  • This one has been in the pipeline a while... Should we reopen the full Waverley Route from Tweedbank south to Carlisle? No! We shouldn't!
I'll explain precisely how we shouldn't, using maps, showing the route that any new Borders Main Line should take, and explaining how and why you'd choose between the two available options. I might even tell you how much it would cost!

I remember going for a drive in that part of the world a couple of years ago. Coming out of Hawick heading back towards Kielder and getting a jump scare at seeing the Pacer at the heritage railway in the middle of seemingly nowhere.

If the Carlisle avoiding line could be reinstated, it would reduce the amount of new right of way required and allow facing connections to NCL, Cumbria coast S&C and WCML south of Carlisle.
It would be wise to optimise Cumbrian Coast for freight, to allow the WCML to shed through freight off the cumbrian WCML

The major projects division of network rail should be renamed the Electrificatio Commission and given a clear aim to electrify 100% of the rail network by 2039 to match CORE of India.

The Indian Government CORE programme will complete 100% electrification of the Broad Gauge in the next few months.
In addition, the Indian has a major programme of new lines.
Will the UK Government reinstate the 20km of disused line between the huge conurbations of Barnsley and Manchester, via Penistone. Will this help resolve the likley congestion north of Birmingham with the curtailment of HS2?
    Will the uk govern

15:40 the big problem with the CBR scheme is the difficulty and expense of relocating those towns and cities into a straight line

In addition, the Woodhead Route can support Felixstowe and Harwich and Immingham freight and container traffic off the ECML at Doncaster, the MML at Sheffield and WCML at Manchester.

Question, would the Caledonian Sleeper train be rerouted to this way instead of going down the current route via Carstairs?

    • @RoamingAdhocrat
      @RoamingAdhocrat 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

the sleeper is electrically hauled south of Edinburgh and Glasgow. would be good if the New Waverley route is electrified from day 1...

To an extent it's understandable why there's so much focus on reinstating passenger services on existing lines/rebuilding existing alignments but there really does need to be a lot more consideration of building new lines. EWR is a good example since the original Bed-Cam section was mostly across open countryside while the new route will serve at least one major new town that's developed since the original route was closed.

How would this compare to buidling an entirely new 300+ km/h high speed line connecting either Glasgow or Edinburgh to HS2? I know it would be much much more expensive, but wouldn't you get a similar allevation on the WCML for more freight, while also providing much improved travel times and capacity for long-distance services?

It would be interesting to see a similar analysis of re-opening the line between Wath, Barnsley and Manchester. Unlike the Borders huge populations live in the Hemsworth, Wath and Barnsley and Glossop Mottram and East Manchester.
The reopening of the woodhead line cannot be easily dismissed due the tunnel having high voltage cables, as National Grid have stated that the tunnel can still be used for trains.

plus the main rail yard for greatere edinburgh on thr birders lines just south of the junction of the east coast main line so as many frieght trains as possible should be routed across the pennine up the ssettle and carlise libe and the up the borders line so it doseny block eaither the west coast or east coast mainlines.
