I have been watching this band live for 20 years and I have always noticed the technique he does where he pushes his tongue out against the side of his mouth. It was always such a unique thing to me and produces some real grimy sounds that always served them well with their old school material that leaned more towards grind. Album of the year.

(and your facial expressions on filthy breakdowns and brutal voices are so natural and fun to watch😄) Solid work as always 🤘🤘 keep doin great work.
I remember using the singing goblin type voice (albeit in an unhealthy way im sure), in an old band I was in. But more for accents and background layers, dont think id ever do a whole section with it like Cattle does, mainly for the reason you gave. One thing from Travis I DO like to use sometimes is trying to Scream or Growl in key and bend the note up or down. He did that a bit in Anthropocene and its a cool sound that isnt so, like, blatantly Travis when used.
That hissing high is cool. My personal favorite way to hit highs is your tip for nasally "aye" or "ah i see" track positioning. Lines everything up perfectly for me.
Joke aside, I came just to see you react on the other-wordly singing section, but ended up watching the whole video which was very interesting, even for a non-singer. Cheers for frrrrrance !
Travis is a university professor of metal vocals :) One of the most respected vocalists! Would love to see their classic songs on this channel as well, like "to serve a man"! Also "Mammals in Babylon" and "Pacific Grim" are the outsdanting ones for me.
When I saw this video the other day I was hoping You and Charismatic Voice would react to it. I've listened to the album a couple of times and there are definitely some good songs on it, not sure it beats Death Atlas but good stuff. And I'm sitting here watching TH-cam instead of seeing them in Charlotte tonight, it sold out before I could get tickets
I really liked your discussion about inhabiting a sort of character when performing (certainly as a vocalist, though I think instrumentalists can inhabit characters as well during a performance). I think I mentioned this in other videos, but I come from a classical singing background, and what I was always taught was how inhabiting a character--or at least a mood--is the final step to taking your song from competent, to an actual performance that will impact whoever listens. My two favorite quotes regarding (especially) singing performance is "singing is acting on pitch" (said by a BYU professor--can't remember his name) and "it's all about the drama," said by German operatic bass, René Pape. Those two quotes work so well in tandem. This is why our favorite [metal] performers usually put such visual aggression into their performance, because otherwise the sounds wouldn't match the visuals, and we humans expect those two elements to match at least somewhat convincingly. Lastly--regarding this topic--absolutely master the fundamentals, but after that, it's amazing how very little you have to think about technique while inhabiting a character/mood. I still remember a coaching lesson I had where while I was singing a song, my coach would hold up random cards with one-word emotions written on them (e.g. angry, frightened, etc), and we were both surprised to discover that my technique issues that I was obsessing over at the time just melted into what was a really good performance. I think any musician can benefit from this realization. Just real quick--I could be wrong about this, but--I think during those "sung" sections in Cattle Decap's songs have a layer of completely clean vocals, likely made with a head voice/falsetto/mix tone, and then he layers distortion onto that sound as he feels is appropriate. And it could very well be that one of those layers includes that singing with some distortion. Anyway, great analysis as always. Thanks, Mark!
those absolutely PERFECT “doubles”. At first, it sounded like at least three layers of vocals, but the more I pay attention, I think it is just perfect harmonies with singular notes played on the GUITAR. I can’t tell now.
Good point about the acting and being in character. Metal is THE most theatrical genre of all time if you ask me. Part of why we all love it i'm assuming.
Great advice on the acting with vocals. It’s something that a lot of people don’t think about because they are focused on the best show of their technique. You are screaming, don’t be afraid to look and sound absolute insane lmao 😂
Travis proves again why he’s the GOAT! I hope you can get a chance to react to Scourge of the Offspring. It’s such a great track. I also love that when a lot of vocalists started to mimic a style he’d been doing for years he just came up with another unique style of vocals.
This album is certainly on par with Death Atlas, and I wasn't sure they'd be able to do that. It'd be foolish to think anyone can top their Magnus opus and CD did it in the best way; Terrasite is fucking incredible!
1:07 It is a long fucking road. Great news, by the way! I commented a couple months ago about losing my voice to some horrible mix of car wash overspray, drain cleaner fumes, and really bad allergies. Just wanted to say I'm at about 95% now (gonna take the L on that other 5%), can do my mids again, which I'd kind of lost while pushing my boundaries and practicing what Travis does. So now I have that all added to my arsenal, and can transition in and out of those deep gutturals and epiglottal (which I can do pretty loudly and I think it's fucking dope!), to the nasty wet soft pallet sounds, back into the more mid-range Jens Kidman and velociraptor/jaguar/tie-fighter Randal Blythe impersonation that I've done for years. I think that month and a half or so of not vocalizing did a lot of good to just reset the muscle groups and let everything start to mesh together. Keep rocking dude, love this channel, and love what you and The Charismatic Voice do! I have learned SOOOO MUCH from you two for the last three or so years. Much love!
14:20 Fun fact, my cousin (who I might be starting a project with soon) and I have an upstairs neighbor, and that's our knock to let us all know it's one of us at the door. Cattle Decap is the best at it right now. There is a lot of good metal right now. But The only band that comes to mind if someone put a gun to my head and said, who is the best metal band right now, it's them.
("Sorry" for the length of the message) 1- I'd lie if I say I'm a big fan of the new album, while I've been a HUGE CD fan since Harvest Floor. Mainly because I feel like almost all the songs follow the same formula. Plus, while still heavy, to me it feels like they keep going more accessible and it worries me. But I agree this song is the best from Terrasite and it's excellent. It also gets away from the redundant formula I just spoke about and has that great unpredictability I love in Cattle and miss in this release. About Travis, it's easy to see he is always more and more in control and confidence with his "goblin" voice, but to me it's now too singing and clean, where it's the part you seem to love the most. I rather have it more brutal and more raw like on Monolith (My fav' from them) and even A. Extinction. 2- While Ryan is my favorite active extreme metal vocalist by far, in basically every live videos I've seen he sounds terrible! I KNOW videos with cellphones don't give the true idea, but when I listen for example to my favorite death metal vocalist ever, Mickael Akerfeldt from Opeth (!!) I can still recognize how amazing he is at vocals on live videos, even if not nearly as good as what I experienced seeing them live twice. I really hope Travis sounds MUCH better live than on those videos and also that I'll get to witness it myself :P 3- I also adore his narration at the end here, including the lyrics. Then the lighting, angles, fake blood, contact lenses all of that part of the video is perfect to me. I'm a die-hard horror movie fan and all of this, along with the lyrics of the song, make me think so much of one of my all time favorite horror movie called The Descent, where monsters that are blind because they have lived for too long in total dark in a cave, feed off human beings... 4- Your videos are about singers so I won't go deep into this point because of that, but their drummer doesn't get nearly the love and recognition he deserves. He is awesome! I'd even say to me he is the "mvp" of Terrasite.
I'm such a sucker for theatrics in metal vocals. The first Enfold Darkness album is such a blast because of how ridiculous and sing songy the vocal patterns are. They were totally Cradle of Filth worship back then but it was sick.
Plz plz plz do a reaction to Eden Adversary-Lords of Gehenna! It's so insane vocally and I very much want to hear what you would have to say about it vocal wise
I never thought my impressions of Cartman and warcraft 3 peons would come in handy one day 😂. Work work. Why you keep poking me?. Poke poke poke is that all you do?

2- While Ryan is my favorite active extreme metal vocalist by far, in basically every live videos I've seen he sounds terrible! I KNOW videos with cellphones don't give the true idea, but when I listen for example to my favorite death metal vocalist ever, Mickael Akerfeldt from Opeth (!!) I can still recognize how amazing he is at vocals on live videos, even if not nearly as good as what I experienced seeing them live twice. I really hope Travis sounds MUCH better live than on those videos and also that I'll get to witness it myself :P
3- I also adore his narration at the end here, including the lyrics.
E-courses are a great idea for vocalists that are too shy and/or socially anxious to do 1 on 1 lessons.
Or want to learn at their own pace!
🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥
Amon Amarth?
Millennial pause
I embraced the dark side long ago
😂 Good luck even coming back to close to the vocals of the 🐐
Rolling R's while screaming is incredibly hard for me lol i can only sound like a hissing cat with bronchitis
Ngl that sounds like it could sound pretty sick too
back in the day Id say Barnes, Benton and Lord Worm were the the greatest death metaL vocalists... then came Travis. he changed everything
Mark, please check out the new Make Them Suffer - Ghost Of Me 🙂
Started 3 min ago. Fucking score!
18:25 He was possessed by the spirit of Jack Black
10:45 so do your best megadeth impression before doing them harsh
I'm such a sucker for theatrics in metal vocals. The first Enfold Darkness album is such a blast because of how ridiculous and sing songy the vocal patterns are. They were totally Cradle of Filth worship back then but it was sick.
@6:10 "let's hear these high vocals because they're going to be sick as farts" ????
Plz plz plz do a reaction to Eden Adversary-Lords of Gehenna! It's so insane vocally and I very much want to hear what you would have to say about it vocal wise
This new Album is the shit! ❤
Hell yeah!
Cattle Decapitation - Scourge of the Offspring other great song
Now I picture Travis as the orc peons.
father lucifer your light still casts a shadow In there emptiness we hide behind its veil ❤
I never thought my impressions of Cartman and warcraft 3 peons would come in handy one day 😂. Work work.
Why you keep poking me?. Poke poke poke is that all you do?
*Steeples fingers* " good good..."
I think the cleans are still silly but that's just me
The key to being a good vocalist is a BIG BUCKET OF WATER
