We have a family tradition that each kid picks out a new ornament, and we get a family ornament each year. I keep each kid’s ornament’s packed in their own box when we put everything away, and when they move out, we’ll give them their own box for their Christmas tree. My parents did this for my siblings and I, and it’s always so special to see all of the old ornaments from my childhood with my kids picks.
This was something my parents did for us too. Not only was it sentimental, but it was also practical because as a college student I didn't have money to be buying decorations so I already had some!
My parents did this exact same thing for is and now I do it too. So glad to hear this is not just our tradition. I love this tradition. Still have my childhood ornaments and they go on.
My husband and I started collecting Christmas ornaments on our honeymoon 25 years ago (Nov 9th). When we go on vacation we get an ornament. We now have a travel tree plus our traditional tree. One of my favorites is from Estes Park, Colorado from 2003. Clear glass ornament with cardinals and winter trees. It’s so beautiful.
I love watching you and your family. I love Christmas so much. A few years ago, I stripped my tree of the red ribbon and balls and large snowflakes. I decided to do a Glory tree. (I am a Jesus Fanatic!) I did all the tree in gold and I have never taken it down. It has birds, crosses, all kinds of gold balls and ornaments, trumpets, musical instruments, etc. The tree has solid lights and twinkling lights as well. It is my night light in the living room. I am known for my decorating so I think you would love it as well.
my favorite ornament is a crystal Hummingbird for my dad. It's become a symbol for him within my family since we lost him to cancer 3 years ago. Christmas is hard without the loved one's you've lost but its important to honor and remember them and my favorite way to do that is with an heirloom ornament
One of my trees is food themed! I don't have children, I just find food ornaments hilarious and fun to have in a tree. Not only do I have a taco ornament, I have a taco food truck ornament (everyone thinks it's hilarious!). Still looking for a good burrito ornament and a tamale ornament to round out my Mexican food collection.
We didn’t put our tree up until Xmas Eve and would sit and have a drink as the children decorated. The pictures we have of that few hours showing the tree decorated a third of the way up, then half, then entirely are my favorite ornaments. The activity completely exhausted our children and they not only went happily to bed, and always slept until 8 or 8:30 when their grandparents would wake them up because They couldn’t stand waiting. I miss miss doing that!
My favorite ornaments are the ones my kids, husband, and I paint each year as well as memorial ornaments for my baby and other loved ones that have passed.
It is very nice to see a simple basic decoration, very eloquent and calming. Wonderful for the little ones as well. It gives hope and inspiration to those who cannot afford or want the over the top Christmas (it is fabulous, but unrealistic for many because of time and $$$) Thank you!
I am Danish and to me it is all about memory's. My ornaments are basically the same every year. From my childhood and up to now 50 years later. It tells my family's story. We all have ornaments that represents us. Our hobbies or personality. Ornaments that are old, a couple of new ones, homemade and we have a little picture of the family members who have died. That way they are still with us. And it is a real tree. Always! Merry christmas.
Love your home and tree. I recommend getting a real tree at least once. We had a family tradition of going to the same tree farm each year with our 4 kids. It was so much fun walking around looking for the perfect tree. We had hot chocolate while we waited for our tree to be cut and bagged and viewed the farm's Christmas village with trains and lights. My kids are grown now and they still say that is one of their favorite childhood memories.
I’ve bought one decoration or set every year and added to my collection. After 40 years you can imagine that I don’t necessarily use them all each year now. For me our tree is about honoring the time and progress and increase of joy. I change it up with different ribbons or beads but the memories in each decoration are precious. Now my grandkids get to enjoy the planning, stories and place items thoughtfully on our tree. It’s delightful 🎄
My parents have a musical nativity scene that recites the Christmas story from when Angel of the North appears to the shepherds. They bought it for their first Christmas as a married couple in 1987 and it’s been out every year since. It’s always been put at a level that we could play with it and play out the story ourselves with the figures. I absolutely adore it
My Father loved everything about Christmas, so each year we would go to the city to pick out a new set of german handmade glass ornaments for the tree. I have one or two of those ornaments in my collection now, and they are as precious to me now, as they were then. Every year I change my theme, and I am not past putting food ornaments in my tree, I feel doing something that is fun for the kids (or big kids) creates the best memory. This year, my husband has won me over, after decades of hiding ornaments in the back of the tree, we are doing a Star Wars theme... May the force be with me! 😏🙄
I collect old world ornaments. They are the old fashioned looking glittery ones and they make so many to choose from. My family picks a new one each every year and I love that they have small tags that talk about the object and the meaning it has.
I just love the Balsam Hill trees! Bought one 2 yrs ago and think it’s the best tree ever! This year it will go to my sons new house and I will do a smaller one. Thank you Sharrah for the great tips!
I have never had a plastic tree. Here in Austria, we put up the tree in the evening on the 24th of December and it’s usually up until around mid January.
Well, I don't remember all our ornaments, because last year they were all packed away in prep for a major move! So unpacking all the ornaments and decorations will be like another Christmas day! I am trying to decide where to put the tree, and maybe even get another one! So much fun! Love your home and your decorations!
Great tips....but too early for Christmas! Have never had an artificial tree. There's something so magical about picking it out and having the amazing smell all Christmas long.
This year my theme is what I call Nordic, lots of natural (almost white), touches of red...nothing shiny, plenty of felt ornaments...strings of distressed (rusty) metal and wood stars and beads...popcorn strings also fit...an old gold (not shiny!) folder paper star as a topper...and red/white wrapped (thanks Ikea 😁) gifts below...loving your and your mum's Christmas videos, tfs 💕
Did the same star last year from Hobby Lobby! It's a wall hanging, but with a square dowel that fits right into the tail of the star and some zip ties, you can create a great tree topper. I painted the dowel green and zip tied it to the trunk. Didn't move all season and if you do it, put it on before anything else. Super easy!
Every year my kids each pick out a new ornament. One that represents something they loved or an accomplishment from that year. We have hello kitty, ballerinas, tractors, dinosaurs, pizza slices, animals to represent pets we've had and so many other things. It's an eclectic mix, but they are all my favorite because they represent so many sweet memories with my kids. ❤🎄
Aww I had hello kitty on my tree as a kid (still do but it’s hidden). My mom did the same thing when my sister and I were kids. Just telling you, it makes Christmas decorating special to them. My mom and I are so close and decorate together every year.
Same here! I thought they would want to take their ornaments when they moved out, but they wanted me to keep them on our tree. Each Christmas, we have each person talk about their ornaments, the memories etc being told & passed down to the 8 grandchildren. Traditions carried on.
Every year our kids picked out an ornament that they liked…so my tree is full of barbies, Arthur, Barney, Harry Potter, Batman…cartoons etc. I love it. But the best thing we do every year is the Christmas pickle. Santa hides the glass pickle on the tree…then Christmas morning…the kids have to find the pickle. In the beginning, whoever won got a sharing gift…the pickle gift used to be a family movie and treats etc. Now my kids are 27 and 28…since they’ve been teens…the pickle is a hilarious competition…and the pickle gift is usually cash. It’s the funniest thing…and the best part of Christmas morning. (When the kids were small, the pickle was placed in the easiest spot…it’s green obviously…so it blends in like Where’s Waldo. Once they hit their teens…that pickle is hidden in the hardest spots of the tree.)
Your “Christmas House” is stunning! I live in a 1920’s house and all the woodwork and doors were dark. Just as you did everything is painted in whites and I love it! It was so fun watching your family help decorate.
Your tree is so calming to me . Even though my life has changed dramatically and I miss parts of my old life with my ex husband,I know once I get my own place, I am going to do this style off tree . I love how it isn’t over loaded . It’s right up my alley. . My fave ornaments were shiny brite vintage ornaments . .we had a completely vintage tree. . The garland , tree topper , ornaments are all vintage. The only new things were the Christmas lights. And the pinecone ornaments that I painted the tips on were new . The hardest thing for my ex to pick out was the tree because he always picked out a tree that was too big .
My favorite ornament is floppy disk with little mice hanging on it. It has “Santa’s Secret Files - 1998” written on it with “The Nice List”, “The Naughty List” and “Mrs. Claus’ hot cocoa recipe”. My dad and I love tech so the floppy disk reminds me of him. Our tree used to be decorated really tacky and when I got into high school my mom started decorating our tree with more of a color scheme and sophistication. My sister and I loved it but still wanted to display some of our tackier ornaments from our childhood like the one I mentioned above. Now we have large garlands in our entryway and hallway leading to our bedrooms. We decorate them with our childhood ornaments framing the walk in view of our sophisticatedly decorated tree. We love it. A perfect blend of memories and design. Old and new.
Nutcrackers are my favorite ornament and decor. Of course other than the ornaments that my husband and I get each other instead of buying gifts. (We can buy ourselves gifts anytime). These ornaments are really special and thought through. It’s really fun to try to outdo each other 🤪
I love our yearly family ornaments created custom at the local Christmas kiosk. Started with a ceramic snow-man family (with everyone’s name engraved and the year as well) for my twin daughters’ first Christmas and tradition has carried on! Love your theme! Simple, elegant, with just the right amount of fairy lights and the perfect golden star atop the tree!
It's very interesting how you and your mum change over the years the percentage ball rules ;) I rewatched all of the design sessions xmas videos...First it was 80-20, then 70-30 and now 60-30-10 😁
We have a tradition that every year we get one of those cheesy picture frame ornaments with the year on it, and we take a picture in front of the tree and put in in there :) those are my personal favorites. Also, my cat partakes in the pictures lol. I'm excited to see how our little family ornaments will evolve through the years.
Just found Kinwoven! Love your families’ passion for Christmas decorating! I usually do 4 trees. The past few years we have gotten a real tree for our living room. It’s so amazing!! The process and memories are wonderful! It is a little more challenging with lights, but worth it. We water ours every day and basically have no shedding! We designed a tree waterer and it works great! It is basically my Rustic tree then I have a kid/fun tree that’s red and green, a flocked with light blue, and a skinny tree in my dining room that’s traditional! Love the organic look also!!
Beautiful! Just stunning. And it’s always so great to have loved ones help you. Makes it more fun and less time. I wish your family a very blessed Christmas.
SO beautiful Sharrah! I agree about the fairy lights. Used those last year. I have a very unusual tree, a very sparse -very few pine needles on branches. LOTS of room to show off ornaments. Many are vintage, and the theme is birds, bird nests, pinecones, berries. (no children so many of the ornaments are glass and even from the 1920's and 30's). Can't wait to get it out this year. When putting it away the branches just fold up and I slide it into a closet. Easy to get it out and put the ornaments on. No assembly.
we have a family tree that has all our names on it. We have been doning that for 15 years and counting. Even when my kids moved out they still met up with us to get the ornament. I love that its a tradition that will keep going even after we are gone.
My favorite ornaments are the family ornaments it a mini fireplace with stockings and our names we get a new one when a new member is added ❤️ love watching our family grow
Thank for all the great tips! Love your new trees! I have several themed trees. This year I’m adding a tree; “ Childhood Memories. “ It will have all the home made ornaments our son made as a young child.
I love the felt ornaments on your tree. My theme for my tree is nostalgia. I had it last year but I bought another set of old-style glass ornaments. My parents were given a couple of this style when they got married. I remember them as a child and of course I liked to stick my finger in the middle of them and I broke a couple. But I still love them and my parents even bought me some hand-blown glass ornaments for my tree.
Thank you! I love your trees. I like all the natural ornaments, and the garland . I never thought to put fairly lights on.? Wow how did I miss that one. I have been watching your Mom for a long time. It will be fun to see what she does different. Your family is adorable. Babies make Christmas so much fun. Your home is you. I didn't think i would like the stripped wood, but it is gorgeous. See you next time. Joyce
Nice trees, the animal ornaments are cute.🤩 We invite our grandchildren over to decorate our family tree. They have so much fun. We tell stories about the ornaments. Some are heirlooms and some are handmade by them or us. We have a lot of Hallmark ones that were our Mom's...some are quite unique. We put the breakable ones at the top of the tree. This is an enjoyable tradition. (They also help us undecorate and put them away as well.)😃🌲
Helpful tips, Sharrah! The only misery that I do is how I store my lighting strings (in small circles), that's why every time I feel overwhelmed when detangling them. But I'll give your method a shot this year, and hopefully putting up the lighting becomes more fun and thrilling than a pain.🎄😄 Thanks for sharing us your lovely ideas.
We were married at Christmas. Needless to say we have a tree dedicated to all of the ornaments we got and get for anniversary gifts. We have a "toy" tree with all of the ornaments that were tied to gifts. My favorite is the vintage candy cane ornament from my great, great grandma.
When our first granddaughter was born, I started the tradition of giving her a Christmas tree ornament each year. I have continued as we were blessed with subsequent grandchildren all 15 of them! 😀 My thought was that then when they leave home and begin having their own homes they will have a great start on their collection.
My tree is going to be simple too! It is a green tree and I am so hapoy to have this video to refer too! I can't believe how Sawyer has grown! Days and years are just flying by!
Thank you for sharing your beautiful home! Love your tips, especially the one for wrapping and storing lights. My favorite ornaments are the ones my son made in school year after year. Two of my favorites are a reindeer made with pipe cleaners/construction paper and the other is a round ornament with his little handprint. I use a lot of the nature/Scandinavian inspired Christmas decor in my home too and my sons little ornaments go so well with the whole look.
Your home looks beautiful Sharrah! I grew up having potted Christmas trees every year. My father planted the trees later in our yard, lots of memories. We have a fake tree for Christmas in my home but we try to buy real every other year. You can't beat the pine smell of a fresh Christmas tree, Love it! All of my ornaments unique favorites I have collected over the years. My mother every year gave us a box for Christmas of ornaments she would find through out the year. I do the same for my son and they are hung on the tree as well. Our tree is very eclectic. If I had to choose one it would be the vintage German "Partridge in a Pear Tree" Resl Lenz glass ornament I found years ago. I'm looking forward to more Christmas videos! Thank you for all your tips, I'm excited to decorate!!
Sharrah, I think your decision to go more natural is lovely! When my children were toddlers and we had little to spend, I sewed calico fabric ornaments to decorate our small green artificial second hand tree. For garland I popped popcorn and strung it on red threads with button ends. I made a star out of card board and tin foil shiny side up. The ornaments were washable and tiny hands were always exploring for them. It was a safe child tree and my mother in law loved it. Now my kids are grown, the grandkids are grown up middle school through college. I have a few of their old ornaments and they make it on the trees once and a while. But my favorite Christmas decorations stay out all year, they are the kindergarten handprints on burlap in red and green framed in Black frames. One for each child, three all together. Time flies. And these are the best of times for me, raising my children and my favorite time of the year is Christmas. Merry Christmas!
Absolutely love your nativity theme this year! I have 5 grandchildren and give them donuts, tacos, hamburgers, ice cream cones for their own bedroom Christmas trees! Such fun🍩🌮🍔🍦
Your tree looks beautiful. I have ornaments I've collected through the years from places I traveled and got as gifts and just ones that I liked, such as lenox. I love traditional colors. Red, silver and I tuck in creams and gold. It looks beautiful. The ornaments have sentimental meaning for me.
Omg one word Gorgeous !!! You nailed it Sharrah . Sawyer is getting so big. Glad you are having a wonderful time with the in-laws too. XOXO Mary Ann in Tx.
You’ve inspired me to investigate buying twinkle lights! I’ve never seen them in stores where I live so I’ll have to try online options. My favourite ornaments are blown glass balls that belonged to my grandmother (they’re probably 80+ years old) and the clear glass angels I gave my mother one year, purchased with babysitting money.
This year I am going for a classic Santa Claus theme. I have collected vintage ornaments and can not wait to see it all come together. Lots of red (both shimmery and matte) and clear ornaments. I never thought of adding fairy lights to the tree. I may end up testing that out. Thanks for all the tips!
My favorite ornament is a Waterford crystal ornament that my husband and I bought together at the Waterford factory in Ireland. We were on our honeymoon and it is inscribed with the year we were married. We have been married 28 years.
We do Disney trees! We go to Disneyland annually and have been collecting ornaments for 12 years now! We out grew the one tree, so we have one in a front window and one in our living area
Your tree is so simple and beautiful… i love the uniqueness and the theme of it. Your videos are always so helpful. Our theme for this year is Florentine good. I’m not quite finished, so we’ll see how it turns out 😬🙏🏼
Sharrah that was awesome! That was a lot of good helpful information for those of us like myself who are a little challenged in the area of decorating. 😉😄😄😄. thank you. 🥰
Sooooooo beautiful.... what a lovely relaxing home....lovely decorations and gorgeous trees and the best ingredient of all at Christmas... a child 🥰 Love to you all and your sweet little doggie ❤️❤️🌲
We have a family tradition that each kid picks out a new ornament, and we get a family ornament each year. My parents did this exact same thing for is and now I do it too. So glad to hear this is not just our tradition. I love this tradition. Still have my childhood ornaments and they go on.
I am pregnant with our first and I love this!! Thank you for sharing, I’m definitely going to make this a tradition!
I too do this … such cherished memories and a great tradition to keep going through the generations.😍
My husband and I started collecting Christmas ornaments on our honeymoon 25 years ago (Nov 9th). When we go on vacation we get an ornament. We now have a travel tree plus our traditional tree. We buy ornaments as souvenirs when we go on family vacations. Then we remember all of our trips when we decorate at Christmas.
One of my trees is food themed! I don't have children, I just find food ornaments hilarious and fun to have in a tree. Not only do I have a taco ornament, I have a taco food truck ornament (everyone thinks it's hilarious!). I saw a burrito ornament in world market the other day

Sharrah I don't know how you do it but you seem to become more beautiful each year. Blessings to you and your family!
Must admit I did love the beauty of your house before…so charming and enchanting! Now it’s a typical home but so glad you’re happy with your design!
Absolutely gorgeous natural, organic and very simple design, ...love every single room of Christmas Trees...etc...Beautiful...
Hello how are you doing
Sawyer is standing! Well done little man! What a fun Christmas this will be for you all xxxx
You look soo much like your dear mom!! When u got to the top!!! I got teary!!!
Joyce
Nice trees, the animal ornaments are cute.🤩
We invite our grandchildren over to decorate our family tree.
I love a simple tree also!when my children were small, I always had a real tree but living in a condo, now it is faux and I love it!!!
Watching this gave me the same cozy feeling of watching a Hallmark Christmas movie! Love this series and your trips are sooo good!
So beautiful! I would also love to see how you and your Mom decorate your kitchens at Christmas.
We were married at Christmas. Needless to say we have a tree dedicated to all of the ornaments we got and get for anniversary gifts. We have a "toy" tree with all of the ornaments that were tied to gifts. My favorite is the vintage candy cane ornament from my great, great grandma.
Beautiful. Really gives off the Christmas spirit.
When our first granddaughter was born, I started the tradition of giving her a Christmas tree ornament each year. I have continued as we were blessed with subsequent grandchildren all 15 of them! 😀 My thought was that then when they leave home and begin having their own homes they will have a great start on their collection.
Love the new house colors. It’s beautiful.
Hello how are you doing
My tree is going to be simple too! It is a green tree and I am so hapoy to have this video to refer too! I can't believe how Sawyer has grown! Days and years are just flying by!
Hello how are you doing
LOVE the colors and Nativity Theme! Blessings to you and your family!
Thanks Stacy!
I am so NOT ready for Christmas but I see you and your mom won't let it go.... I cant wait for Christmas to be over so we can get to real deco
Love it!!!!! Thanks for the tip on adding the mini lights 👍🏻. I will absolutely do that this year ☺️. Enjoy the day!🎄
Hello how are you doing
I've got 2 lovely Balsam Hill trees and although they're expensive, they are worth every penny
Hello how are you doing
Absolutely love your nativity theme this year! I have 5 grandchildren and give them donuts, tacos, hamburgers, ice cream cones for their own bedroom Christmas trees! Such fun🍩🌮🍔🍦
Your tree looks beautiful. I have ornaments I've collected through the years from places I traveled and got as gifts and just ones that I liked, such as lenox. I love traditional colors. Red, silver and I tuck in creams and gold. It looks beautiful. The ornaments have sentimental meaning for me.
In my home we always put the tree topper on last. It was saved as a special moment and it was really special if you got to do it:)
Great decorations, good having the wonderful help
You are so creative and inspiring
Love to watch your family
It's gorgeous, Sharrah. Can't wait to see the rest of the house!
Hello how are you doing today
I have had that tree topper for the last couple of years and just LOVE IT! I add picks around it and it is stunning!
Omg one word Gorgeous !!! You nailed it Sharrah . Sawyer is getting so big. Glad you are having a wonderful time with the in-laws too. XOXO Mary Ann in Tx.
I have two favorite ornaments.. one of my sons first Santa photo. The second is this hand on a plastic ornament for his first Christmas 🎄
Thank you for the fairy lights tip, I can’t wait to try it!👍🏽
This year I am going for a classic Santa Claus theme. I have collected vintage ornaments and can not wait to see it all come together. Lots of red (both shimmery and matte) and clear ornaments. I never thought of adding fairy lights to the tree. I may end up testing that out. Thanks for all the tips!
I love my Cricut I use mine to make labels and t shirts and this year I am making personalised baubles for Christmas!
So nice to see a tree that is not over done. Well done!
My favorite ornament is a Waterford crystal ornament that my husband and I bought together at the Waterford factory in Ireland. We were on our honeymoon and it is inscribed with the year we were married. We have been married 28 years.
The dog!!! I'm obsessed with the dog rubbing himself all over the rugs 😆😍
Thanks, Sharrah, I had actually never heard of the 60-30-10 rule before (or I had forgotten or missed it). That's a great tip!
Love all yr Xmas videos. Simple yet elegant. Best wishes to you and your family.
This is a wow united decor and congrats for your new home color ''palette''. Love it!
Absolutely love your decor 😍 I got the star today because I loved it on your tree! Love the nativity inspired Christmas decor so much!
Excellent video and a beautifully decorated tree! Well done!!!👌👏🎄
Hello how are you doing
Love this design! It’s so warm and relatable!
Hello how are you doing
I make hand made gingerbread ornaments. The favorite for me. Thank you for the video.
Love how light and cozy it is 🌲
My favourite ornaments are some porcelain snow flakes I bought at a garage sale!
Hello how are you doing
We do Disney trees! We go to Disneyland annually and have been collecting ornaments for 12 years now! We out grew the one tree, so we have one in a front window and one in our living area
I love your home and tree! I am doing all white with feathers. I am so excited.
Your tree is so simple and beautiful… i love the uniqueness and the theme of it. Your videos are always so helpful. Our theme for this year is Florentine good. I’m not quite finished, so we’ll see how it turns out 😬🙏🏼
I collect hand made ornaments that someone else created, vintage preferably, so my favorite is a hand made hot air balloon made from an egg 😁
Hello how are you doing today
Your decor this year looks awesome. Very good tips. Thank you for sharing.
Truly blessed to have a beautiful house like that. Mele Kalikimaka!
Sharrah that was awesome! That was a lot of good helpful information for those of us like myself who are a little challenged in the area of decorating. 😉😄😄😄. thank you. 🥰
