If you're planning to hike Mount Whitney, there's a new free service that monitors recreation.gov for permit openings and posts updates on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. This can be a useful tool for securing last-minute permits. Additionally, the website "Outdoor Status" offers a paid service that helps you find permits for specific dates and group sizes. Note that recent incidents on the Mountaineers Route resulted in fatalities, so it's crucial to stick to the regular trail and be well-prepared.
Hikers should be aware of new permit fees for popular trails. The Lost Coast Trail in Northern California has introduced a $12 permit fee in addition to existing costs. This is part of a broader trend as more people take to the trails, requiring additional funding for maintenance. For those hiking in Yosemite, the John Muir Trail (JMT) section between Clark Point and the Panorama Trail is closed due to a rockfall, and the High Sierra Camps have reopened with reservations already sold out for 2024.
Hiking safety is paramount, especially during extreme weather conditions. Camelback Mountain in Phoenix will be proactively closed during the summer heat to prevent rescues, as it is known for having the highest rescue rate in the U.S. For those heading to Mount Whitney in June, expect snow conditions and come prepared with microspikes and trekking poles. Always check park alerts and trail reports before heading out.
There are some interesting developments in hiking gear, such as the hiking exoskeleton, a Kickstarter project designed to enhance walking and running capabilities. While it's still in its novelty phase, it reflects a growing interest in innovative hiking aids. Additionally, REI has stopped gear rentals in many locations, impacting those who rely on rentals for hiking and backpacking trips.
June 1st marks National Trails Day, a day dedicated to trail maintenance and conservation. It's a great opportunity for hikers to give back to the trails they love. The Leave No Trace organization has made its courses available for free online, promoting responsible hiking practices. New conservation efforts include the establishment of the Angeles National Monument in Southern California, offering additional protection to areas previously designated as national forest land.
Should I try the mechanical leg thing?
Despite being a no-longer-young guy with back and knee issues, I’ve nonetheless managed to day-hike most of the 50 state summits (and many others). But I’ve been putting off Gannett Peak, primarily due to its length. Not sure I can handle 50+ miles in a day. This might actually make that feasible. Would greatly value an honest review by an expert like yourself.
Frankly, I think it would be interesting to see a real and honest review of these things.
I can't imagine that something so small would have enough power to make a difference. There may be a psychological boost though, if you believe it's helping.
Skiers have been using similar mechanical assist devices for years. Of course that's because many skiers (me included) have ruptured one or both ACLs at some point, and they want to keep skiing. ⛷
I vote yes on the mechanical legs. This will be the only place anyone will really know their worth and best use case. It is what it is.
I love these monthly updates. Keep them coming.
Thank you for talking about loss of REI rentals being a blow to the accessibility of the outdoors.
FYI … In the phoenix area we have the Maricopa Trail. I hav only hiked a small part of it but it circumscribes much of the Phoenix metro area.
I usually see no more than a couple of rattlesnakes per year, but already this year I've had 4 encounters (3 seen, 1 heard).
Thank you for your latest email newsletter reminding us to please use your link to the REI sales event I have used your link to Bookmark both REI and Amazon sites but would have forgotten to use my Bookmark and entered the REI sales event through their link in their sales announcement newsletter email. I have benefited so much from your TH-cam channel that I love to support you however I can ! 😍
Ahh I appreciate it so much, massive thank you for your support, I couldn't do this without your help. Hoping to reach and help more and more folks so I can do more and more. Thanks again and hope to see you out there!
Great update video, Cris! OC Parks also just opened the new Red Rock Wildnerness with over 8 miles of new hiking trails.
Yes! Trying to work out a way to go shoot it too... stay tuned..
Thanks for the update, Chris! I really enjoy these. The rattlers are definitely out here in Northern Utah. I've run into two Great Basin Rattlesnakes in the last couple of weeks. One of them put on quite a show for us too. Being honest about gear is the only way to be. You're providing necessary information so people can make critical decisions on what gear they can rely on to take in the back country. That's to bad about REI dropping rentals. I ran the rental shop in the SLC store in the late 90's and we sold a ton of gear to people that had rented from us. It's a great way to try out gear before you buy and it's a perfect vehicle for people that might want to try out hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, etc., without having to buy expensive gear that they might not ever use again.
Great point, @aboutthejourney! When I was getting into scuba, I rented from Sport Chalet. Slowly I'd buy my own equipment, also from them, first a regulator, then wetsuit, and so on. So even if Sport Chalet might have lost money on the rental, those rentals made a lot of big dollar sales for them.
I appreciate that and thanks for the insight on REI. Plan is to stay independent, hopefully the channel can grow to the point where I can live off this.
I gotta say as an outdoors person I'd be delighted to be transferred from DC to Grand Junction. The fact so many didn't want to go makes one wonder.
They ended up keeping a west office out there and then having HQ in DC where they could probably do face to face. Sounds like a good solution.
@@njerseydavid I love it.
@@njerseydavid not if you are working for the blm- you are making a good wage, have job security, and are surrounded by our glorious public lands.
@@njerseydavid that is exactly my point- these aren't outdoor people, they are career buerocrats. I'd rather the BLM be staffed with outdoors types.
Great update to start the season off. There will be some REI shopping going on here over the next few days and I will make sure we use your link.
Big thank you for all the support!
Thanks for the news!
Cashless entry is a practice restrictive of people's freedom of choices. Reportedly millions of Americans don't have bank accounts so it's unthinkable that this many Americans could potentially be turned away from national parks because they can't pay in a cashless way. Some blog writers argue for free entry. That point might have been valid before 1950. Now national parks get 14 million visitors from other countries every year. It would be difficult and costly for parks to differentiate between foreign and domestic visitors.
Well, I think it could be free for everyone, just like our roads and infrastructure is free to visitors. Or even do what some museums do and have a "suggested donation" for entry but allow free entry if you choose not to. I think there's probably a good solution here from some smart folks. The idea that people are told to leave because they want to pay cash seems insane to me.
@@Hikingguy Thanks for your response :)
I don't have any statistics but it seems that a lot of countries don't have the culture of tipping or donating so a box of "suggested donation" might get donations from mostly Americans. National parks are funded by American taxpayers so it seems reasonable to infer that the privilege of free entrance should only be applied to Americans or taxpaying residents in us.
Prepaid debit cards are the answer here. Walmart offers a pre-paid debit card, for example. Yes, there's usually a fee for the convenience of this service, but it's probably the best way for people without bank accounts to deal with cashless requirements. I'd rather that the National Parks save the fees they have to pay to handle cash.
Great news about the expansion of the San Gabriels protected area. I wonder if they'll ever re-open the Angeles Crest Highway! Any news on that?
Yea no idea it's taking forever, maybe this summer?
SF Bay Area has the Bay Ridge Trail! Great to hear Denver is doing it as well!
Great spot - love the info
Thank ya!
Love your hiking news updates. Thanks so much!
nice vid thanks
fyi - the Mt Charleston area has access problems from last year's hurricane and flooding. Some trails, and parking lots are not expected to be open this year.
Thanks for the update, will check the alerts before I head up
Love the video! Thank you for sharing the information with the world ❤
Almost at 100k remember like yesterday keep up the great work 👍👍
Thank you!
Love it! You've got the best hiking guide channel on the Tube, Cris.
Do you have a guide on "Resupplying on the JMT?😉
I can help you with that if you want to bring me some food over Kearsarge in August.😂
Thank you and whoa! We should catch up before you do the JMT. I know you left you're info, I've just been slammed with "work work" and "fun work" but will reach out, we should do some kind of collab, could be fun.
@@Hikingguy Hey...no worries! I've been exceptionally busy too. We stretch ourselves pretty thin. When you're free....reach out and we'll figure something out.👍
Thanks for the great info Cris! Your videos are awesome and have really introduced me to so many great hikes. Much appreciated!
I'd love to know a good source for maps like the ones you have behind you in this video if you have a link...
Thanks again! Keep 'em coming!
Thank you! And those are printed USGS topos - store.usgs.gov/maps
@@Hikingguy Thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to provide so much excellent information. I always enjoy your content.
Thank you!
I hope that the national parks lose the lawsuit in a massive way!!!! refusing cash (which is a federally accepted legal tender) is 100% UNACCEPTABLE.
Agree, but you have to admit it's pretty crazy that it cost $40k to deal with cash at Death Valley and they only took in $22k in cash. Seems like it could be easy to solved with a machine that accepts cash or something. There's got to be a clever solution here, I'm sure other businesses have figured this out.
That's wild. 🔗

I notice you included a brief clip of Danny from Mediocre Amateurs climbing the mountaineer route on Mt Whitney while describing recent deaths. Danny was not one of those fatalities, correct?
Sorry for the confusion, just wanted to show what it looked like and that was a recent video (and I'm a fan of the channel) - as far as I know those guys are good
Great Job Cris 👍
You covered tons of news items on this one. I won the High Sierra Loop lottery twice, and both times the park cancelled the permits since the camps were closed due to snow. Since then I've moved on to other things, but might try again in 2025.
Yea it looks pretty incredible - good luck in the lottery
great news update. thank you.
fantastic content...thanks
Correction on Mt. Charleston, the South loop and Trail Canyom access to the peak are closed, and will remain closed for the year according to rangers due to damage from Hillary storm.
Wish they would be more clear about it.
Closure map shows it open:

And no mention of closure on the official page:

What are you using to view the snow maps??

Wholesome content. Thanks again (y)
Wow I thought the misuse of the word wholesome was finally cured. Bummer
@@PMurray2694 Same could be said for punctuation. Bummer(.)
Great updates. Appreciate what you do. I’m terrified of snakes so on that front I will miss the winter hiking season.
Thank you!
What's the deal with biking the Rincon to Redbox trail? When looking it up I only find OHV type info. Are permits required? I know that area burned in the Bobcat fire in 2020 but I'd think by now that trail would be pretty nice for a long day. I did it from Monrovia Park in 2018 and would love to go again. I never had a permit, I just rode up a trail.
I'm not sure, you might want to reach out to the Lowelifes trail crew, they've been working on the San Gab trail. Would love to MTB that road at some point.
Tha.
How do you see Snow maps!???
th-cam.com/video/NroE36SpnVU/w-d-xo.html
👍😊
National monument expansion is worse for conservation. National Forest is very very rarely approved to be sold off or developed. Turning it into a national monument means building roads, paving roads, building bathrooms, parking lots, etc etc. It would have been better to designate it "Wilderness" instead, but politicians only care about the money tourism brings in
NPS is a terrible government agency.
California pretty soon will charge you for every breath you take 😂
2024, no reason to carry cash.
