- Well, with only a week left to go before the UK 2024 general election, which of the relevant* parties' manifestos is best for transport? We'll get them up side by side and have a close look at what is promised, how it compares to previous years and what it all might mean for the future.
Transport is only one part of the picture, though - the most important stance of any party is its position on social issues, in particular on issues for the most vulnerable groups in society. Why? Because these tell us what is in the heart of the party and the lens through which it will see all other issues. So we'll end by looking at the stance of the parties on one of the most important issues of the day: trans rights. And the result will tell us all we need to know about which party will be best for the country's future.
*The Scottish Greens, SNP and Plaid are relevant, sadly there's no time to include them. Meanwhile, if it's blue, it sucks.

Excellent coverage, thanks for that and highlighting the social issues & thanks for not voting Labour 💚
Has anyone considered that the labour manifesto name is a summary of how much they will invest in the UK, ie spare change?
Louise has committed to immediately commence the electrification of the Leeds to Hull Line. Let's see if this happens to check them out?
Zak Polanski would be a great choice to invite onto your podcast to set out the Green Party transport policy.
The Government should ban commercial airflights for internal journeys.
Don't blame you for not covering the conservatives. A manifesto that includes the phrase "Reopen Beeching lines" is obviously not serious.
(Then again, Labour's main policy being Pot Holes doesn’t come across as serious either.)
Zero carbon flight? If you want to travel without, you know _burning fuel_ then you have to switch to nuclear propulsion. Its great to see the Lib Dems commit to invent in research and development! Quite a lot of funding will be required, of course, just staggering amounts of money, both for the reactors themselves and for all the new industry and infrastructure. But just think of the payoff! Carbon free flight with practically unlimited range! The airlines will spend much less on fuel, im sure theyll love that enough to stomach the dramaticly higher purchase price of aircraft that carry less passengers. Hey, theres the reduction in demand for flying right there! Not only will the airliners be cramming less seats into a given size fussalage, but people are strangely reluctant to ride with fisson.
Oh, if only there were some way to harness the power of the atom in a remote location, then transfer that energy to the vehichle that carries the people!
I was v happy to see the lib dems actually say HS2 since I have to vote for them to try and kick to tories out of my seat.
I'm trans and most of my friends seem to have some form of a plan to leave the country.
luckily im part french so i can get a french passport quite easily,
maybe I'll end up working for SNCF (I want to get those Intercités back!) & french breakfast is v tasty :^)
Will electrification of the railway network to match London and the Southeast be the Labour priority?
Has Network Rail decided to redesign the proposed Haxby Station to match the new Network Rail Design Guide?
Have you considered making the title of your podcast more specific, i.e., "Lefty Rail Natter"?
As you may be aware, the more mainstream podcast "Greensignals" had come down in favour of the Labour Manifesto.
Ian Warmsley is also a very knowledgeable person to talk about electrification. His article in Modern Railways on "Discontinuous Electrification" is worth giving more airtime.
The East Anglian and Southeastern are committed to level boarding. So the redundant Electrostars must be cascaded to Northern to bring forward electrification.
Is Farage coming out with the bigotry of Enoch, but he's formed his own party so he can't be chucked out of the party by a new Ted Heath?
Should Labour create an alliance between the "Operators of Best Resort", NR and the Regional Mayors.
how do you replace north of england or scotland air capacity with out overcrowding the services to london. and the iter terminal sections of the tube. with these people i dobt you could ever build any suffiently safe long tnel under the north sea. even if you restarted ferry services most contal ports have lost here passenger terminal.
yes build a new hs1 conected and britsh gauge rail yard near ebbs fleets station. the problem is that the frence tgv lines are kida full so just goinf to the existing termial just east of calais is kinda pointless more beteer rail connnect canal tansit would probably be easier to do.
Should the nation get the big builders to build council houses for council to rent out to ordinary workers?
It would be nice if you could get a Green Party leader on the podcast to explain the Green rail policy.
Love your podcast, well done Gareth. It would be great if you could get Jeremy on to explain the Independent policy on rail.
@Gareth can't help but think that you've going to need a week off after this episode made the mistake of watching two shouty little men having a go at one another on the telly earlier so only came to watch this after the live had ended ,I must say I've come to expect from you your own very definitive views on the railway and associated matters, however wasn't ready for what felt like the Manifesto for The Rail Natter Party leader G Dennis esq ,as your someone who spend a great deal of time extolling the virtues of all types of gender,I do wonder about the use of Whelks is this not prejudiced to the crustaceans in the community ?
Have another beer I think you deserve it have a good week off and I'll see you after all this cess is over 🍻
You may be aware, during the road expansion era, Transport Minister, Barbara Castle, delivered the Humber Bridge
It would be great if Louis could deliver rail electrification for the North, in particular on the Leeds to Hull Line.
I am with you on deep scepticism for the Lib Dems, also due to the coalition years.
Unfortunately, they seem to be further left than the current Labour party without having really moved. Terrifying stuff.
We have given the NHS to the likes of SERCO, Sodexo and G4S. We can't do anything because we now don't own the assets! Ha Ha you've been stuffed!
According to experts the materials for batteries are largely under the control of China. It's important, therefore, to increase rail electrification in the North, to match London and the South.
The Leeds to Hull requires to be electrified to match London, i.e., between Liverpool Street and Southend.
Anything we build will be privatised and given to the Tories. And we can't then re-private, because it costs money that we don't have because we have given the assets to the Tories!
What is a Labour Welk? Are they no go Joe's? We can't do anything because we are under the spell of George Osborne and austerity?
Is "nationalise" a naughty word, says the BBC, Andrew Neil and Rupert Murdoch!
Will the new Feeder Station at Hambleton serve the OLE of the ECML and the Leeds to Hull Line?
Has the Haxby Station been redesigned to match the NR new design guide, as you recommended?
Should Labour reopen social clubs, they really make a difference?
220!!!! cross country time :]
unless it is a pary your to ill disopsed to can you do a review of what the last governent did to the industry.
Just voted green 👍
My labour MP is great as far as they go, but I'm still not voting for her unless she leaves the Labour party. Granted Starmer is doing his best to get her to leave.
Between Brexit, COVID-19 and HS2, I really feel like there's a conspiracy of silence where people just don't want to bring up the bad decisions that the Tories have made or any meaningful way to correct course
When will Labour commence the West Yorkshire rapid transit system?
second term i think
Will the plans of the first line be completed and funding agreed during the first term?
Labour has committed to a high performing railway, with electrification.
Three scenarios of TOTEX (CapEx + OpEx) are considered with a fully costed budget over thirty years for various routes.
1. Status Quo - diesel hybrid or hydrogen fuel with no electrification.
2. Full electrification with the use of existing and new EMUs
3. Partial electrification with battery charging and new BEMUs.
The scenario with the use of existing and new EMUs is outright winner on most routes.
Is this why Labour has committed to bring forward electrification of the North Wales and the Hull line's
Will labour cascade the redundant high milage Electrostar trains to the north as the South gets new trains to achieve level boarding?
This is a great podcast but it's a shame you're so politically biased. I mean, to not even review the Tory plans? This is such a turn off.
I'm not interested in reviewing the plans by a party of fascist wreckers. Nobody rational should be voting for the Conservative Party or any party further to the right of it, so their plans are irrelevant. This isn't political bias - it's basic literacy about what is good and what is bad.
