    More than ten years ago I had a very nice acoustic guitar made by TH Davis. No one in my area wanted to give me more than $500 and I knew it was way more valuable than that. I sent an email with pictures to Gruhn guitars having no idea who they were to inquire about their consignment sales policy. It was a fantastic experience. Mr Gruhn came down in the main shop to give me the history lesson on the guitar. They did charge a small fee for repair but I walked away with around $2300 and guitar is now in the hands of a professional blue grass picker.

    I put down the pick after reading the Hubert Sumlin tell the story of trying out for Howlin Wolf and Wolf telling him to come back when he could play with his fingers. “...I started playing with a lot more soul. I never used a pick again - that was my secret to unlocking everything. My tone, my sound, everything happened right then.”

    I’ve sold tons of guitars on my own and never considered consignment until the pandemic hit in March last year. I was selling some Gibson custom shop guitars and really needed the money at the time. I could not afford dealing with a picky customer, potential shipping damage, or a return. I let the shop deal with all of that, and I got my money. I paid 25% for piece of mind.

    I worked at a 2nd-hand store for almost 16 years, where besides deliveries I was their guitar guy when people wanted to sell. While we didn't do consignments I ran into the same issues:
    -People that want waaaaay too much.
    -They think their guitar is something it's not, like rare or in good shape, and "Squire by Fender" is not a Fender.
    I'd have to politely remind them that:
    -No one was forcing them to sell it. If they can get more elsewhere, more power to them. but if they could they wouldn't be there talking with me.
    -We're not a charity. Yeah, we're going to sell it for way more than we bought if for. That $1 burger at McD's costs them $.30.
    Oh, the stories I could tell about the people trying to con us out of money...

    On a related note. I made a COVID purchase of a Gibson 335 (2019) model for $2200. It's in MINT condition. I see them going for around $3000. Do I dump it on the market? I love the guitar, but it's one of those that I'm almost afraid to play so I don't play it as much. I don't want to mess it up. Thinking of going with a PRS CE 24 instead and keeping the cash. I know there is no right answer. Just looking to see if you had an opinion. I think that would be a great topic to discuss too! (Buy a cheaper guitar that you play more and aren't afraid to mess up or get the holy grail guitar but never take it out). Love listening to you guys. Best videos on TH-cam now.

    "40%-50%" ?! Consignment rates around my area are 20% while one is 15% but further away. Remember for the store: they have no cash investment tied up in the consigned guitar like they would ordering stock from the factory. Sellers: Look up 'actual sold' on ebay/reverb and price near the low end of that range so the consignments move, then the store % comes out of that number.

  • @tomdyll2728
    @tomdyll2728 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Consignment at 20-40% is for people who don't know anything about their items and are terrible with their money. I would hope anyone watching this is smart enough to never go that route. Then turning around and spending the money in the same guitar shop probably means you lost more money. Really good advice is that the Internet has equalized the seller market. Clean it up, tune it, take great pics and sell it yourself without letting anyone take a cut.

    Great advice guys. I have consigned a number of guitars. Key for the seller is to be realistic. I also found that the shop would come off their percentage to make the sale if they knew I would buy something else or the purchaser of my consigned guitar was going to want new strings, mods or a different setup. The consigner needs to take virtual mental partnership of the shop and help move the sale along.

  • @frederickthompson8686
    @frederickthompson8686 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good advice. Especially, if you want to "invest" the sales proceeds into new gear being sold by the consignor. If not, I think Reverb can work. Recently, I needed to thin a collection that was taking up too much space and used Reverb. My guitars were vintage Martins and a "vintage" PRS. Reverb provided a fantastic service. The other issue is price. Most sellers overprice their guitars by a huge margin. But you guys are right... the delta between ask and sold is usually huge!

    A good topic, and one I was hoping that you’d touch on, is sellers understanding gear condition and the pricing expectations based on that.
    I’m seeing a lot of guitars in really rough shape (not relic’d) being sold as “great” or even excellent condition and asking top dollar.
    I think maybe people don’t understand how to properly rate the condition of their gear; guitars, pedals, amps and all.
    Used strings prices are the worst.

    I had this experience a long time ago (1998) when I took a '66 Riviera 12 string to 30th Street Guitars in NYC to sell on consignment...The shop owner pulled out the blue book (remember that?) and told me what the guitar was "worth"...I disagreed....We haggled a bit and then he said "I can do better for you if you trade it for something already in the store"...So I did...Gave him the Epi and 1K in cash and left with a mint '82 30th Anniversary Goldtop with Tim Shaws - one of the last Kalamazoo LPs ever built - that I still own and love 23 years later...
    Btw, as I recall the going rate on consignments back then was 10-15%...

    @deveroe79 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I've never been a fan of the flat percentage fee for consignment. At 30%, selling a $300 guitar will net the store $90. Whereas selling a 3k guitar will net the store $900. I wouldn't bemoan a store making more on the more expensive piece but there certainly isn't $810 more in work that goes with selling the more expensive guitar.

  • @kcbluemoon

    In your opinion, is it cool to discuss the Golden Ticket scenario ahead of time with the shop when deciding on percentages? I have a nice acoustic piece that should get roughly $4k. I don’t need to sell it right away but definitely would (just not the right fit for me kind of thing) if I could turn the funds into a new purchase. My local shop usually has great inventory so I’d be comfortable committing to a purchase with them.

    After not owning any musical instrument for over a decade I guess due to a shocking amount of money worth of gear had been stolen when they drove off with it in a U-Haul. Guitars a base drums, a DX7 and another synth recording equipment and a really nice PA system well a soul sucking amount of gear. No it wasn't insured. While living in Maryland I stumbled into Appalachian Blue Grass and they introduced me to Taylor guitars for the first time. I knew I wanted to replace my 12 string if nothing else. After several visits and playing several X55's the salesman handed me a 855 when I'd asked if he had a 755 which was really stretching my budget at the time. I'd played everything below the 7 by then. I told him it was really too much money. He by then knew what I was looking for in the sound and the way it played the tone etc. He said just play it.
    There I was in 1999 playing this Cannon that played mids and highs and wasn't too bassy they way I find Martins for what I play and write. He explained it was a 1995, and was owned by an airline pilot who wanted to upgrade. It looked like it had been kept in a closet since new. Taken out once a week dusted off and put back in the case then back in the closet. It was about 1/2 the money of what a new 855 would have been. It's upstairs in my studio now. No I take that back it's downstairs in the living room. I was showing off the ToneWoodAmp I recently installed. Those really are a lot of fun I really love that guitar and it was a great experience. And I found and got my soul back by walking out with it that day.

    Good subject. Thats how I do it. I can charge outrageous amounts for my custom bodied guitars and I never worry about if they will sell. Once a player plugs them in its all over but the fight with the wife. I figured out a long time ago that I can build my guitars and handle it like art through shop consignment. My guitars always create a stir and do draw in more business for my shop guys and we always walk away smiling. I have the record at over 10,000 views on Google's maps. Look up Jefferson County Music in Missouri. Look at the pics. I'm the Sustain King but it's just therapy for my Lex Luther brain. It ain't about money for me. I don't make no money but I do get to stick it to the man. 😃🤣😂😁⚡

    Whenever I go to sell something, rare as it is, I always check eBay and Reverbs sold listings to see what they are actually bringing. Obviously I'd like to make some $ on it, but if I can break even after fees and shipping I'm usually good with that. Typically if I'm selling it means I'm eyeing another piece of gear to buy

    I'm gonna second the take store credit thing. There is a small shop locally here that I consigned a few guitars I wasn't playing anymore with. Everytime I went in there he had a LP custom that I would play even tho I wasn't buying it lol. After about two weeks after I left my guitars with him (I was looking at about $3200 if everything sold for what he thought it would) he calls me to come into the shop. I show up on a Saturday and.......my guitars are still on the wall. I figured it was a bad call and for some reason he was gonna tell me he couldn't sell them. When we start talking he hands me my favorite les LP custom that I'm never gonna buy and as we start talking as I'm sitting there noodling around unplugged he tells me he can go back to his office and cut me a check or I can take the LP home.....I was shocked! I think he wanted 4k for it and obviously I took him up on it so I would say take that store credit and see what you can take home. If you don't need the cash you can probably do much better with store credit.

    I have a major problem with consignment stores! (please read my whole comment). There’s no way that a music store on a new instrument they make 30 to 40% but on the used market consignment you will charge your local person 30 to 40% to sell something, this is major wrong practice.

      When I used to work in MI retail we made between 15-30% on guitars. On average it was probably was low 20's. You're right, it's absurd some stores enjoy higher magins on consignment pi.ces that they have nothing into. The new stuff they actually have to pay for and wait for it to sell. So I don't get it either.

This is why the insurance industry relies on tools like AutoSource that take the average of "Actual" sales to give a some what reliable value for cars that are totaled. Everyone for some reason thinks that their stuff is worth more than it is.

I don't know what you do for a living but in business I one heard, hey I was the cheapest guy in town before I went bankrupt...... you have to value your services ... sorry for the rant but they are worth it ...

      @@tomeasley3538 I do understand your justification. I own a retail business too. But a dealer doesn't have to BUY a consigned guitar. It's like free inventory. Around my area the average is 20% and sometimes 15 for five figure guitars. If a owner wants to much the store politely declined to hang the guitar. If the price is fair the guitar will sell fast and it cost the dealer nothing but a few minutes to test and enter the thing into their system then they get money without any capital expense. I have a $15k slabboard strat hanging at my local shop. 20% fee and the retail price is fair. Dealer gets to make 3k with no outlay. Or he could buy 6-8 strats for $7k and have his money and hooks tied up until he sold them ALL to make the same money. If I was willing to give up five grand (33%) I could just drive to one of several shops and they would write me a check on the spot.

    As I was listening to this I plugged in the serial number of my Fender strat and realized it was a Fender Deluxe Players model but without the cheesy gold hardware, pleasant surprise. Just sayin..🤘🏼

    #nopicklentansacrifice is what you are going for if you're going to suck in us Catholics. Being a rock guy, that's a no go for me, sorry. I went with sugar in my coffee.
