Finally!!! A 5 string reviewer that plays the B! I've seen 5'er reviews that never, EVER touch the B. I can get pretty much my desired sounds out of the upper 4 strings. Let's face it...on a 5, it;s all about the B! Well done. Plus, "Just The Two Of Us"...perfect song to display the tone.
Just bought a Sire V7 Vintage yesterday. I play mostly punk but learned jazz bass coming up. Got this for the great value, and for the look. As for tone, I feel that pedals have come such a long way that you can get any tone you're looking for with the right gear.
An excellent review, thank you. I wish more people would review bass guitars like this instead of just slapping the hell out of them...what's the point!
Grest review Ben mate! Covered all the bases with tones with slap and pick work too - just what working bassists want to hear. Sound quality is great too - these seem like cracking basses for the price range, they retail at £450 in the UK, but sound like a bass costing 4x as much!
I like this good review ,I've seen one advertised (used BUT LIKE NEW) and It's not far away, and this review is TALKING ME INTO BUYING IT. Why Can't more active Basses have the switch to passive, and do we know the string spacing at the bridge ? ( I believe it to be 18mm) , Talking to bass players on forums It's like dealers and some manufacturers specs miss this out and or get it wrong, what ever your preferences are for a wider or narrower sting spacing when your moving on to a Five or six string 1mm between strings gets multiplied and thus determines the width of the neck and could make all the difference to the player so it would be nice to see this at a glance,
I wish there was a more uniform listing of specs across manufacturer websites. My personal preference is for narrower spacing, but I know people who like 19mm on a six string. To each their own.
I have alder 5 2nd gen. No crisp sound like this, just dull. I've tried to boost bass and treble, nothing. 1gen alder sounded much better with alnico magnets. Any suggestions my friend please?
Thanks for watching. The low b is solid and well balanced with the rest of the bass. It doesn’t strike me as, “OMG, you have to hear the low b on this bass,” but at the same time, there is nothing about it that is deficient. It just feels and sounds like the rest of the bass, which is a good thing.
You can definitely play out of the box, but chances are it could Be better. But since you ask this question, you might not yet know what you quite want from your setup.
Good question, Hetal. My sense is that the fit and finish on the Sire is better, but I prefer the wood selection on the Yamaha. I also really like the Yamaha neck joint. This is really a scenario where I recommend you check out both instruments and see what speaks to you.
@@soundslikeben thanks alot!!! I don't wanna seem greedy but what about also throwing sonally in the mix?😂 Like they both have a PJ setup 🤷🏻♂️ on passive how well will they company
@eddieferrell3276 Good eye. I don’t remember why that was temporarily like that, but it is not a factory problem. They come with all saddle screws and springs.
Great question! I personally prefer the wood selection on the Fenders, but they are nearly 3x the price of the V7. Electronics feel evenly matched to me.
I’m not sure, as I don’t have one for comparison, but Sire has just announced a new addition to the lineup, the V5 series coming in April, which will have roasted necks and lighter weight woods. They will be passive.
I have not played the Schecter J Plus, but I am generally fond of Schecters. Moving to this bass from the J Plus would be a fairly lateral move unless you are specifically trying to add a low B, and your money may be better spent on saving up for a different style of bass (like a P), other gear, or of course lessons. :)
Schecters usually have 24 frets which is awesome not sure if yours does. I feel schecter and sire are the underdog bass companies that make the best Basses at the best prices. I have a schecter omen extreme and while I don’t like the look very much, the sound is purely excellent.

What stands out to me is the great feel of the bass. Neck width and string height make it fast and easy. Thanks for posting the review.
Now I really want to play some metal and noise rock with this thing. The aesthetic mismatch would be glorious.

Congrats on the new bass!
I wanted to pick up this bass but was concerned since I planned to play rock. Are you satisfied?
That burgundy colorway is phenomenal! I almost got one in that color, but found a significantly less expensive one in red.
An excellent review, thank you. I wish more people would review bass guitars like this instead of just slapping the hell out of them...what's the point!
Best review on this bass!
Thanks, Roepesh!

The burgundy finish is a beautiful choice of color.
Hey Ben, how does this compare to the Fender Player Plus 5 string? Im trying to decide which to get! The Fenders on sale and is only $200 more.
Thank you! This is very helpful! You sound great!
Thanks so much for the kind words. Glad it helped.
Would you recommend this for top 40 music more on the pop side?
Hi! thanks for the video! Is the bass balanced?
No
The bass had pretty substantial neck dive. With that said, I’d buy one again.
very good review, thanks!
Thanks, Majkelmajczi!

Would this be a good bass for gospel and shout music?
Yes, of course, most gospel bass players I’ve seen play either a Jazz styled bass or some boutique bass.
I have alder 5 2nd gen. No crisp sound like this, just dull. I've tried to boost bass and treble, nothing. 1gen alder sounded much better with alnico magnets. Any suggestions my friend please?
Fresh strings and a lower setup are a big part of that sound. For EQ, cut the mids a little and boost the treble and bass.
@@soundslikeben Mids to be on like 30, 40 %? Thx my friend.
What's the song that starts at 4:18?
Thanks for the review btw
Just the Two of Us - Grover Washington Jr. It’s a classic early Marcus Miller track.
Oh of course it ! Thank you. I had no idea it was him
Nice bass, with a lovely finish. What's your opinion about the low b ?

Do think that the vintage version of the v7 would fit your « requirements » on the rear pickup?
I think the upcoming V5 is more likely to capture my preferences, although I do think the V7 preamp is pretty awesome.
Just ordered one. When you talk of setups, what needs to be done? Also does it mean I can’t play right of box ?
You can definitely play out of the box, but chances are it could Be better. But since you ask this question, you might not yet know what you quite want from your setup.
@@core_fin thanks.
Good answer, @coreldan
Great sound but I'm sorry about weigth and anoying neck dive...
it can be solved by changing the tuners to lighter ones. For example Hipshot ultra lite.
How well would this compare to the Yamaha BB 434? Purely in terms of quality, not sonally
Good question, Hetal. My sense is that the fit and finish on the Sire is better, but I prefer the wood selection on the Yamaha. I also really like the Yamaha neck joint. This is really a scenario where I recommend you check out both instruments and see what speaks to you.

Hey I noticed that you're missing a spring saddle for the e-string ?
@eddieferrell3276 Good eye. I don’t remember why that was temporarily like that, but it is not a factory problem. They come with all saddle screws and springs.
Is this good for punk ?
Great sound
How good are they compared at Fender Elite and Ultra? cheaper price...
Great question! I personally prefer the wood selection on the Fenders, but they are nearly 3x the price of the V7. Electronics feel evenly matched to me.
@@soundslikeben Good ti know. I have bought one and I should get it tomorrow. The alder and natural look nice
is it lighter than the first generation 5 string?
I’m not sure, as I don’t have one for comparison, but Sire has just announced a new addition to the lineup, the V5 series coming in April, which will have roasted necks and lighter weight woods. They will be passive.
Sounds Like Ben sounds great. V5 is jazz type bass as well?
@@ecedorsay Yes
I read that it is a tiny bit heavier
should i sell my schecter j plus 5 bass to get this?
I have not played the Schecter J Plus, but I am generally fond of Schecters. Convincing sound...
fi rst of all its 20 frets not 22!!
Doh!

Yes. It would do that no problem.
