6:27 Brother you are extremely streching it with the Biggest Bollywood movie or Biggest Bollywood actors argument. It was not the biggest Bollywood movie neither did it have the biggest Bollywood names. It's was a pretty B grade movie casting mostly well known supporting actors in Bollywood, NO BIG NAMES. These kind of Hyperbolic statements create extreme misconceptions about India and Indians in foreign minds. I was very young when this movie came out(the target demographic) and even I knew it was a straight to TV movie 😂
Thanks for saying this. Sometimes, narrators use hyperbole to make their point clearer, but in turn paints a false image of the whole thing. This was never going to be the "greatest movie of India" as Austin says.
They weren't the biggest names in Bollywood but there were several well know veterans of Bollywood like Anupam Kher, Johnny Lever, Razak Khan and Satish Kaushik. It wasn't a B-grade movie, more like an A-. The movie probably didn't have a big enough budget for a Hritik, Sharukh or some big star's cameo.

1:25 "india's first ever 3d movie" nope there was a movie called "My Dear Kuttichathan" which was a south indian film made in 1984 almost 20 years before this movie.
Yes! In hindi it was called Chhota Chetan. Then it was rebooted with Urmila Matondkar and that was weird. I loved the original and it was the very first 3D movie of our country.
@@thesocialmisfit oops, my mistake. It isn’t Bollywood’s first 3d movie at all. But one thing that rings true even today is that it surely is one Bollywood’s most infamous 3d flops, mostly due to poor writing and huge amounts of bad technological decisions.
1:29 Correction. India's first 3D movie was 'My dear Kuttichatthan' released in 1984. It was a Malayalam (Language of the South Indian state of Kerala) movie. It was way ahead of its time and had the Highlight box office collection for a long time. It is considered as one of the best movies from India (the later adaptations and dubbed versions were not that good though). And it's also about magic and children.
I'd like to correct that, this is at best a mediocre project for Bollywood of that particular time, the cast is mostly filled with b or c list actors and there are no MAJOR names attached to it. And I'd say that it was highly unlikely that this movie would succeed with decent numbers. Even to this day Bollywood doesn't have much in it's portfolio of the fantasy genre. In the past 2 decades Indians have grown really fond of major Hollywood franchises and they do well on the box office. On the other hand Bollywood is struggling after covid to even earn the costs of movies due to many reasons, but one major reason is definitely the lack experimentation in different genres.
@@Agnosticcc-x3m Well yes, but no. It was the dialogues and the romance which was cringy, but the vfx was top notch. And the story has great potential, but the execution was subpar at best.

Only one of the two main girls became a relatively big name in regional Indian movies but I think she too had to go through a MMS leak Scandal once she grew up, other kid actors never became big. The older actors cast in this movie were already well known supporting actors in actual Indian movies, so they remained so
Most of the supporting cast were big names in themselves. For example, the Groundskeeper character Austin speaks of in the movie is played by Anupam Kher, he currently stars in multiple big budget (way way bigger than Abra ka Daabra's budget) and some Hollywood movies and shows too like New Amsterdam. The main girl lead is Hansika Motwani and she went on to become one of the biggest actors in South Indian cinema and has acted in about 100 or so movies by now. The main boy lead gave up acting and went on to become a Director of Photography after getting trained in LA.
@@apogeelord7013 I didn't mean regional as a derogatory term, if the movies release only in a particular region than they would be regional. Most Hindi movies are released all over India. Like Bhojpuri movies would be considered only regional as you won't find them out of their core region. Not all but many Telugu, Kannada movies only release mostly or near the state. It has started to Change a LOT but Hansika Motwani was doing good when it was confined to a region, so I mentioned regional films. I hope my explanation wa satisfactory 👍🏻
Funnily, I get from this movie(from the snippets presented here) the vibe of the first two instalments of 80's Polish "Mr. Kleks" series(based on the books by Jan Brzechwa, written between WWII and early 60s). It's funny because the first instalment in the series, "Mr.Kleks's Academy" was first translated into English by Rowling, plus Helena Brzechwa(daughter of the author) accused Rowling of plagiarising it in "Harry Potter", though she never sued. The case wouldn't have been solid to begin with, as the only undeniable similarity is that mr. Kleks looks like Dumbledore, runs a boarding school, and is a wizard(kinda; what he does is based on fantasticalised Oriental philosophy).

Instead it looks like a low budget knock off. And then it got merged with Willy Wonka? That... could be a real test of magic if they were smart and not just product placing.
I really don't like any reviews on Indian movies from the west because they are full of stereotypes. But when I watched your video, it was great. No stereotypes, no jokes on Indian culture and focused only on the topic. Great Job!!!
But many of the things he stated are wrong like this wasn't our first 3D movie or this wasn't a big movie of Bollywood at that time. I don't even remember hearing about this movie at all unless it aired on TV.

Kudos to you for sitting through this monstrosity lol. It wouldn't need an experience producer to have a glance at this and predict that it's going to bomb or not
Kids were only taken in movie coz of their fair skin. That’s the issue with Bollywood. Their view is too Eurocentric. They stereotypically cast minorities from Northern india and mixed ppl as actors.
I remember being a huge movie buff since early 2000s and the only movies which had any sort of hype that’s close to what’s being presented in this video were Main Hoon Na, Swades, Lakshya, Dhoom, Veer Zara, and the likes.. this video exaggerates a lot about the hype this movie had, at best it’s a tier-3 movie produced at that time
This reminds me of the type of movie that would bomb in theaters, but make its money back through cable. Kind of like how you could always find Catwoman on fx or amc.
I understood what you meant. Like some movies bomb at box-office but then gain the tag of cult classic and people wonder why did this movie even failed in the first place but believe me this movie wasn't like that. Yes, many children watched it when it aired on TV but it failed even there.

This is my first video and I have no idea what your channel is about but Man crazy props for sitting that abomination. I as an Indian I never even heard about that calamity and I became a Harry Potter fan in 2001 itself after the first movie.
Most important thing was that the original Harry potter itself was a big phenomenon in India, and the dub was available in various Indian languages along with English, moreover, the highest rated kids channel at that time in India called POGO broadcasted the original Harry Potter & the teasers or ads started coming in minimum 6 months before it being aired on tv, which means most Indians had already seen Chamber of Secrets by then, so why would anyone pay attention to a substandard version, the original was available in dubbed in their own language at the comfort of their home.
Exactly. Og Harry Potter movies (Hindi dubbed) aired on Cartoon Network as well in (2002 or 2003). Hell even the channels which belonged to local cable operators also used to play Harry Potter movies quite frequently. I think I only saw this "Abra Ka Dabra" movie on some low rated/trp channels like "Filmy" channel or Sahara one.
It's hilarious to hear this western commentary from an Indian perspective. I remember when this film had come out. It was a B-grade movie and it came and went and is now remembered as a nostalgia piece at best. It was nothing like the big budget Indian Harry Potter prestige project that the commentator thinks it was.
It doesn’t say “$25 billion in 1997” but instead “$25 billion *as of* 1997”. Meaning HP as a franchise has made $25 billion since it’s initial release in 1997.
As an Indian I am glad that you mentioned this movie... As a child I was looking forward for the sequel mentioned at the ending... And the Parle G and other brand ads were funny and forced.. lol Movie for fun for its time
Did they at least pay royalties to the original makers of Harry Potter? I know that Bollywood is mega big on “re-creating” movies and not doing so, they’ve done this to many East Asian films and some American. Typically when America does this they buy the rights to re make an American version.
1. A common man 2. Delivery man 3. Fear 4. Win A Date With Tad Hamilton! 5. Leap year 6. Kill bill 7. Adam Sandler's Just go with it All of these are hollywood remake/inspired movie from bollywood movies, and no royalties were paid for any of them, even if talking about music for example Britinay spears "hit me baby one more time " The composition was copied from bollywood musical, the limited point being Hollywood/bollywood take inspiration from each other and make the contend palatable for their home audience, and paying any sort of royalties is an extreme rare thing rather than the norm

What?😮 No i think they got that bit from chamber of secrets which was released in 2002. Tom's diary was a horcrux (of course at that point it wasn't known that diary is a horcrux)
Saw a scene of this on cartoon network and it was a total cringe fest 😂😂 with poor plot, charecter development. It was such an obvious and poor ripoff...maybe that was its downfall. Half the time you'd just feel disappointed because you are unconsciously comparing it to the harry potter movie
Even in childhood i felt a bit uneasy watching this , as i watched harry potter on doordarshan before , I didn’t know what it was that i felt until my teenage when i Learned the word “cringe”
I really enjoyed this video a lot, so much so when it ended I kinda wanted to know more. If it gets enough traction please could you do a follow up, maybe looking at the aftermath like what the actors and director did after? Did it affect their careers? Did it affect the 2 companies that got advertised in anyway or did they make any response upon seeing the finished production? Was JKR or the anyone involved in the actual Harry Potter Movies ever made aware of the movie, did they ever comment on it? Overall though, even though the CGI looks a little cheap & it is definitely rough around the edges & nowhere near compares to Harry Potter movies it still looks like it has its own little charm to it. If Bollywood B movies can garner a similar reputation to some of the Hollywood B movies, I could definitely see this becoming a bit of a cult classic among fans.
I remember back in 2003 when I was just 7 and laying my eyes on this film and hating it instantly, even though I didn't watch any Harry Potter movies yet at that time.

I kinda wish Austin consulted someone who is intimately familiar with Bollywood like Patrick H. Willems did. (Though in that case it was Tollywood)
Trust me, him making these statements wont affect how people look at India, Most people in the US already hate India for being scammers
@@LetsPlayAceCraft yeah, the common American conception is India is a place full of scammers who poop in the streets next to their beggar children and chase after any woman who dares to go outside to r@pe and kill her. I remember Abra ka Dabra. I was 8 years old and while the craze for Harry Potter was huge, like many others, I didn't have the opportunity to watch them. Getting a DVD to watch it was difficult and more so to get time in an Indian Household to keep aside 3 hours to watch it. There was no way, we would go watch a children's movie and that too in English. I still remember watching the first full harry Potter movie in Azkaban. So a Indian movie was a god send, as I can force my parents to watch this. But the movie was a dud, nothing appealing to kids........ Even I at that age was not sure of what to enjoy in it. Except for Carpet riding than Broom riding.
I watched my first Harry Potter movie in Azkaban too but the Dementors got very offended and I had to go back to my cell.
