@@kl8455 F&J's former manager, Janie Hoffman really screwed up opportunities for the band. Jason Newsted tried to get his former band to open for Metallica during the black album tour. The reason it never happened is because Janie had an issue with Metallica's manager and told him off. F&J was blackballed from ever getting the offer to tour with Metallica again. This is just one (a major one at that) of many times Janie blew great opportunities for F&J because she let her personal feelings get in the way of professional business. I was friends with Ed Carlson, that is why I am aware of this. I told him that it were my band, I would have her fired. Unfortunately, F&J did not have a leader, per se. I highly doubt if all of this went right that they would have as big as Metallica, however, I am certain they would have been much more successful.

When the Storm Comes Down was the first time I saw them live. did have Eric AK stand by my best friend and I in the crowd watching Mercyful Fate after he was finished with their set.
Would definitely recommend "Gods of Wrath" next off this album. If you're looking for tracks in other albums, I'd recommend "Watch the Children Pray" and "Badlands."

Metal Church' first two records are classics. Thx for doing another song by this band. And George, man you're skills in analysing music are incredible. And Ryan is the perfect partner with a different (but equally great) approach.
The entire album is an underground classic, not a bad song on it. The "ballad" Gods of Wrath (About the myth of Prometheus) is incredible, I dare you to not bang your head during the chorus, so damn heavy! The album was originally released independently by the band but Lars Ulrich was a huge fan and got them signed to Elektra who re-released the album.
Honestly have trouble calling them underground. My first experience with the band was them getting radio play years ago. Lesser known yeah, but any band that can get any form of radio play even on rock radio immediately puts you far above the popularity most metal bands will ever get

IMO this is one of the best metal albums (front to back) that I've ever heard. You mentioned "Merciless Onslaughr" - excellent instrumental! One of my favorite tracks is their cover of "Highway Star" Exceptional! Keep it up guys! Good job..
The sound of Metal Church takes me way back! Always loved this band. I remember as a young lad stealing cigarettes and beer from my mom and dad and replaying badlands over and over with a few friends in my room! Man good music and good times!
Great reaction, guys! Please check out "No Place for Disgrace" by the band Flotsam and Jetsam! It's the title track from their 2nd album released in 1988, and it's about Japanese Samurai warriors. Jason Newsted formed this band before joining Metallica in 1986 after Cliff Burton (bassist) died in a bus accident. Flotsam and Jetsam are still going strong. They released their 14th album last June. Thanks!
I got into Metal Church late. Didn't care for the name of the band. When I listened to this album, could not believe how serious, passionate and groovy the band was. And song after song, they kept the same level of intensity and skill. It's a shame they did not become a household name in metal. Deservred more appreciation.

As a composer, I would say writing a good song is a skill of itself. If you can write effective songs, that is indeed a strong skillset in music regardless of how technical it is! Also, Kirk Arrington's infectious grooves are INDEED underrated! I once knew a drummer who could play them and it's more technical than you'd think!
Their "big" album was The Dark, which is an incredible metal album. I'd highly suggest grabbing some tracks off that to see how they actually stepped up.
Second best song next to Metal Church so cudos. Wish you guys could have seen all these 70's, 80's, and 90's hard rock and metal bands in concert during their heyday. Live is a total emersion into the experience of liking the sound and specifically the songs and it just takes you over. Keep it up.
These guys were so good live, that I was surprised how good they worked in the studio. Saw 'em open for Metallica on New Years in like 1986, with Mercyful Fate and it was one of the most amazing nights of my life. Yeah, guys, this is DEFINETELY a classic metal album - and don´t forget the uncredible production, all the instruments are so clear and powerful, it was - and still is - a highlight together with their second album, The Dark. R.I.P. Mr. Wayne, the best MC shouter of all times.
Saw them in 1986 at the Cameo theater, San Antonio for $10. Was in the 10th grade and what a show that was! Me and my garage band were even playing that in 86'...Those were the days!! I wish I still had that concert shirt...Now I have my two teenage boys listening to them, passing that torch.

Metal church has been on a regular rotation since they came out. Some of my favorites are Metal Church, Badlands, Watch the Children Prey, and Fake Healer which is one of my favorites due in part to the lyrics. It's pretty awesome that you guys randomly found this band.

Method to Your Madness would be my choice for next MC reaction. I will always think of the movie Platoon when I hear Method to Your Madness. I was living in Berlin when that movie came out and was into The Dark album then as well. To me, the song and movie will always be connected.
The self titled track is literally thrash metal with a hip hop beat, that's why they got into it, which is rare for thrash to have those kinds of drums.

This album, and their follow-up album, The Dark, are two of The Greatest Albums in metal history. Unfortunately, not nearly enough people know this. The next song, Gods Of Wrath, is phenomenal.

They had a brief hiatus in the 90s during the Grunge period, but came right back in the late 90s, and have been releasing albums throughout the new Millenium. However, they might be done now as their returning vocalist killed himself around the same time Dusty Hill from ZZ Top died. And what's cool about that From the Vault album is that they did a few re-records of a couple old Mike Howe songs from Blessing. "Fake Healer" and "Badlands." Both classic songs from that 1989 album redone within the last few years. Fake Healer is a classic that's about a doctor/surgeon who's only in the profession for the money, and is overly worried about malpractice suits.
Metal Church had a massive impact. Their contribution to musicians cannot be calculated or quantified but it's very real. I'm glad you guys profiled this masterpiece.

The self titled track is literally thrash metal with a hip hop beat, that's why they got into it, which is rare for thrash to have those kinds of drums.
Great observation! The groove is actually funky, with one of the fiercest riffs to grace this planet! Kurt is truly one of the riff kings - a licensed riff-ologist! How bout that sinister vocal. Beyond The Black snapped my neck the first time I heard it - and it was right then that I decided to go back to CHURCH!

Metal Church was considered a B list band but they were definitely known and popular in there hay day
This album, and their follow-up album, The Dark, are two of The Greatest Albums in metal history. Unfortunately, not nearly enough people know this. The next song, Gods Of Wrath, is phenomenal.

What albums did Metal Church have after the debut album from 1985? A BUNCH. They have been releasing albums ever since. They had a brief hiatus in the 90s during the Grunge period, but came right back in the late 90s, and have been releasing albums throughout the new Millenium. However, they might be done now as their returning vocalist killed himself around the same time Dusty Hill from ZZ Top died. But here's a list of Metal Church's discography:

So if you notice there, their first two singers came back later on, Wayne in 1999 for one album, who then later died of natural causes, and then Mike Howe who left during the 90s mess, but then was called back when Munroe left after the 2013 album. However, like I said, Mike committed suicide during the Pandemic. Not sure we ever got the motivation, but it really sucked to hear, because everything seemed to be looking up for him and band after his return to the band in 2016 after 22 year break. Long time fans of Metal Church always loved Mike's haunting vocal style, especially on Blessing in Disguise in 1989. Of course, OG fans preferred Wayne's vocals, but I didn't come onto the band until after Mike started with them for Blessing. But anyway, those are all of Metal Church's albums. And what's cool about that From the Vault album is that they did a few re-records of a couple old Mike Howe songs from Blessing. "Fake Healer" and "Badlands." Both classic songs from that 1989 album redone within the last few years. Fake Healer is a classic that's about a doctor/surgeon who's only in the profession for the money, and is overly worried about malpractice suits.

Metal Church had a massive impact. Their contribution to musicians cannot be calculated or quantified but it's very real. I'm glad you guys profiled this masterpiece.
