a 'tape reduction remix', and yes - once the bounce is done, that work is committed. As to EMI's trash policy, I'm not sure when they made a point of keeping everything, but there are holes in the Beatles archive due to it.

Very interesting comment about DYWTKAS. I see the intro as a micro recitativo (almost spoken) fused to the melody of the rest of the song, which could be seen as the aria. That is something you see on baroque opera. I know The Beatles didn't know about baroque opera at the time, but that's my take on it.

  • @terrythekittieful

It's a great party album. For anyone under 30, the ancient sound might be unfamiliar to modern ears and not that easy to persevere with, at first hearing, ...but it's well worth persevering with. It has a fresh optimistic sound (due to recent remastering) as though a time machine from 1962 has brought these upstart kids to the 21st century for your ears alone. The covers 'Anna' and 'Twist and Shout' are superb, almost like the Beatles are claiming those songs as their own and originals like 'I Saw Her Standing' and 'Please Please Me' set the tone for what the Beatles would be doing from this ground zero moment to the manic years 24 months ahead.

Great 'listen for' Picker's Grip. The pace at which the Please Please Me album sessions were recorded can be readily illustrated with 'Chains'. Distortion and crackling are present in Lennon's guitar part, likely caused by a loose guitar connection to his amplifier (starting at around the 1:02 mark).

Actually, at 17:15 Jerry makes a bit of a common error putting Goffin and King in the Brill Building which was 1619 Broadway. Where it is true that was the location of most of the Tin Pan Alley composers such as Harry Warren and Al Duben and Burt Bacharach and Hal David, the real hits from 1960 to 1967 came out of 1650 Broadway, where Goffin and King wrote Will You Love Me Tomorrow, The Loco-Motion and Up On The Roof. It's where Neil Sedaka wrote Calendar Girl and Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Chip Taylor wrote Wild Thing and Angel Of The Morning, Bert Berns wrote Twist And Shout and Piece Of My Heart and Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil wrote Blame It On The Bossa Nova and On Broadway.

Hi, I have a few questions Warren, hope you don't mind:
    1. According to Mark Lewisohn, the BTRs were also capable of 30ips and Misery was recorded on that speed then George Martin recorded his piano fill in at 15ips. Was Mark wrong on this?
    2. About the title track (Please Please Me), particularly the stereo mix, there seem like an out-of-sync thing going on. Like somebody played back another tape of the song. What was happening here? I also listened to the mono mix and this out-of-sync thing is not present.
    3. Considering that Please Please Me and Ask Me Why have true stereo mixes from the same session for the mono singles, how it had survived to be given a proper stereo mix the next year but Love Me Do and P.S. I Love You's twin track tape disposed in no time. I am aware that many pop and rock master tapes for single releases were disposed or reused after the singles were released, so it is quite interesting that the master tapes of PPM and AMW survived long enough to be given a stereo mix the next year. Again according to Mark Lewisohn - the 4 early songs were all recorded to 2-track tape.
    4. Though The Beatles did a proper recording of How Do You Do It, they ultimately rejected its release. Could it be that if they must record a cover that they only will do songs by American artists? All their covers were originally recorded by Americans (well Maggie Mae does not count hehehe).
    5. Was the Gibson J-160E both mic'ed and plugged to an amp at the same time? Since Jerry Hammack said Do You Want To Know A Secret had both Paul and George used the Gibson J-160E, the guitar fill in before the main body of the song sounds like an electric guitar. I never knew it was also an acoustic until now.
One has to note that John Lennon was suffering from a bad cold the PPM album was recorded and they did not take lunch! During lunch break the Beatles did not leave the studio, they stayed behind and rehearsed for their next songs to be recorded; they have bottles of milk to keep them full!
Sorry for the long comment but the video DID kept me so interesting, I am taking notes because I will do another tribute to the Beatles on my radio broadcast on Sunday :-)

Hi Bryan - let me try and help. 1. Mark had it wrong. The machine ran and 7.5 and 15 ips. 2. the mono and stereo versions are different. There were a couple mono mixes, one unedited and the other edited. The stereo version is an edit, so that's what you are hearing with the out-of-sync quality. 3. The disposal of session tapes at EMI wasn't methodical, so some original reels did survive. 4. They didn't reject it's release so much as Martin thought their own material was stronger. 5. Yes - mic'ed and plugged in. This was par for the course. They would blend the signal based on the desired result. Thanks so much for watching!
