Great video Dr Mix! One thing people often don't know is that all records in the Beatles era UK had to play on AM radio with around only 5kHz bandwidth. The aim was always to make the tunes sound good when the radio signal couldn't even reproduce a cymbal or hi hat sound. The tunes were always mixed to be clear and audible in the mid range. A by-product of that was they always sounded great when played on also better equipment.
The Beatles did not even use 8 track tape decks until 1968 (White Album) and that was not at Abbey Roads because Abbey Roads did not have an 8 track until later.
Makes one realize how much even a "cheap home studio" is no excuse for recording good music.
Absolutely correct, David Gilmour and Pink Floyd recorded the last two Pink Floyd records, momentary lapse of reason and division Bell, in an extremely small room on a boat. Home studios are absolutely no excuse for bad recording. Also when you consider how many of the older albums from the 60s and 70s were recorded in basements and other rooms that have absolutely no acoustic treatment, It makes you realize a great album can be recorded anywhere.

They did have an 8-track at Abbey Road about halfway through the recording of The White Album, first used on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

Incredible. Lately I've been approaching my own work from the perspective of writing for and recording an orchestra, no matter the style or instrumentation. If it isn't right right away, or close, it's just not right in the first place.

They were all Beatle fans to the man. They have mentioned that the concept for Bohemian Rhapsody was inspired by Beatles harmonies in Michelle, Because, Here There And Everywhere.

Geoff Emerick used the C12 in figure 8 and kept it at a distance of 4 to 6 feet from the bass amp on Sgt Pepper. Geoff was always keen to add ambiance to Paul's bass. When he took over as engineer he would try to add some chamber reverb to Paul's bass, but Paul would always tell him to take it off. He finally was able to achieve the added ambience, without offending Paul, by distant micing the amp, as well as having the mic in figure 8 to pick up some extra room tone. And Geoff has refuted that he ever recorded Paul's bass DI. That was possibly done by other engineers during the White Album and Abbey Road.
This is a very good surprise, The Beatles who broke the recording techniques boundaries are The Godfathers of Audio exploitation. The technology they got the EMI engineers to create and the rules they broke no one or group comes close.
This was absolutely riveting listening.Thanks Claudio and Jerry. For me, it'll be Beatles forever. Because of them, I grew up dreaming that "one day" I too might be in a band and experience the power and magic of music creation and playing live. Well, even though the horse has bolted , my dream is still alive! And always will be, thanks to them.

Am a lifelong Beatles fan...
Some mics I have got and or used to have. AKG C414 XLS, Beyerdynamic M69, Shure sm58 and Shure sm57, I used to have a Neumann U47, dunno what happened to it though. An AKG drum mic kit, and a PZM mic... too many to mention really.

rob b - Is true... I'm talking 20 years ago, I think it got stolen. I used to run after school workshops at my studio, but after various things going wrong I stopped doing it... some teens don't seem to have respect for ppl and property, or they didn't back then. Now I just run my studio on a recommended basis or you have to know me personally. :)
Very good stuff in this video. I think my top 3 Beatles songs are I'm only sleeping, Lucy in the sky with diamonds, and Blackbird. Oh there are many others hehehe.

"Twist And Shout" recorded on Two Days. Not the One Take at the End of the All Day "Please Please Me" session. The "Folklore" is the LP was recorded in a Single Day. That's a Lie. There are many lie's about the Beatles. Beatles engineer Richard Lush said Ringo couldn't keep time all the way through a song and so Most Beatles backing tracks were edited together from 2 or 3 takes.
Norman Smith was their 1st engineer. Richard Lush was Geoff Emerick's assistant when he took over for Norman Smith in 66. Twist and Shout was recorded in two takes, not two days. They used the 1st take for the record. Four of the songs on Please Please Me were recorded at the end of the previous year as singles. The rest of the album was recorded in one day. And where did you get that Ringo couldn't keep time? It's always been noted that Ringo kept such good time that it made edits much easier because of how good he was at keeping the same tempo. The reason for such edits weren't because of Ringo having poor timing.

Can't give you 3 favourites. I like them all. A Day in the life...Eleanor Rigby...Strawberry Fields...A Northern Song. Also after the Beatles, 2 songs that give me chills are When We Was Fab and Free As A Bird (especially).
What a great show. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Whether we know it or not, the Beatles influenced everything we do in music, from the writing to the recording.

This is annoying a flies on shit. It appears you may have deliberately deleted frames on your guest video for the sole purpose of creating those annoying jump cuts now made famous by content "creators" to give it some sort of "reality" effect? Great video presentation - a fascinating interview. The Beatles career was marked by so much progression - as musicians, artists, songwriters, and of course, this is mirrored in terms of the production techniques through their 8-year recording career.

What is his thinking about nowadays virtual recreations of analog equipment? Have he tried to recreate from his knowledge Beatles iconic songs using virtual plugins? BTW: Amazing interview Dr.
Hi Renato - I love a LOT of the vintage emulations. The quality is amazing. I use many of the Waves Abbey Road tools on my mixes, but not to recreate Beatles tracks, instead to create new music! Thanks for watching!

Here's my question. What reference monitors did Abby Road Studio use?
The monitors were primarily Altec 605As in Altec 612 cabinets with EMI RS141 Leak TL/25 Plus Amplifiers. Later, Tannoy “Gold” speakers with Lockwood cabinets, EMI RS141 Leak TL/25 Plus Amplifiers.

The mixing console used at Abbey Road during the Beatles' era ended up in Caribou Ranch in Colorado about 10 years later, eventually being donated to the music studio at the University of Colorado - Denver. I had the opportunity to help a friend record on that console about 15 years ago. It was a thrill!

@@thebeatlesrecordingreferen8667 Now that I've looked into it, I believe it was the EMI12345, but the console I remember had white rotary knobs on the pots instead of the black as I've seen in pictures. I still remember the click on those knob when you changed the levels on them.

Please please me was recorded in Mono and Stereo from the start so the guy in Canada is wrong. It was not the Beatles choice, it was George Martin's, hence the extreme high value of theoriginal Stereo Please Please me album.
George Martin was the engineer and creative mind behind the Beatles. George discovered the Beatles and used the band as a canvas for his creative audio sketches. It was George Martin that engineered and invented many effects that are even used today. There is not nor will there ever be anyone with the same abilities as George Martin. He is the Einstein of Music production & engineering.
Geoff Emerick did just as much or more to get those sounds
Martin as producer rarely worked the console, but he certainly knew how to use the studio to create new sounds. He had the help of gifted recording and balance engineers at EMI. THanks for watching!
The creative mind behind the Beatles, wow! I respect George Martin greatly for his work with the Beatles, he may even have been crucial for their success and development. And yes, it is good to realize that more people were involved than just the fab four. But now let's not turn it around.. the four themselves brought the musical creativity.
@@thebeatlesrecordingreferen8667 Yes and No. G. Martin in the beginning controlled all aspects for recording and sound engineering. Martin originally produced comedic animated albums with lots of sound effects with the likes of Peter Sellers and others. At the time Martin was the best sound effects engineer in the UK. Later on at EMI he wasn't doing the grunt work like splicing 2" tape on the Studer's or running snakes or adjusting levels on the console. He directed others at EMI to do it. Martin directed EMI to provide preferred studio staff, equipment spec, and even the type of tape. Also, if it wasn't for the hit single Martin produced for Matt Monro, Epstein would never have approached him about the Beatles. It was Martin that convinced EMI to sign the Beatles. The Beatles played loose and Ringo's timing was bad. Martin used the Beatles as a canvas for experimenting with really wacky sound effects no one else was using at the time.
George Martin was not their engineer. He was their producer. He and the Beatles (and mostly the Beatles) would ask for certain sounds and the engineers would work the equipment to get such sounds. The Beatles were the primary visionaries behind those sounds and the engineers executed them. George Martin, along with the engineers such as Geoff Emerick, helped the Beatles realize their ideas. George Martin did not mic Paul's bass amp with a speaker driver to achieve a bigger bass sound for Paperback Writer - Geoff Emerick was the one who decided to do that and he got in trouble for it because he didn't match the impedance correctly. George Martin did not instruct Geoff Emerick to close-mic Ringo's drums. He did that on his own, and again, got in trouble for it. That is how it's always been told by the people who worked on the albums.
