    Just picked up 05 Toyota camry off my CO worker. It will be a basic transportation A to B work and leave my Toyota Sequoia V8 engine home.
    Thanks for this video transmission service. I WILL THE SAME STEPS. I ALSO PICKED UP A FULL 12 BOTTLE CASE TO GET THE COST DOWN. I figured do a drain and refill very 5,000 miles to slowly mixing new and old fluid out until 12 bottles used up.
    Then, afterward, drain and fill every 10,000 miles, keeping fluids clean.
    Done the same on my 06 Toyota Sequoia 4WD, and it had over 300,000 miles.

    If anyone plans to change the trans filter on 3rd gen camrys ,
    Several Tran pan bolts are pinned under driver’s side frame rail to where they are not easily accessible
    I ended up unbolting a portion of a driver’s side motor mount and with a sep jack, raised motor several inches
    Even then, you’ll need a selection of small wrenches , 1/4 drive and.....
    Luck
    to remove 3- 4 bolts and drop pan, clean pan, clean pan magnet and reinstall pan with new gasket
    Would also suggest spraying bolts First and not removing tranny drain plug until you’re sure you can remove ALL pan bolts...

      It seems like every time that I’ve change the filter on the transmission, the screen always looks clean. I’m not saying that it’s a bad idea to change the screen, but it sure is a lot of work. Just out of curiosity what was the condition of the screen after you pulled it out? Was it clogged? Or did it look pretty clear of debris

Once in a great while the transmission will hold out second and then I will let of the gas peddle and it will shift. But that's not frequent. Also the transmission fluid is dirty. Not burnt. There’s no doubt it’s a good idea to change the filter. Typically you have to drop the pan and remove it. I have found that every time that I change the filter the filter is not clogged at all. If it were a paper filter I would change it. Since it is a Metal screen I just try to keep my fluid changed a bit more frequently. These are my thoughts on changing the transmission filter.

      @livefree6878  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @stevensevek6151
      @stevensevek6151 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@livefree6878
      Actually, you don't. I have a Scangauge II in our 2009 RAV4 which connects to the OBD II plug. It reads the ATF fluid temperature. I can start up the vehicle and drive it South down Route 309 from Hazleton, PA to Hometown, PA (about 10 miles) and the transmission fluid will only be at 145°F. Operating temperature for the transmission according to a Toyota repair/service manual is between 158° and 176°. At those temperatures the dip-stick should read in the hot area.
      The reason my transmission isn't at operating temperature making the trip mentioned above is because that is a mostly downhill trip. After I make the trip in the opposite direction it will be at 176° or warmer.
      Normally, a 20 minute drive on the interstate should suffice (as long as it's not all downhill) or even 20 minutes around town with stop & go driving shifting through the gears should work especially if a couple short hills are included.
      You could also get an IR heat reading gun and read the temperature off the fluid pan on the bottom of the transmission. MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE IS LEVEL.
      Some say at idling just wait until the electric cooling fans cycle on twice and the transmission should be at operating temperature. I haven't tried these methods to confirm if that works or not. I'll put that on my to do list.
      You might also mention that not all Toyotas use the same fluid. Newer ones use Toyota ATF-WS and of course the hybrids and some Corollas with CVT transmissions use CVT fluid. Owner's should check their owner's manual for details.

    • @condor5635
      @condor5635 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Steven Sevek - we replied to each other before but my scangauge rarely says anything higher than 160 and that's driving the Highlander pretty hard. Typically driving easily it stays in the 140-150 range. I live in Texas so no hills and it has the cooler package.

    • @njsongwriter

      JackTannehillPromoter - yeah I wouldn’t say I drive it like an old lady but I definitely don’t push it very hard at all. To get it in the 170-180 range would really take a lot of hard driving for me

      to much trans fluid... should be at low fluid level on dip stick when engine and trans is cold... loosen drain plug and let it leak fluid out till it reads on cold level mark on dip stick..

    • @stevensevek6151
      @stevensevek6151 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Was your engine running when you checked it? It is normal to read in the hot zone when the transmission is cold IF your engine is off because there is less fluid (circulating/present) in the torque converter and thus more in the pan.

I’d love to know when you change it if the screen is dirty looking. I always try to keep the transmission fluid freshened up on all the cars. You're wasting money changing transmission fluid on a "fluid-for-life" transmission. I think Toyota's engineers know a whole lot more about lubrication and wear than most backyard mechanics. But, oh well, it's your money. Don't forget to change the freon in the A/C system every 10,000 miles while you're at it.

    • @CD9806
      @CD9806 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The manufacturers (and by association the engineers) don’t want these expensive units to last. Of course they’ll say that hoping you’ll actually listen and end up needing a new tranny after the warranty is up! And it’s a Toyota. It could last you 300K+ miles if looked after! Oil (trans fluid in this case) wears down from heat and friction, just like engine oil. Change it. I mean, why even bother putting a drain plug and dipstick if it never needed changing?
