    It took the entire 4 quarts I had bought. I'd pour in 3 quarts after the change, warm the fluid up. Then add that 4th in 1/2 quart increments to ensure the perfect amount. :)

    Nice video. I have a 2004 Camry 3.3L 250k miles (Still Going Strong) and all I do is drain the transmission pan every 3rd oil change and add 3.7qts.
    I drain it. Blow air through it,(low pressure air) until it stops coming out (dripping) Add 3.5qt. Go for a drive go through all the gears. Usually i add, and it comes to 3.7qts. Just like the owners manual said.

    You can suck out the old ATF through the dipstick hole. No need to use the drain plug. No need to go under the car. Here's the instruction: 1) warm-up the transmission, 2) slip a 1/4 inch diameter tubing into the dipstick hole, 3) apply vacuum to collect fluid into a graduated container, 4) put in new fluid the same amount that you took out. 12V oil extractor with included 1/4 inch tubing is about $25.

    That oil was clean, no need to replace.. Usually you replace it like once in 20k miles to 50k miles depending on the transmission. But this is clean fluid, its still even transparent. Its bad when it becomes brown. Totally agree that there is no need to repeatedly drain the transmission, when you drain its usually 2/3rds of fluid that gets drained and that is totally sufficient to refill only these 2/3rds of capacity and then youre good for another 20k miles at least. Only if the old fluid is really bad then you go and flush in several cycles although there is another pitfall that you might fall into - the transmission might stop shifting properly if you change really bad fluid to completely fresh fluid. And in my opinion for 4cyl front while drive cars with transverse mounted engines it isnt too difficult to pull the transmission and drain the torque converter, also you get a chance to inspect and replace the input shaft seal (and also rear crank seal) once you there.

    Great video and job. I always drain and measure what comes out and then put back the same amount maybe less 0.25 quart. Why would you knowingly under fill by over a quart? Not good for transmission and no reason to in the first place. Also driving for a day alone is sufficient to mix the old and new - no reason to drive for weeks or a month until you do it again. Great overview on procedure Leo. Thanks

    • @ore83
      @ore83  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      condor5635 I knowingly under filled because I did not measure the amount that came out. And it’s way easier to add if low then to drain out if I overfilled it. I’d drive on it longer than a day simply because I don’t want to go spending another $25 on ATF the very next day lol. Hurts my cheap-minded brain. If I can space out the amount of time I’m spending the same amount of money I feel better doing it. Thanks for the comment!

      @@ore83 I did that self pumping out of oil with 12 L on 2011 Volvo S80 with Aisin Toyota tranny and the Volvo Vida dealer software recommend that for their dealers, to pump until you see bubbles in hose, then fill again with 2 L and do it again until the fluid is clear, 12 L is enough. I did a 2 L oil out and 2 L refills, I don't like bubbles may create cavitation! Transmission is very smooth now but to switch to next gear rpm is higher than before, between 1700-2000.

      radiator flushing is the best method there is. Run the engine, remove 4 quart, shut if off.. add 4 quart..
      rinse and repeat until you see new fluid come out. It takes atleast 1 minute to drain 4 quart so theres absolutely no way to dry the transmission. The pump simply isnt that strong.

      Somewhat dark ATF fluid is perfectly normal, provided it's near the full mark on the dipstick still. Fresh ATF fluid will always darken even after a couple thousand miles of driving. But if you'd like, you can still change the fluid. Just make sure it's a drain and fill, and NOT a transmission flush.

    I change my transmission fluid that is 3-4 quarts depending on the vehicle every 6,000 miles together with engine oil. 3-4 quarts is it somewhat from 30-40 % of all transmission full capacity. Thus it makes my trans fluid always clean and in all my cars tranny shift like it is new even if it is 160,000 on the odometer. I don’t wait till it gets dirty after 60,000 miles and then have to do 3 drain&refill processes one after another. My method keeps tranny fluid always clean and for any AT clean fluid is key for long life. So just spend extra $30-40 buying 3-4 bottles of AT fluid together with engine oil and change it every 6,000. Regarding AT filter kit, that one I usually do every 30,000-35,000 miles - basically every 3 years. And your tranny will never disappoint you. Good luck

      No fluid is life time, you lose performance over time and most owners get used to the slow change in how the transmission degrades over time. If you want to drive your car without maintaining it then thats okay, but people who want to keep their cars running in good condition for a long time will change the fluid. If it is intended for 'life' why didn't toyota just seal the transmissions like some european cars eh?

      @@ore83 Yes it shifts pretty well aside from a light thump when it finishes 5th. The top motor mount is shot so I am hoping that is the culprit but the fluid needs to be changed and I have heard so many people say not to change them with high mileage for fear of failure, like I said the fluid is coffee brown, no burnt odor. • @ore83
      @ore83  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A Jizzle the whole “don’t change it if it has high miles” thing is mostly true if the transmission has a problem already and the only thing keeping it working is the worn out fluid which has just enough viscosity to keep it going. Then when you put new fluid in it the thing starts to slip because it was bad to begin with. Toyota transmissions are great. If no burnt smell and you feel it shifts well, changing the fluid can be a great thing for it. My fluid looked relatively new when I changed it the first time, previous owner changed a lot of the fluids while they had it I think.

If the Camry is in good shape it might be worth taking it to a GOOD transmission shop and have them diagnose it. Always cool to know how much $$ you might have to spend to keep it on the road. I have 2010 Camry. Last week I heard some nasty sounds coming from below the car. The sound frequency increased/decreased with the speed of the car. When I would stop it would give me a slight jilt forward, meaning it was definitely coming from the Transmission. The sound came on off several time within a 24 hour period. Now it has been heard for more than a week. I'm going to check the fluid level or change the fluid anyway. I have just over 200,000 KM (120, 000 Miles) and never had any problems with the car.

You will have one or the other. All newer cars have the 'sealed' transmission and use the overflow tube as the level setting device.

Fluid is too cheap not to just do it. Unless you’re lazy, or cheap lol. Running the engine with a cooler line disconnected is fast, however I’ve seen dorks do that and accidentally run the transmission dry in the process.

    If you drain the fluid without warming up the transmission and you replace the drained fluid with fluid of a similar temperature why the need for being so cautious about over-filling it? The owner's manual specifies the capacity... Why not just put that in and be done with it?
    Also, it would help if people knew how long you need to drive it to warm it up. And what is operating temperature? Isn't it funny that Toyota doesn't even tell us in the owner's manual? Yet in a repair/service manual for our 2009 RAV4 they do give that information. (158°F to 176°F) which is what fluid Temperature should be when it is between those two top notches on the dip-stick. But still no ATF temperature gauge? So instead of giving us the tools we need what do they do? They take away the only tool we had, the dip-stick. So now the new models make it even more difficult.
    BTW I can drive my RAV4 for 10 miles and it still isn't at operating temperature. Also, the importance of the vehicle being level needs to be stressed especially for those of us who don't have a garage and think our driveways are level enough when they may not be.
