Last year I tried growing melons for the first time and they all germinated fantastically and were growing away in the Polytunnel and greenhouse. One even got to around 6ft long. Unfortunately I lost most of them because the stems rotted away at the soil interface. This year I’m going to try them in tomato halos to keep the stems dry, if I don’t have enough halos I will be using the bottomless pot option. I’ve grown tomatoes in bottomless pots in the past and they worked fine so I’m hoping the same is true for melons. What spacing would you recommend, I’m thinking of growing vertically up a string line at a spacing of 30cm. I love the idea of the mesh panels in the tunnel and using them to support wooden slats to act as trays. A unique idea 👍🏻
I had some melons do that last year too which was very frustrating so I think the halos are a great idea. Let me know how you get on. I grow mine about 30cm apart and up strings (needs to be strong) and they usually do fine. What varieties are you growing?
@@veggieplot I have one Emir that’s in the greenhouse and the other two I have no idea what type they are other than ones a cantaloupe and the other a honeydew. The Emir in the greenhouse is doing well but I’ve been in this situation before so I’m not counting my chickens yet 😬
@@veggieplot Yes as a liner but you could probably ask a farmer for some fleece As it's not worth much these days and Getting local products is better for the environment.
I have grown Tumbling Tom tomatoes for years in tubs or troughs. However I grow them outside which helps re watering. I hope you do like the taste Chris although they maybe wont compare to the other varieties you grow.
They sure are fun to grow being so small and hassle free, I can't believe I haven't grown them before. They may not taste the same but I'm sure they'll find a use in the kitchen. I had no idea you grew so much on your garden Sue, it sounds amazing.
Oh 😂😂😂 more tomatoes, tumbling toms… one I haven’t grown either, and never grown any tomatoes in hanging baskets. Wish those labels were cheaper!! Look great. I’ve just found my nine star broccoli 🥦 cutting has rooted ❤❤ my first ever cutting that has grow. So pleasing. No luck with melons here, did sugar baby x 20 and only got 1. 😢 well one is better than none. Can I ask do you weigh everything you harvest for the journal? Must get some scales and a note pad to jot harvests. Keep smiling Chris. Have a lovely weekend Allie & Tricia xx
Hi Allie and Tricia, yep more tomatoes 😂 although it remains to be seen if they’re going to be keepers for next year, we’ll have to see. I agree about the labels but I figure they’ll last for years to come + I can read them really easily. Only one melon out of 20, that’s 😢 didn’t they germinate? No matter my trying, one of my watermelons has just keeled over and given up the ghost! It just goes that way sometimes I suppose. It’s been a gorgeous weekend here, I hope you’ve had a good one too.
I imagine they’re a good and tasty version of shop bought tomatoes. I’m looking forward to trying them and growing them too, there’s always something new to try 👍🏻. Do you grow any particular varieties?
Thank you for yet another informative and interesting video. May I ask, if cuttings are taken from the tuber, does this render the tuber to be non viable and has to be thrown away, or will it still grow on and flower as if nothing had been done? Thank you. Happy gardening 🙂
In my experience the tuber heals over quite quickly and so long as it’s not the only shoot to develop on it, the others grow away without any problems. I don’t make cutting from all the shoots on a tuber and as most of the tubers have been split, they seem to do just fine.
Looking good, Chris. Hopefully the new tomatoes will taste nicer than you're expecting 😊💚🌿
I hope so too but it will be fun trying even if not.
Fantastic well organised poly! 😊
Thank you 👍🏻
your poly look spotless
Thanks Con, I had a big tidy up and feel I'm finally ready for 2024.
Thank you Chris, very interesting👍
Thank you Debs

I use the wool fabric that's inside an old duvets as it insulates the basket as well as holds water.
That’s interesting, I’ve never heard of doing that before. Is that just as a liner?

I usually grow Tumbling toms and they taste OK maybe a solid 6 or 7 out of 10 for taste.

Re labels. I saw someone using strips from plastic milk bottles. Takes a felt tip perfectly, and a good re use of waste.
Yes, it works well and I have made and used them on many occassions before. They have to be recycled eventually but they do work well.
