- In this mixing tutorial I show how to mix vocals with a 2-track beat. I use the SSL GChannel, F6 EQ, and Trackspacer plugins for this demonstration. This can applied in Pro Tools, FL Studio, Logic, Ableton, Cubase, or any other DAW.

Yes! In Studio One,each channel has a gain control,which saves using a plugin but this is how we did it for years. Solid video,Cheers

I also usually add dynamics in as well. I gain reduce, use a Transient Shaper like Smack attack, then maybe the Center Plug-in to make sure my kicks and low end is mono and in the center., I scoop a tiny bit with EQ and a little side chain… Then you gotta blend in your vocal trying to match the compression and adding delay and reverb to glue it all together r

We also have the habit of using a plugin to control/ride volume, rather than using the DAW mixer. We use Sonalkis FreeG though, as it uses very little CPU, it has a large slider and its free!

When using the R6 to cut that range on the beat, try checking the mid setting instead of leaving it on stereo

I'm confused... with the dynamic EQ you said to take out a maximum of -3db but you let Trackspacer take out like -10db at least....
Its both. -6 to -12 on main and -2 to -3 in dyneq

Why would you use a plugin to lower the gain when you could have just done it in the DAW's mixer?
He's adjusting the input volume of the mixer, since it goes: input volume -> fx chain (example: EQ/Trackspacer) -> output volume. The plugins would think the instrumental is louder due to the input volume, so it would process as such. Ducking/scooping more frequencies and harder, then you'd turn down the volume which would make it quieter and like shit lol

I have a question. Should I boost the gain of the beat I created after or before vocals. I have seen tutorials for gain staging but I wasn't sure if I should eq and add reverb to beat before adding a limiter or make a beat record vocals then limit then mix

Do I still need to sidechain the vocals to the instrumental when using Trackspacer? If yes, how do I do that?

Do you experience an audible difference using a plug-in to turn down the gain vs the clip gain?
what if vocals is louder than the beat and needs to blend lower? Especially add echo and doubling of voice.
Turn the Vocal down on Volume or make the beat louder.

Hey I luv the vid but I had a question. You say to turn the beat down with the plugin and then say we can turn it back up later, but wouldn't that just start clipping/peaking? is there a specific way you bring the volume back up? thanks again and have a good one
The reason you turn it down is so that when you add in the vocals you’ll know where your track is now peaking at with the vocals added. Then you can bring the volume back up, but have a limiter to make sure you don’t go above 0 dB
You can use the clip gain to turn the the volume down of the 2track beat (either on the track itself or a clip gain factory plugin). Don’t just turn the volume down on the volume fader bc the levels will still be clipping and you won’t get your desired result.

Why don’t I have the stereo aux in option. I just just main and output under the processing tab
Is the vocal signal sidechained to the instrumental mixer track? At the bottom of the vocal mixer track make sure the sidechain signal is sent to the instrumental.

Only Trackspacer.. it’s just more precise and effective than Dynamic EQ

Definitely need a limiter because there will be new peaks created when you combine the instrumental and vocals come together.

Hi Jerry, i have a question... If our song have more vocals like featuring artists.. How to sightchain different mixers together with the beat? 🤔
You could route all the lead vocals to a bus and title it ALL Lead Vox and then use that for sidechain input to the 2-Track. You could also just have multiple dynamic eq plugins loaded on the 2 track and have each one sidechained to a vocal. The EQ won’t engage unless the vocal that is sidechained to it is active.
The knob for the Sidechain signal shouldn't show any signal being sent. If there was actually any signal being sent then you would be doubling that signal the more that you increase that knob.@HoodMelody

Create a vocal bus with all of the vocals routed to it and then sidechain that to the beat

@@lilnosebleed3683 It’s probably because you still have it routed to the master also. If you route the vocal to a vocal bus, you want to un-route it from going to the master channel. It’s essentially doubling up in volume because the vocal is routed to the master and also to the vocal bus which is also going to the master.

Thank you for the great info! Wondering what else can be used instead of SSL to bring down the output? Any compressor with output gain is enough?
TDR nova I think does dynamic EQ cuts with a side chain enabled.
Also wondering if there is any plugin for free similar to track spacer?
Any plugin with an output gain control, which most of them have. Just have to make sure no other processing on the plugin is taking place. I haven’t found anything free like Trackspacer yet, but I think I paid around $30 for it so it doesn’t break the bank.
Man i dont understand anything on FL like this channel stuff just doesnt work for me i try link one to the beat then i click on the beat to do the eq and it unlinks
