I've been using the Sony FE 16-35mm f4 (an excellent wide-angle zoom) on my Sony a7rii for over a year for landscape and architecture photography and wanted to upgrade to a prime for improved performance. Given my experience with the 25 & 85mm Batis lenses and 35mm Loxia, it was just a matter of choosing between the Loxia 21 and Batis 18. In looking over my favorite landscape images from the Sony FE 16-35mm, I found the majority were within the 16-18mm range. Given that I already owned a 25mm focal length, the Batis 18mm made the most sense for my needs. I've had this optic for about two weeks now and truly amazed at the improved IQ and color pop of the images over the Sony wide-angle zoom. The sharpness of this lens has to be seen to be believed. I also found the manual focus very responsive and precise.
Thanks again for providing such useful information in a candid, yet non-bias format. I find your videos a most valued resource when considering lenses for my full-frame, mirrorless Sony cameras. Greatly appreciated!

I have recently purchased the Batis 18mm, and am very very happy with this lens, it compliments my Loxia 35mm which I also use quite a lot. I'm going to attempt some astrophotography in the early spring. Thanks for the great channel Mathieu, always helpful and informative.

A very good review. Better than what I see from most people. I really like the way you showed the different field of views for multiple shots. That pushes me towards the Batis. However, I found it a bit inconsistent at the end that you recommend the Loxia for landscape but during the review you do a good job of showing why the Batis was better for the waterfall situation. Great review though. Thanks again.

Great comparison video Mathieu. I love the Loxias on the A7Rii but I went with the Batis 18mm when I wanted a wide-angle for architecture and landscape shots because of the extra field of view. The Batis results are spectacular. What surprised me the most was how shallow the depth of field can be at f/2.8 even with such a short focal length as 18mm.
I agree, it's quite good and the bokeh more than decent.

Mathieu I think you mentioned in the video that while the Batis is better wide open but Loxia is better in higher F numbers. I am shooting mainly landscape and cityscape. mostly F11 to F 16. Do you think the batis will suffer too much in these F numbers and if you were me which one you would choose for this type of shoots. I just afraid that 21mm might not be that wide but on the other hand I really want a lens that is sharp from corner to corner.

The difference in sharpness is not a lot really but yes the Loxia performs better from f/5.6 and you get less diffraction at f/16. So if sharpness is your top priority, the Loxia is better. If you want a wider angle of view, you will get good results with the 18mm as well.

Even though the Batis is focus by wire, the divas distance display can act just like a marker, correct? So I can "mark" by remembering the distance readout and plan my shots, no? My current 55mm Zeiss can't be marked and it's frustrating... I still like having the auto focus as an option so maybe the focus distance display on the Baits will save me although I like the look of the Loxia much more.
Yes you can use the OLED screen as reference for the focus distance. But somehow I still prefer the old-fashion distance scale of the Loxia :)

My hesitation with the Batis is that I love manual focus and loath electronic focus rings. How does the manual focus feel on the Batis? Does it feel like it is connected to the lens, or do you get that slippery electronic feel that most sony lenses have?
I found the focus ring on the Batis to lack some precision when you need to nail focus precisely. You also need to turn it more to change the same amount of distance. The Loxia gives you a better experience, no question about that.
Interesting... I was ready to get the Batis 18mm... but now I'm not sure. I mainly need it for shooting 4K video and then probably in low light... Will the Batis be up to the job as I think manual focusing will be best (for video)... can you help my with a suggestion or two? Did I understand you correctly -- the Batis 18mm is difficult to manual focus?
The batis is not difficult to manual focus but the Loxia will give you more precision because of the mechanical focus ring. It is also a better choice to work with a follow focus.

thanks for the well thought comparison. but is it true that the Loxia lenses are designed better for videos than the Batis? im rooting to buy the Loxia if its true. For now im holding my horses. please let me know your opinion. i will use the lens like i said for videodocumentaries. thanks a lot!
Yes the Loxia lenses are better for video for two reasons:
- mechanical focus ring which is not only more pleasant and precise to use but works better with a follow focus because the focus distance won't reset every time you turn on and off the camera
- you can de-click the aperture ring for more precise adjustments.
Just purchased the Loxia 21mm. As a former Leitz super-angulon user, I can say that for street photography, taking candids with faces as a primary areas of focus, that in many cases a 21mm can be too wide. One needs to be really close in. Seeing a great decisive moment in front of you may not look so great as a full frame capture when too far back. Would I have considered the Batis after seeing this review? It is a good review. I might sum it up that for fitting larger scenes and more info into the frame, 18mm is the way to go. For street photo, supply a caveat that talks about how close one needs to be to their moving subject to better capture a fleeting moment without the subject set too far back in the frame. I purchased the 21mm based on this past experience, though the Batis looks really cool and I am sure is equally a great pleasure to use.

I'm trying to decide between this lens and the Loxia 21mm 2.8 for backpacking. I plan on doing lots of landscapes obviously and some astro. Any thoughts/suggestions? I thru hike long distances so grams matter.

The Batis has better coma performance (not a huge difference but it's there). It's larger but lighter than the Loxia.

Loxia 35 or 21? Minimum focusing distance of both camera? Which one shorter in size? Which one is great as first lens and can be use in more situation?
A7 III with Loxia 35mm f2 or Fuji X100F or Leica TL2 with 35mm f2 or Leica Q2?

A 35mm is a nice lens to start with, you can do lots of things with that field of view.
Mathieu Gasquet I see, if I want to shoot manual, travel, street and general photography, and I will do TH-cam video and travel record video as well, and I want to have a camera always with me that doesn't too big that feel burden to carry with you in a sling bag like Peak Design Sling, do you recommend:
A A7 III
Or
Fuji X100F + Sony AXP55 camcorder?
I like the X100F, good manual camera with leaf shutter, hybrid viewfinder, ND filter and so on, the camcorder has 4K(no slog) and night vision, I think this pair is easier to carry than a A7, or am I wrong? Or A7 is easy to carry with you every time you go out based on your experiences?
The X100F is more compact but the A7 series is easy to carry with one lens, especially the loxia series.
However the video quality on the A7 II is not great. The A7r II is better but more expensive, otherwise there is the A7s II but that's more video oriented.
Oh my you have made it very hard for me.. but not for the Loxia.. as i dont buy manual lens.. I have the Zeiss 16-35 lens which i love.. but considering selling it for the 18mm Batis.. i love primes but i got so many lens that i tend to hate switching lens because i do events mostly and switching lens can be a hassle. but what sold me is i love the bokeh you can get the this lens on the wide angle flower shots you did which the 16-35 cant do. So question is the 16-35 not even close to the 18mm and should i dump it for the Batis 18.. Also another question.. do u think this lens would be to heavy to put on my came tv gimbal on the sony a7rii or a6300 i know the Zeiss 16-35 felt to front heavy
The Batis 18mm is very light (330g) so you shouldn't have problem on your gimbal. If you mostly use the 16-35mm around 17mm-20mm, then I think you'll be fine with the Batis and the 2.8 aperture will help you on many occasions.
In my location there are no sample Loxia lenses. If I want one its money down and wait for delivery. While I have no doubt about the quality I am concerned about the MF. My experience with the A7R2 and MF with Sony lenses is not good. FP is inaccurate and MF often fails to nail it. Question 1. Is the focusing with the Loxia reliable. 2. Do I need to set the aperture wide open to focus this lens. Thanks in advance and thanks for the good reviews.
The Loxia has a mechanical focus ring so the experience is definitely more reliable than with most Sony lenses that have a fly-by-wire ring. If I remember correctly the camera keeps the widest aperture in live view so you don't need to set it manually.

Man I still can't decide between the two lol. I'm looking towards the Loxia for being just so small. But the better weather sealing on the Batis is also nice. I wish the Loxia was just wider. In the end it's all about the sharpness. But if it's hard to decide if you one is sharper depending on which stops. lol
Personally, I love the Loxia, it's one of my favourite E-mount lens and I like the small form factor. Sharpness is excellent on both so I wouldn't worry too much about that, the field of view can be more important. The wider Batis can be useful in smaller places, or in tight urban spaces.
After using both for about a month , I have to say .. in my opinion Batis 18 is better, great AF and MF, excellent pix. and video ,weather sealed, wider field of view, less weight, better astro, oled . The only advantage for loxia is the size(Not weight)

Yea, the e-mount version, just wondering how you think it compares to the Batis in general. Contemplating which one to get. Voigtlander would be wider but f4.5, Batis would be less wide but f2.8. Then again maybe the fstop doesnt matter too much since I'll use it on an A7s2.
The Batis is probably sharper at the corners. The f/2.8 aperture helps in low light. If you plan to use it in that kind of situations a lot, the Zeiss lens would be better. Even if the A7s II has great ISO performance, f/4.5 can be quite dark.

great comparision! I believe I will choose Loxia for the better quality of F5.6 and abover. the difference at F2.8 is very very little. while at f5.6 the batis is obviously soft. right? I guess Europe indor archtecture would need Batis but for outdoor mountains loxia is better.
Yes the difference at 2.8 is minimal. At f/5.6 the Loxia is slightly sharper but again not a big difference. In the end they are two great lenses but the Loxia is still my favorite (smaller, mechanical rings, super sharp). I would consider the Batis for extensive astro-photography or internal architecture work.
bought loxia 21 today. quit satisfied. one interesting thing I noticed is that Loxia actually only "shows" 2 meters and then goes to infinity. even shorter than the Batis' 5 meters shows on LED you mentioned, right? lol
True but that is common with distance scales stamped on the lens barrel or focus ring directly. It is difficult to have all the distance available because of the size of the lens itself and because passed 2 or 5m, the changed required is very little. The OLED screen should give an advantage however because the camera can determine the distance more precisely.

I found to push to infinity doesn't means best image quality. usually it need to turn back a little but this little still need to use the screen to determind. any tricks to focus on loxia 21?
I realize the Batis is lighter but I could carry the Loxia in my pocket. I had the Batis 18 and found it to be a wonderful lens for photos but when I got the 16-35 GM The IQ was as good. Still want a Wide Angle prime and the Loxia may be my choice. Was disappointed with the Loxia 50 color and sold that lens.
I've used the Loxia 21 again recently and I just love that lens. It tick all the boxes for me.

Thanks for the review. I am sure many people are torn between these two lenses. What I don't like is when someone review two lenses with different focal lengths and then shows the difference in field of view by adding a crop rectangle onto the wider lens's output. While the rectangle shows the difference in dimensions, It fails to show the difference in perspective and angle. It's a little misleading.
With the same distance and camera position, changing focal length doesn't influence perspective so the rectangles are not misleading, they just help to give an idea about the difference in field of view. Then I also included a few examples (like at 6:38) where I took the same scene with the two lenses but changed the composition in-between because in a real world, you look for the best frame according to the lens you have (in that specific example, I panned to the left with the Loxia lens in comparison to the Batis shot so yes in that case, the perspective changed).
also, when you say that Loxia shines in follow focusing...this follow focus means..you focus the lens on a moving subject? sorry noobie on some terms. thanks.
no, it's just that the mechanical ring is more pleasant to use than the electronic ring of the Batis.
The Loxia Batis hood isn't totally metallic.
I'd go with the loxia for the following reasons:
It looks nicer
It's more hefty
Mechanical gears and markings are better than electronically controlled ones
It fits my lens collection more appropriately (I have 14mm, 28, 35, 50, 60, 85, 70-200, 150 - 600).

Objectively, the Batis looks like the better lens. Ironically, the Batis lenses are perhaps the ugliest I've ever seen. These things shouldn't matter but they do and they are hideous, imo. Anyway for me auto focus is no concern especially at wide angle and fly-by-wire mechanics are sacrilegious. Would like a Loxia!
