*Long time no see Doom fans* 😁 This is one topic I wanted to do for a few years. Now it's done. 2 Hour Lore Video on Doom Eternal Ancient Gods th-cam.com/video/jKxUJoSR_X4/w-d-xo.html
I love the original Doom and Doom 2. I also loved the horror feel of Doom 3 was it? The newest games have amazing gameplay, music and all but they moved away from fighting against hell which narratively weakens the series.
Trip down memory lane. I was in my teens and doom 2 was out. My first jump scare in a game was from a pinki deamon taking a bite from behind me. That bite sound coming from total ninja silence right behind me made me jump right out of my chair!
Tom Hall had some great ideas, but they were a little too ambitious for the time. If Doom had been made in the late 90's rather than the early 90's, I'm sure Romero would've been much more open to his concept, as it would've been easier to implement since the technology would've been more advanced.
from the story's posted over the years there was a lot of goofing off in the office i think all the other guys did not what to program all that shit in the game and just knew it would be a hit the way it was lmao
I disagree. The ideas presented in doom bible resemble in concept games like System Shock which was released in 1994. Also the ideas from it were reused in Rise of the Triad (released in 1995) which Tom Hall worked on. I think it comes down to the philosophy John Carmack and John Romero had about the games at that time.
I love Doom, and still play from time to time. I also read the Doom Bible and a lot of ideas were great. But I understand why they created a simpler shooter. The same happened to Quake. It had ambitious ideas also, but also turned to a generic shooter. No disrespect for the games, since a really liked them back in the days.
I think there are plenty of good ideas in Tom's book to re-do a version of Doom with that stuff integrated into it. The secret exits and passages only visible with that xray vision is pretty good. The demon armor is a good idea also. I'm sure a modder out there can achieve something close to what Tom envisioned for Doom and make it anyway. Tom would prbly help out who knows. I'd love to play that version.
Here is some other facts about the planned characters. Thi Barrett ended up in the Rise of the Triad video game as well as Lorelei Chen which was changed to Lorelei Li and Taradina Cassatt which was changed to Taradino Cassatt. Also in the movie Doom: Annilation, actress Jemma Moore plays Private Li Chen.
I just had a thought: Could Buddy Dacote be the original Doomguy? Cause both him and Doomguy were sent to a planet for showing up a superior officer, only Doomguy was sent to the UAC on Mars for *assaulting* his commanding officer after he refused to fire upon unarmed civillians
In a lot of ways, at least atmospherically, I always figured Doom 3 to actually be a kind of Doom remake of this early concept, with the names and registration numbers filed off.
While I like some of the ideas, your average home PC in 1993 did not have the processing power to implement all this, when most people were using a 386 or 486. It's ambitious I'll give him that. If say these ideas were implemented into Quake when most people had a pentium 90 would have been more feaseable.
Yeah I know about that quote. But that's just his preference. Many FPS games out there have great stories. I enjoy games more with a good story because I like history. But when you just give us a basic wall of text for an ending, it shows the little interest you have for it. Perhaps they just wanted to focus on action as all the story elements from Tom would take too long to implement/too hard maybe.
@@AcidGlow In essence, they cut the development time in half with this decision. Also, since they did not have to cater to actual locations and visual storytelling, they could go nuts with the map design. I would've preferred a DooM with an actual story, but... heck, I don't really like this one either. So the story we actually got was sufficient. Also goofy. But Tom Hall's story pitch is endearingly childish at best. The new DooM story funnily enough follows the same principle. The story is there, but it is still goofy as hell. Sometimes there is no need for a story. A DooM action-rpg on the other hand, with elements from this pitch, would be actually godsdamn sweet. I mean, I see there is talent there, so Mr Hall could've gone crazy with story in an action rpg. We got a shooter. And we talk about it since decades now. I think DooM is good as it is. Especially since Brutal Doom.
Tom Hall seems like he understands how the military is structured unlike Romero and Carmack. Looking back at the sprites I will to this day never understand why the Doomguy never used a rifle as a marine when his player model clearly has one. I will say though I prefer the lone marine survivor in the final release instead of convoluting the game with 4 different characters. It gives it more of a player connection and for what little the original story is in the classic Doom games, it is very fascinating with all of the crazy shit going IE Deimos floating over Hell.
I'm a big Doom fan and how the lore turned out but at this point I got used to Doom's more grim yet lighthearted tone. I think much of his ideas weren't quite possible at time and would've necessitated a CD-ROM. I still imagine a Doom in the Quake 3 engine though.
Love the video can you do Captain Carter,She Hulk,Endo/Meifeng,Heart-Shaped Herb,Super-Soldier Serum,Golden Sentry Serum and Infinity Formula from Marvel Comics
I'm glad half-life exists simply so we wouldn't have shooters scrap their stories out of fear of limitations, nowdays it's ironically the contrary with people wanting more control in shooter games and not be flooded with the same war game stories lmao

I wouldn’t mind if they used this script for a Doom movie
Yeah, right?
I'm writing a treatment to send to Bethesda. I bet it'll go nowhere but if you want you can read it when it's finished
@@uggostinko6914is it done?

Tom definitely had good ideas. I'm glad they didn't get implemented though.

2016 and Eternal introduced a multiverse so Tom's version could have been one of the universe's.
This all sounds good but I cannot imagine how they would have pulled this off in the 90s.
Well they didn't

I’m glad a lot of these extra ideas never made it through. I like the originals just the way they are
This sounds like it's a potential doom mod, most specifically *doom* plus?
Doom Delta already incorporated much of this actually. Specifically the four player characters.
In a lot of ways, at least atmospherically, I always figured Doom 3 to actually be a kind of Doom remake of this early concept, with the names and registration numbers filed off.
Also, Doom Delta is the mod you are talking about. ❤️
Doom Eternal is conceptually, if not in content, the game that Tom Hall wanted.
What's up Acid!! Been awhile, glad to see you're back to DOOOOOMMM!!
This was something I held off for 2 years. Finally got around to it. 😁 thanks for stopping by Sam.
I wouldn't object to this getting made.
Maybe as a "spin-off" to the main series.
If doom bible was more used for dooms creation i think half life won't be special and still be called a doom clone if even existing...
I still play this game from time to time :). Also the old school doom guy is my Xbox picture lol.
I still play some retro games too. Friday the 13th being one of them.
If we ever get a DOOM Remake, it would've been cool if they followed a similar beat to this. But changing some things
How many of these are still canon?

John Carmack has an infamous dirty quote, but I can see why he and Tom would clash over what Doom should have contained...

Something tells me Lorelei could be Crash 😆
Doom Zero?
Sounds like Tom was an ideas guy. I can see why they dumped the Doom Bible and Tom. Especially if Tom managed to typo a ll.
Wow that's interesting
