Steve Winwood. Mulit-instrumentalist and soulful singer. One of the greatest British blues rock pop artists ever. Was in Traffic, Blind Faith, a long, successful solo career. In the R&R Hall of Fame. Worth diving into his catalogue, fellas.

The singer is Steve Winwood, at about 16 or 17 years old. Spencer Davis is quite a bit older, guitarist. Steve's brother 'Muff' Winwood on bass. Peter York on drums.
Formed in 1963 when Steve was 16 (b May 12 1948). Last big hit, 'I'm A Man' in 1967 covered by Chicago on their first album 'Chicago Transit Authority'. Both deserve a listen.

Steve Winwood is an icon of icons. He was famous by 14 yrs old, when he joined this band. As a teen American Blues musicians touring in the UK would hire him to back them. He'd been playing piano in British pubs since he was 8 yrs old, with his dad and brother. He a multi-instrumentalist, legendary singer and has written some incredible songs. He was in a supergroup, Blind Faith, with Eric Clapton & Jimi Hendrix sought him out to play on Voodoo Chile with him, and Jimi wanted to be in a band with Steve. He's worked with everyone & is universally respected. His bands are this one, Traffic, Blind Faith & a huge solo career in the 80s where he won a few Grammy's. You probably know the one with Chaka Khan, 'Higher Love'. Keep digging down the hole with Steve. Love you guys.

I highly recommend hearing Steve Winwood in the super group, STOMU YAMASTA'S GO. The band had 5 members ... GO means Five in Japanese. All of the 5 were between bands. There's Steve Winwood on vocals and keys, Al DiMeola on guitar, Michael Shrieve on drums (he was the drummer for Santana at Wookstock and Santana's first seven albums). Klaus Schulze was from the Kraut Rock scene, experimental electronics. The fifth member was the guy who organized this band ... Stomu Yamashta. He was a highly regarded percussionist and composer ... including Japanese theater.
They put out 2 albums, and Steve sang on the first as he ventured off on his solo career. I highly recommend the song ... CROSSING THE LINE ... the 7:08 version Live from Paris.

Steve had a lot of hits in the 90's going solo. Check out Dear Mr. Fantasy when he was with Traffic.

Not sure what year this was but Winwood was basically a kid here…as he was when they recorded ‘I’m a man’ and ‘give me some lovin’. Incredible musician. Good call on the Ray Charles influence…that is undeniable. There was a rumor that Jimi Hendrix wanted to ask Stevie to join his band but was afraid to ask. There is a clip of a Mitch Mitchel interview where. He says ‘any time, any place we would have jumped at the chance to have steve in the band!’. Paraphrasing …but what a compliment. Check out steve’s work with traffic, blind faith, solo….oh and the live-in-the-studio hendrix jam ‘voodoo chile ‘ (steve on hammond, jack casady on basss)

"Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" was a hit for Bessie Smith in 1929. She dropped it two weeks before the Wall Street Crash signaled the start of the Great Depression, giving the song greater cachet than it might otherwise have enjoyed. PS. For another Steve Winwood jam, check out Traffic "Freedom Rider".

So, you know, Steve Winwood is a big part of traffic. You guys remember your review of low spark of high-heeled boys? Also, he's the voice of blind faith when you're listening to the song Can't find my way home. You need to do a review of Give me good loving by Spencer Davis group
