You have NO IDEA what it was like to listen to the radio back in late 1977. I swear this song played every half hour of every day for months! It was the only song to spend double digits at #1 in the 70's, and was the UNDISPUTED #1 song of the entire 70's decade. So many people hate it, but there are a bunch of us who still listen to this proudly with our windows wide open. 😎
I was 10 and I remember. I like the song, but some people put it right up there with "Feelings" as one of those 70's songs they love to hate.
I loved this song even though it played on the radio ad nauseum. The other choices then was disco and hard rock. If you liked this song I guess you weren’t part of the in crowd. ( I was not part of the “in” crowd)
@@jgweems I was 5 & turned 6 when it was still #1, and I remember very well how HUGE it was. I don't know why so many people hate it, but then again, I don't know why people don't like disco. It was a neat form of dance with superb production.
@@marilyn4917 I listened to all hit music, all styles. These ballads, classic rock, disco........ all great! I was raised on Casey Kasem's American Top 40, so I have my parents to thank for my great taste in music.
I won't lie, the song is pretty syrupy. I think most people who don't like the song do so because it just got overplayed. Which is a fair point. Hearing now, decades after the last time I heard it, I can say that I'm no longer part of the DBoone's hater's club. :)
In the late 70s, you could not get away from this song. It played EVERYWHERE. It spent a whopping TEN weeks at #1 in the heart of the disco era. Imagine doing that with your VERY FIRST SINGLE. Though Debby had several other country hits, she never came close to having another song with as much crossover appeal as this one. If you want to explore her more country side, try "My Heart Has a Mind of Its Own" or "Breakin' In a Brand New Broken Heart" or "Are you On the Road to Lovin' Me Again". Her father, Pat Boone had a TON of hits in the 50s and 60s (though most of the biggest were covers).

Debby might have been a one hit wonder in the pop realm but she had a short but very successful career in contemporary Christian music. Her debut Christian album, With My Song won a Grammy, the duet with Phil Driscoll ( from her second album) “Keep the Flame Burning” also won a Grammy. She then turned out a vibrant Christian dance album “Choose Life” with producer Michael Omartian which I believe was nominated for a Grammy. She came out with a couple more Christian albums, a lovely Christmas album, a tribute album to Rosemary Clooney (her mom in law) and most recently, a jazz album (Swing This). I love her voice and feel she’s an awesome underrated artist.
I've always, always thought of this as a religious song. Debby's dad, Pat Boone, was a teen idol in the late 50s/early 60s and was always very forthcoming about his religious convictions. Daughter Debby went so far as to admit she interpreted this song to be about God, even though the songwriter (Joe Brooks) meant the lyrics in a secular way. The song was turned into a movie; not sure which came first. It's hard to explain just how big a hit this song was back in 1977, a year of disco and Saturday Night Fever. Beyond the world of music, Star Wars was everywhere. Then this little unassuming song came in and just took over every thing.
This song was a cover. The original was just as good but barely got noticed. The main difference was just the packaging, with "Boone" having name recognition.
I think Debby even *said* that this was about Jesus.
Even though I am also a Christian, I've always had a difficult time believing that this song was anything more than just a secular romantic song. I always suspected that she probably bowed to the peer-pressure of her Christian Audience by saying it was about God.
@@stevejoshua9536 Todd in the Shadows did a wonderful video on this song as part of his One Hit Wonderland series. His take was that being as squeaky-clean as she was, it was believable that she was talking about Jesus, however, anything is possible behind closed doors.
The song and movie were done together. I've put more detail in a post above, but the reason the songwriter brought Debby Boone in is that he didn't want to pay or credit the singer who did the soundtrack for the film. Debby was forced by him, however, to mimic the film's singer, Kasey Cisyk's every vocal inflection. She had no freedom. Thus, it was genuinely her vision of the song as inspirational rather than romantic that gave her performance such beauty and power. There is no question in my mind that she was very genuine in making that statement. She definitely poured her whole soul into it whereas she had no control over the style.
Probably haven’t heard this in over 40 years, but can still sing along with it. They played this so much when it came out.

Omgosh. You couldn't get away from this song when it first hit the radio!! It was on the charts for forever. Wow, I haven't heard this for a long time.

I remember all to well because at like 11 years old I was given the 45 and asked to learn the song for solo at church. Thankfully I did a great job.

This song was huge, definitely one of the biggest songs at the time. It was on every radio station around the clock it seemed, and everybody wanted Debbie Boone to appear on their TV show, which she often did. Beautiful song, beautifully sung, beautiful lady, it couldn't fail!
Even though the song was intended as a love song, Boone interpreted “You Light Up My Life” as an inspirational song about God.
Her Christian album 'Surrender' is very good.

It played so many times on the radio, you knew the words wether you wanted to or not. So many years later I still know many of the words.

I was 9 in 1977, and every girl I knew from 9 to 19 was running around singing this song aloud when it was not being played on the radio, which was almost every half-hour. Debbie Boone and Barry Manilow brought soft FM radio to the masses on the top 40 back then. Wonderful memories.

Leann Rimes did an awesome cover of the song in 1997, that was largely ignored by radio. It was the 7th most popular song of the year 1977 worldwide, and was the theme song for the Movie of the same name starring Didi Conn.
I'm with others, it was INESCAPABLE. You couldn't hide from this song in '77/'78. I can't believe I just voluntarily listened to it again but that's how much I love ya'll haha I know errrrrrything note of this song. Any one of us here can probably sing it (dramatically!), even after 40+ years. In fairness to Ms. Boone, it wasn't her fault it caught on so much. 🙂

I was in elementary school when this song came out, and my hearing impaired sister learned to do this with sign language in her class for the deaf. She spent weeks teaching me and our middle sister how to sign it ..... I wish I could say I still know how to do that.

Back in its day, "You Light Up My Life" spent 10 solid weeks at the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. A timeless treasure that lives on. A few years ago, Debbie Boone came to perform at the community college auditorium here in my hometown of Rockingham, North Carolina. Part of the Community Concert Series, Ms. Boone's voice was just as powerful as it was back in 1977 with this track. After the concert, she was accessible to meet and talk with. Down to earth, yet still very beautiful she was that day. Nice reaction folks, enjoy your reactions often, I do. Peace.
I haven’t heard that song in decades, and I just sang along for the entire song. I guess I listened it so often as a teen it’s in my DNA.
Everybody stole my thunder of this increditable song & Debby Boone, so I'll add a few things about her father Pat Boone. Pat only trailed Elvis in record sales, in the 50s. He was also an actor in movies. I believe Pat still holds the record for at least one song on Billboards top 100, for 220 weeks straight! I was born in 1954 & I remember how infatuated, my Mother was, with Elvis, Pat Boone and Ricky Nelson! Try to react both Pat & Ricky in the future also.
I remember listening to "The Million Dollar Quartet" recordings (jam session with Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and, supposedly Johnny Cash) and Elvis was talking about one of Pat's hits that he was mad at himself about....seems he was offered the song but lost the demo...Pat didn't lose his and snatched it up and ran with it!

Depending on how one discerns that, I'd think either "Stairway to Heaven" (never a single, but in some ways the No. 1 song from 1971 into the 1980s) or "Dreams." This one was certainly big, though, even if at least half of us hated it.

A true classic by a singing royal family member. The Boone Family with the father Pat Boone a teen idol in the 50’s & 60’s. Very religious with a huge catalog of inspirational songs. Debbie came on the pop scene with this mega hit and was a star. I almost classify her as a one hit wonder but that’s just because she never had the same success with another song. A wonderful talent as was her father.
Was a favorite for weddings when this was popular. You guys are great for expanding all of us with music.
Great genes on display here. Debby's dad Pat Boone was a huge star. He had (I think) 38 top 40 hits. Sold millions of records, and starred in several movies. Debby was popular in the 70s. Her dad was huge in the 50s and 60s. He is 88 years old now and still performs occasionally and does commercials, plays golf and tennis. You should check out some of his great hits.
This song came out in 1977. I just happened to have a bay in the end of June 1977 who spent 6 weeks in hospital due to being a preemie ( 3 lbs. 10 oz. ). When he came home from the hospital I woulds sit ing the rocking chair and sing this sone to him. Really great memories.
Another great softer and slower song would be "I Honestly Love You" by Olivia Newton John which came out in 1974. An absolutely beautiful song that showed a different side of her and is one of my favorites. Another great slow song by a female artist is "Coming Around Again" which came out in late 1986 and sung by the legendary Carly Simon. This is her comeback song and the video is so sweet and she looks incredible too. She had to be in her 50's when this came out. Jay and Amber, please review these songs or at least one of the songs. These are two legendary and strong female performers showing a much more gentle side that I know you would love. By the way, you guys are awesome and I look foward to your videos every day. Keep up the good work and I love your hair Amber!

I played this at many weddings..this song was HUGE!! That year it was up against Hotel California for song of the year. 1977..as much as I like this song ,I was glad Hotel California won. OH! and her dad is a famous singer from in the 50's and 60's "Pat Boone".

I lived in Chicago in the late 70s and they have a radio station called WLS. I was in like 6th grade and called in and won a shirt with the Top 100 songs of the year on it. This song was number 1.
They played this endlessly on the radio until everyone hated it back in day. Blech!

This song always reminds me of my mother. She had a little music turn style with a little girl on top and flowers, and I think a butterfly. When you wound the turnkey on the bottom and then put it down, it would spin around slowly and play this song. She had it on her dresser from as early as I can remember until the day she suddenly passed away. Now, this song just flat out makes me cry. It doesn’t matter how long ago she passed, I think about her every day, but certain songs and certain scents really hit me hard and remind me she’s gone. This is one of those songs.
It’s a wonderful song, but it holds so much in the way of mixed emotions for me. It holds a lot of joy, of the memories of me playing with that music box, and a lot of pain at the fact that she’s no longer here.

But through her mother, she is also a granddaughter of country music singer Red Foley. And she married Gabriel Ferrer, whose parents are actor Jose Ferrer and singer Rosemary Clooney.
As so many have commented this song got massive air play. Her Dad of course Pat Boone was a singer and entertainer. Pat even covered an album of Heavy Metal songs. He thought it was cool. Thanks again for this smile.

This song is one that brings out the emotions on both sides, with critics charging that is was overly sweet. The criticism was due in part because some radio stations seemingly played it every hour.
"Overly sweet" is like calling a brutal murder/torture "a bit unsavory." ... This isn't "sweet," it's saccharine poured atop saccharine and oversung, as if it's the "Ode to Joy" in Beethoven's 9th.

I wish you'd react to Dionne Warwick for female friday. She was very popular from 1955 to 1999 (one of the most charted female vocalist of all time) and Whitney Houston's first cousin. Her songs include "Walk on By", " Anyone Who Had a Heart", "Heartbreaker" written by Barry Gibb (Bee Gees) etc.
