@@Kyasutaa that part of the video was partially based off of schaffrillas productions mulan 2020 review, in which he talks about a different movie that’s also pretty different in nature to have something the audience can watch afterwards it’s the same thing here, it wasn’t supposed to be a meaningful comparison, just a game that came out around the same time that people can play that’s actually good… i understand they are vastly different and comparing them wasn’t the point lol also wdym by “bad opinion” what are you describing there
I agree DDLC is pretty shallow and overrated, and it's even more mid when compared to Kimi to Kanojo to Kanojo no Koi, a visual novel which came out before DDLC and did basically the same thing, but a lot better, in a more creative and developed way. I used to think DDLC is incredible, but after reading Totono it everything about DDLC seemed like a weak rip-off. Now, I'm not sure if Dan Salvato knew about this vn, but it's really difficult to believe that the similarities between the two are a coincidence. However, it's important to note that Totono is an eroge (well, the Steam version cuts out the h-scenes but I don't know if it's that good, since they are actually meaningful to the story), but the meta elements really are great in my opinion. It's also worth mentioning that the game is best enjoyed when you're familiar with the visual novel genre since it deconstructs it, it's a lot heavier and longer than DDLC, and has more focus on romance rather than horror
This will be a long response that I will tell as I bring up most parts of this video so bear with me.. When I first saw the video I was at first defensive when it comes to someone with a conflicting opinion over a certain game that I was blinded to think was one of the best written games of when it came out, but when I watched most of the video and read most of the dialogue you’ve pointed out, I slowly and slowly thought more and more less of the game and how I view it when it comes to its story and script and how much it doesn’t make any sense, this can be compared to another over popular story-driven copyright that’s Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel, mainly due to people hyping it up like there’s no tomorrow even though it has the most confusing writing bending over for the characters that’s supposed to be sympathetic, but end up failing miserably due to that said character being batshit insane when it actually comes to their actions- (AKA Stolas and Angel Dust) -and not wanting to face the actions THEY’VE done themselves. Same goes with Monika, in my eyes when I first played DDLC when I was your age during 2020, I thought she was a misunderstood character, but when I saw most of her excuses of her explaining watching you develop a connection with the other girls was torture, meanwhile she had the ability to delete them right at the fucking start, as well as not being the most smartest character the game is making here out to be as she is completely aware of her own file existing meanwhile not keeping it hidden as well giving obvious signs of it being deleted is possible for the player to do, and then having to put the MC through this nightmare that be through gore and bloodshed and unnecessary body horror even though she had the ability to delete them at the start of the game right then and there. When it also comes to characters like Sayori due to the writing of the main story, it’s hard to feel sympathetic with her due to her not showing any signs of being depressed before she confesses that she did indeed, all these years, has had it. Even though no one is that dedicated to hiding it for so long which is near impossible to do with almost no one noticing it for so long. As well as the main story of the game not helping her show a precise representation of someone who is depressed or has suicidal thoughts, cause regardless of what happens, she just kills herself anyways even if she gets what she wants if you do end up accepting her confession, or if you don’t. Due to her not wanting any form of attention even though she does by wanting to be with the MC?? I felt like I wanted to bond with Sayori and relate with her cause what she was going through is what I was and still am going through with not wanting to be appreciated or wanted to be cared about due to my self worth just being dead and dug deep into the ground, but on the other hand it’s hard to feel for her because right when you feel like you’ll have a more deeper connection with her regardless if you accept her confession or not she’ll just kill herself anyways, due to the choices of the story and game not mattering and just killing her off to scare the player and just move on that be the second phase of the game. From what I’ve been going through when it comes to my own self worth, and seeing Dan Salvato’s depiction of Sayori as a representation as a character that has depression and has suicidal thoughts offended me due to whatever the people around you do or say, you’ll just kill yourself anyways, and her killing herself was just a plot point and a way to creep out the player, not intending on making you have a more deeper connection with her as a character due to her stubbornness of trying to be a better character when it comes to your decisions, and Dan not having the time and thought to completely rewrite the story and game elements and story changing decisions, shows a lot of how he already thinks of his story and not wanting to rewrite it to be less of just girls killing themselves and sharing unnecessary trauma and abuse as shock value to give off a quick scare. This also applies with other people that deal with stuff that Natsuki and Yuri have gone through being highly offensive to the people who have had to go though this just to either make the game creepy or try to scare the audience. (Do keep in mind I haven’t seen all of the video, but I just wanted to point out some criticisms you’ve brought of most of the characters of the main story of the game, thank you!)
