I'm pretty sure this song is more about Jack rather than John. Jack is the last member of the gang, he found his father's corpse and probably had to bury him himself since he wouldn't let Abigail do it. Jack ends up using John guns to revenge him, killing Ross, that's why the name "deadman's gun".
