The first guitar I ever touched was a single pickup one of these belonging to my old man. I used to pretend it was a battle axe when I was a kid.
Thirty something years later I still have it, still love it, and still play it :)

WOW!!! Bought one of these from Woolworths in 1973, was a single pickup version, £12.50p, the twin pickup was outa reach at £15, was only on £12a week! The pickups are amazing! Seen them put into telecasters, if you go on the teisco website you can get the delray logo for about £15, loved this video....

Oh my! I haven’t seen one of those since I was 14 years old! (I’m 52 now) this was the very first electric guitar I ever got when I started playing. My mother bought it for me. She found it at a garage sale for 50 bucks. They didn’t know what hey had. Neither did I because I eventually sold it to buy a Strat. I sure wish I had it now.

Had one as a kid - think more 1973/4 - bought off a Kay’s Catalogue - £78 0ver a year rings a bell 😀😀 loved it and last month bought another - 260 quid 😀- must be 3/4 the size and half the weight of a Strat but couldn’t remember that - think the tremolo arm on yours either much earlier model - later versions? A flatter chrome bar - Enjoy

awesome jamming there...in 1970 ..i got From Woolworths the Teisco branded one t hink ?..two pickups .cant for the life of me remember the whammy on it though ,hmmm ..yup was £12.99 or there abouts..same sunburst.. so refreshing to here different tones ..we get bombarded with strat and gibson pickups etc .that we forget there are imense tones to be had from lesser brands....but at the end of the day ...you have the gift to make any guitar sound F.A.B .....rock on Dave...peace.

Dave....maaan...you are blowing me away with your playing, skills and this fantastic late-60s Teisco/Kawai!!! I just recently caught the Teisco/Kawai disease in my fifties after decades of lefty Pauls and lefty Strats... so damned surprised how great these "long-ago-deemed-poopy" pickups sound. The second of now five (in two months) Teisco (Kawai) guitars is an EG-413-3T 3-pup righty with vibrato arm from approx 1969-1972 (same era as yours) and it is kick arse!!! The zero fret made it easy to turn around the nut/string-guide for lefty play! Running it through my L6 Helix and it's stoopidly cool!!! I may well re-fret it myself as it is worth it for sure :)

Super nice. I've owned a lot of similar guitars, Kays, Harmonys, Silvertones. They all have so much more unique and interesting sounding pickups than modern guitars. And I honestly don't know why zero frets aren't on every single guitar ever made. They just make so much sense and I can't think of a single downside to them... :)

Dave... you are an absolute joy to watch, you play incredibly well and your enthusiasm and passion is infectious, I’ve watched this particular video around 5 times already. The Teisco sounds outrageous and I came across your video because I’m looking for one and searched for reviews etc. I am actually looking at a similar Jedson telecaster style with the same dual pickups etc. Have you seen or played a Jedson, apparently they are the same as the Teisco, Kay and Audition guitars pretty much. I am definitely buying either a Teisco or a Jedson and your video has inspired me even more. Thanks, you are a breath of fresh air and so funny too. Cheers mate. Stay safe! 🙏🏻🎸

Dave, found this info regarding Teisco guitars on Reverb-
    Kawai
Kawais are probably most often mistaken for Teiscos because Kawai bought the Teisco brand name in 1967 and continued to make familiar Teisco guitars, while adding new models every year. Though sometimes sharing some similar looks, Kawai guitars tend to be a bit inferior to original Teisco guitars, especially when it comes to the wiring and pickups.
There is one good way to distinguish a Kawai (or a Kawai-era Teisco) from an original Teisco: look for a string bar on the headstock. Kawai used this feature on a majority of its solid bodies, while original Teisco guitars never used string bars and instead favoured pitched headstocks.

This sludgy, low fidelity tone reminds me so much of the English blues rock records of the the 60s and 70s. Savoy Brown (Kim Simmonds), Ten Years After, pre-pop rock Stevie Nicks & Buckingham Fleetwood Mac, etc. Also the American blues rock of the time, Johnny Winter, early ZZ Top. To me it sounds less Led Zeppelin and more Deram Records. They never paid much to get their stable of artists recorded and the results were often low fidelity, fuzzy, bad ass sounding records.
It's amazing how close your tone is to those records. Honestly you blow most of those classic players out of the water. Isn't that amazing? I think people forget while making the "greatest players ever" list that players like yourself have kept the art form evolving. I have always maintained that there's about a thousand dudes nobody has ever heard of out there that can probably beat the breaks off those "10 best guitarists ever" lists. I realize there's many factors to that, such as their social/cultural impact and how many records their respective groups sold, but measure for measure you're right up there with some of the best I've ever heard in my life. I don't mean to worship at your alter TOO much lol, but if your playing is something to behold.

Great mother of Godzilla! This is the last thing I expected to see today.
That is a variant of the first guitar I ever owned, bought when I was a youngster in 1972. For $42.
It came with a "Prestige" badge, instead of "Teisco," and had a slightly different body shape, with a longer lower horn, more Mosrite than Strat. It had 4 pickups and a bizarre bridge comprised of a threaded crossbar and roller saddles. The vibrato was sort of a Bigsby thing, but instead of an axle, the pivot worked like a door hinge and it would go out of tune if you just breathed on it. I'm surprised yours is so stable.
You can see a picture of it here:

Dave, this is weird. I had just watched a video by a guy named Gavin Lazarus before I started watching yours, and he had a guitar that if it isn't the one you have it would really be freaky! I just noticed your video is from 5 years ago, his was from 3 years ago, but it is the same model, in great condition, and it's missing the Teisco headstock emblem! I hope you read this if you're not already aware of the situation. I had one of the one single coil models in the Tulip series I got from a membership warehouse store called Gemco in the States around late 70's. I think I paid around $29USD. Peace

@@thedavesimpson I managed to transform a jazzmaster pickup in this one's width and trying to get as close as possible.
You think it could it be done with some audio transformations/effects ?
I was thinking about EQ cutting the proximity effect region (~200 Hz).
Also, since they're microphonic do they have a proximity effect similar to cardioid microphones ?

The radius of the pick-ups is tighter than the fret board. I raised mine as high as I dared and adjusted out the pole peices on the outer 4 poles of each pick-up. It helped a lot. Given than most folk never have their amps up full, means you have scope to turn it up. I think the trade off between lower output and great tone is worth it.

Those cheapo old guitars are great for slide! I read that Ry Cooder takes the pick ups off tiasko guitars an puts them on his gigging guitars. Cheap pickups but sound dirty an good for slide. Hound dog taylor played a cheap japanese guitar too. 😎🎸

DAVE! I've got this exact guitar (at my Dad's). I've worked on it and worked on it and I can't get a low action and I'm afraid I'm going to snap the truss if I tighten it any more. I think I've put 9's on it. It's playable but not amazing. Any advice on that or should it be high? (Edit: Just got to the part about re-fretting. Yeah - it probably needs re-fretting at this point).
It does, however, have the original trem-arm on it. Love the trem on this guitar, seriously good.
