Villagers Oppose Proposed Solid Waste Management Facility at Verna, Demand Public Hearing
Villagers of Nuvem, Loutolim, and Verna are opposing the Goa Waste Management Corporation's (GWMC) proposed Integrated Solid Waste Management Facility (SWMF) at the Loutolim end of the Verna Industrial Estate. The planned 250 TPD SWMF aims to treat municipal solid waste by segregating it into organic and inorganic fractions. Biogas will be generated from the organic fraction and converted into electricity, while the inorganic fraction will be processed to create Refused Derived Fuel (RDF). Residual waste will be landfilled. The project has completed Rapid EIA studies by M/s Sadekar Enviro Engineers Pvt. Ltd., and GWMC is in the process of obtaining environmental clearance.
The villagers are requesting a public presentation and hearing to address potential environmental impacts of the project, both direct and indirect.
