Hi friends, if you are new here, welcome to the sunflower family, I’m Holly Auna. We do a “Monday crochet” live stream every Monday at 5pm ct followed by a new video! On this channel, we do crochet, gardening, vlogs, renfaires, DIYs, thrifting, silly hair things and so much more! 🌻🧶👩🏻🌾🪴🐸
My mum has one of those crochet keychains. It’s not really for crocheting, it’s more for knitting. If you’re knitting on the go and you accidentally lose a stitch, the hook is really good for picking it back up. It is cute though
I just put it on the little string that hangs up that connects it right before you wind it. I found that the bigger the yarn ball is, if you don't put a rubber band or hair tie or something on it and will fly off.@@Kristiekins2

FYI ekectric ball winders do wind very tight. if you won't be using the yarn in a 2-3 months then you should wind it a second time without the tension guide. otherwise the yarn will get stretched out of shape.
So my experience with the electric yarn winder is that the rubber band is there to add a firm starting point, yes it takes a little more effort to remove the yarn from the spool but you end up with a nicer ball of wool at the end, it just takes a little more practice to remove. I would recommend not frogging with the spinner you can't ever get the speed of frogging consistent enough for the winder to be fun, I'm always terrified of breaking it. And the motor is deliberately weak so when the yarn snags it stops rather than breaking any of the mechanism that's why turning it off and on again is necessary to restart.
Maybe you move the rubber band up the top of the thing? Because as you wind the yarn and centrifugal force decides to kick in and try and make your yarn ball fly off at mach one, the rubber band being at the top with its grip might stop it is the idea? So you can wind as fast or as slow as you want without fear of airborne yarn
I have this same winder but I don’t have a rubber band with mine. (I bet I lost it) However, I try not to hold my strands tight and it doesn’t get stuck if you find the “magic tension.”
I use a japanese knot bag for when i walk-and-crochet, it's easy to sew, open for yarn pulls, and you can stash your project in it when you're done for the day. And the little crochet hooks--i can't speak for those sizes, but i LOVE tiny sized ones for when I'm tatting with shuttles without hooks. I usually keep a keychain with a couple tiny crochet hooks, mini scissors, and a tin for my sewing needles. Very convenient!
I am a center puller, and what anti-center pull need to understand is than yarn barf is not knot ! That can become knots if you are pulling like crazy, but otherwise it's just loops around loops, so super easy to master. Or you just wind the yarn barf around the skein, and no knot either
I am a center puller too. I actually think I would have quit crochet if center pull was not taught to me. Compared to non-center pulling? Yarn barf might as well be my best friend.
I thought the same thing!! I think that doing this would help the electric winder to keep better, consistent tension (which would also probably be looser).
Absolutely I would LOVE to watch a video of you just winding and cataloging your yarn. Sounds relaxing and informative and a fun thing to watch while crocheting. Also, since the last part of this video you put out, I have started on a baby blanket (for a friend that isn’t even pregnant yet but they’re trying lol) and an afghan for my mom. I finished a granny square runner for my mom as well but I wasn’t doing the double crochet right. I don’t know WHAT I was doing but it’s so tight and even after blocking it, they curl up. So it’s definitely a learning curve but a good and fun experience and I am now obsessed with looking up patterns and also living in yarn stores. I love your channel and your little community here!
I bought the wooden yarn holder/spinner with the magnet that you had in your last video and I LOVE IT SO MUCH!! I litereally can't imagine crocheting without it now!! TY so much for your videos!!
Just a warning… if you wind cakes that you aren’t going to use for a while, it stretches the yarn a bit. It won’t feel or work up the same as before. It’s ok to make cakes if you are going to use it soon. I learned the hard way when coming back to a cake a year or more later 🙃
I think that those mini little travel hooks would be soo cute as like a zipper, or to clip into a zipper if you have a bag where you keep crochet things, or yarn or anything like that! I think it’s way cuter as a decoration then actually using them
The fanny pack would be perfect for anywhere you're gonna be in line for a long time. Like disneyland. You could finish single skein projects by the end of the day. Like a scarf, hat, appliques, granny squares. It would be great for that
Oh my god why haven't I figured this out yet. Putting on the plastic thingie for safety eyes is such a pain in the ass for me and I broke so many finger nails because of it lol. Thank you so much for the advice!
Omg I thought I was the only one who knew that! It makes it so much easier to pry them off as well. Though I have kind of just given up on safety eyes in general.
Love to watch you! You are so much fun and bubbly, with a great personality! No, not being weird, could be your grandma. You should be a teacher! And yes, I would watch you enjoying winding all your yarn. As Cynthia said, very relaxing!
I absolutely feel you with the tension ring. Granted, I've been crocheting for about 25 years so I have my tension nailed down. I could absolutely see them being great for beginners though!
I have two things I use all the time for crocheting on the go. One is my yarn bag. It's a drawstring bag that can fit a few different sizes of yarn balls and when I'm ready to put my project up I just open the drawstring bag and put my hook and project in it. It's small enough that I can pull the drawstrings together and have it hang off my wrist while walking or in the car. The second is a similar interchangeable crochet hook but it uses a twist and lock mechanism so you don't need the tool to tighten it. What I love about this is that when I'm done, I can take the hook off and turn it around so the hook goes into the handle and I don't lose it. There's also a thread cutter attachment (and it's double sided) so I can have the thread cutter on the other side and have it inverted so it doesn't accidentally catch on something. The hook is the Twist-n-Lock hook by Susan Bates and it only comes with 6 sizes (you can buy them individually as sets of 2 or as a complete set with a carrying case, which is small enough that it can fit in the yarn bag or my purse) If I'm working on a specific project, I will just carry the handle with the hook size I'm using. Super easy way to have ergonomic hooks on the go. It is a bit pricier than the set you got off amazon though.
Center pull. lol But I also actually quite enjoy untangling things so the yarn barfs are cool with me. lol That little fanny pack would be a huge upgrade from the plastic shopping back I usually work out of.
If the keychain hooks had some sort of telescoping mechanism that locks into place to make them longer during use and shorter for the keychain, I’d be down for that! I’m only ten minutes in and have already subbed and ordered the yarn winder. You’re gonna be dangerous for me, girl! 🤪🤣
I haven't tried it yet but I've seen tips mentioning you can use a screwdriver with removable bits to secure safety eyes. Just use it with no bit and it has the same hole as the tool.
I've just gotten a dinky lil crank winder for the first time and honestly I am in love with it! I really like the physical action of making the yarn cakes, and it makes it a lot washer to finally unravel garments that I like the harn of, but not how it was put together. The manual-ness makes it so easy to start and stop, slowdown, all that good stuff
For yours and Tilly's safety I would recomend not putting safety eyes on toys for Tilly. When Tilly plays with the toys and cheqs on it, the safety eyes witth break and she could eat the peices!❤
Oh wow I didn’t think about that! I thought we were supposed to use safety eyes for pets/kids etc I never thought about them breaking! I’ll go back to using yarn eyes for her toys 🧶💖 thanks!
I've never thought of this but if I had eyes on a toy I made for my dog which I would never because I don't want my hard work to be shredded the eyes would be his first target. He goes for eyes, and ears on his toys. I only make wearables for my pets meaning my dog but not cats though could possibly. It's just they're more fussy with that though my dog runs to my mom now when I try to put clothes on him. Used to put up with it and now sad when I do it
I think most safety eyes even specify that they are not appropriate for toys for children under 3, because of the small but disastrous possibly if they break or come out.
@HollyAuna it's a bad name. I think it's similar to why safety razors are called safety razors. Safer than the old alternative (straight razor) but not the safest thing.
The keyring of crochet hooks are great for weaving ends of yarn in. I never thought of using them as crochet hooks. Also for knitting you can pick up dropped stitches.
I bought those crochet hooks on a keychain as part of my "apocalypse purse" setup. I love them. I have used them to test yarn and the constant jingling i find soothing.
Okay, ma’am, I love your vibe and the mushroom decor! Like we should totally be friends 😅 anyway, keep the sunshine and mushroom aura, because you’re killing it and your videos just make me smile 🖤
Rewinding the skine into a cake or a ball really helped with the yarn barfs and tangles. Instead of threading the yarn through the holes, guide it out of the zipper if you know you'll want to take it out if the fanny pack.
There’s a great video by The Snugglery on here for your electric yarn winder. It really helped me smooth out some of my initial user errors. Now I love this thing
So glad I watched this video 😂 I literally added those tiny crochet hooks to my cart yesterday! Also I will now be Investing in a yarn winder 😂 -other Holly
Because of you I ordered the yarn magnet thingie!!! I AM IN LOVE. It took like 3 weeks in shipping but it was SOOOOOO worth it. I adore it and will always have it on my desk!!! Thank you!!!
I was just recommended your channel from my friend, and I love your content! I am excited for your next live crochet with me, you've inspired me to pick my sweater back up!
Omgosh this comment made my day welcome to the sunflower family! Tell your friend hi and thank you for recommending my channel!!! I hope to see yall on the next live! 🌻🧶
I love the idea of a granny square walk LOL! I also really like the Red Heart Granny Square yarn and have been playing around with different patterns/designs that work with it, so I'm excited to see your take 🙂
I'm so jealous! I tried and tried and tried to get the granny square yarn to work for me! I would basically have to drastically change my tension/go up and down in hook sizes - by two or three letters - for every round! It's truly turned into my arch nemesis - good to know it does actually work for some people.
The "electric" yarn winder looks amazing!👍 I have a manual winder I got for UNDER $10 and it's pretty great compared to not having one but I have to stop to untangle my yarn pretty often (depending on the yarn). Btw, that spring thingy... it's for tension control. Thanks for the demo!👍😊
The kind of crochet ring you are using is designed to allow the yarn to be hooked through a few ways. Amazon shows a generic way but other designs (the amazon ones look like cheaper knock offs) allow the yarn to also go through the end parts. By changing where it is on the ring it allows you to have looser or tighter tension based on your personal preference or if you want/need tighter or looser works.
These Tool videos are so good! Please do more of them, and yeah, I'd watch you winding your yarn while talking about each yarn. I think that would be interesting. Especially if some of the yarns are big box store yarns and you can let us know about washing and durability of those yarns. Anyway.... liked and subscribed.
The safety eye tools are awesome. They come in different sizes, so if you’re using the larger mm eyes, you can easily find one that will work. I have a set of 2 and I use them all of the time. Total game changer.
I have the three little crochet hooks decoratively hanging on the shoulder strap buckle of my handbag. Total attention grabber and has picked up more than a few dropped stitches for my knitter friends and myself. 10/10 over here.
Liked and subbed...love your backdrop! Love your furgirl! Those hen earrings are fantastic! And love your cuteness! All wrapped up in interesting crochet content! Lol! Hi! From Newfoundland! Ps...I came here from the video where you were visited by the Cat Distribution center ...welcome Tilly!
My gran taught me to hold my yarn the same way you do, but after seeing the rings in your last crochet tool video, I decided to get them. I'd been looking at the rings for months, but they were priced so low that I had thought they had to be just gimmicks. They felt a bit awkward at first, and I wasn't happy with the tension until I tried using one on my index and one on my pinky to slow the pull slightly and spread the tension out to a closer approximation of what I'm used to. With a little fiddling to get the placement and fit to my liking, I was able to get the tension right and now adore them; they are so easy to slip off whenever I have an interruption and back on when I'm ready to start back up without having to wind the yarn around my pinky and index finger and redo till it's comfy. Now I can just slip them on and pull the feed from my yarn spool to my pinky to tighten the yarn or between the pinky and index rings to loosen the yarn, and I'm ready to go in a couple of seconds. If you try the new ring from this video with a second ring on your pinky, it might make all the difference for you. Thank you for sharing by the way. They work nicely for knitting too, and I'm hoping that - on my next project (knitting a two-tone double sided bucket hat) - using two sets of rings pinky/index finger and pinky/middle finger will help me keep the colors straight without getting tangled. Crossing my fingers. (I learned Continental style knitting, so crossing fingers on my right hand😂.) Thanks again. I definitely enjoy your videos and am so glad I subscribed. (My apologies for the multiple edits; I seem to lose my ability to spell and form complete sentences after midnight.🤦
If you slightly disregard the yarn feed holes in the fanny pack and instead, keeping the skein pulling from the center with the yard pulling out toward where the zipper close ends (only pulling the zipper almost but not completely closed so the yarn can be drawn with as little friction as possible) you can still tuck the pieces your working on in the mesh pocket for brief interruptions, then unzip the top and tuck it away with the yarn when you are ready to stop. Actually doing it that way, you might be able to quickly tuck your crochet hook into one of the holes (standing upright) when you need your hands free and easily retrieving it when you're ready. I may be wrong, but to me it looks like you might even be able to fit hooks with ergonomic handles through the top holes.
Oo, I have the crochet key chain. I too keep it on a carabiner with my keys and my Loops. Haven't actually tried to do anything with the tiny hooks, though... I see them more as a way of displaying my particular geek-ness. Good way to say "I crochet" even if I don't happen to be wearing anything I've made. That electric winder looks like so much fun.... I had fun watching you wind yarn! Also a very good tool for anyone with fatigue issues. And if I want to put safety eyes on anything I definitely need a tool for it... That last bag looks good too. I have several drum-type bags, but they can be a pain to carry around. One that leaves my hands completely free, however...
I think the rubber band is meant to go above the yarn being wound around so that it doesn't go flying off maybe? Then you take it off when you're ready to take the skein off :)
That’s so cool! I don’t know if you saw the video I released today, it’s all about crocheting in the car. In that video I review an expandable crochet bag!
I got some crochet rings because of your last video and i like using them but it made me realize how much i put my work down in the process of making it haha
Right!? That was kind of my problem with them 😂 I feel like I’m lucky enough to find my hook when I come back to my project, even if I just run to grab a glass of water. The ring is a whole other thing.
Hi. Just came across your channel. Love your excitement. You pull skeins from the outside? You silly. If I do from the outside is how I make the barfs from the skein rolling. I look forward to Binge watching you
The tiny crochet hooks are useful if you get a pull on your sweater. These hooks can help you pull the strand to the inside leaving the outside of the sweater looking great.
I use a drawstring pouch to crochet on the go, it easily opens and closes and naturally has a small hole when u close for the yarn to come out of, and u can hook on ur hand with the strings
Another crochet ring you should try is the fyberring, they are hand made and there’s even an option for bulky yarn, I ordered one but haven’t tried it yet because it will take 3 weeks from for my order

The silicone band is what makes sure your skeins come out in cakes better. It’s why the first one was great and the other one’s not so much.
That is exactly what I use it for 😂❤
My mum has one of those crochet keychains. It’s not really for crocheting, it’s more for knitting. If you’re knitting on the go and you accidentally lose a stitch, the hook is really good for picking it back up. It is cute though
Ooo that’s great to know!
Yes. I have a double-ended hook about the same size that I use to pick up or fix mistakes in my knitting.
That's what I was thinking, too short to be good for crochet but for repairs to occasional dropped knitting stitches they could be handy.
I tried to crochet a tiny little flower at my Dr appointment the other day. It is DEF for fixing knitting!
Yep, was going to say the same. It really easier to rescue a drop stitch with a hook, so the crochet keychain are really the right size for that.
The rubber band on the winder is what sets the height of your skein. That’s why you had a harder time getting a ‘perfect’ skein after you took it off.
How does that work? Do you put the elastic on before you start winding to the height you want your skein?
I just put it on the little string that hangs up that connects it right before you wind it. I found that the bigger the yarn ball is, if you don't put a rubber band or hair tie or something on it and will fly off.@@Kristiekins2
Im still confused 😅 i guessed it had something to do with that but i cant picture how youre explaining to use it@elsedavidson3458

I would definitely watch a video of you just whining all of your balls of yarn because I find that very relaxing

Me too and I would probably start winding with you 😊

I was just coming to comment the same thing. It’s a good idea. I might actually put a rubber band on the top of my hand winder for that purpose.

Okay, ma’am, I love your vibe and the mushroom decor! Like we should totally be friends 😅 anyway, keep the sunshine and mushroom aura, because you’re killing it and your videos just make me smile 🖤
I really love my safety eye tool! I usually use it against a hard surface, rather than my fingers, though. Glad you found it!
I use a second ring on my pinkie finger and I swear that fixes the tension right up.
Ooooh! I'm gonna try that! Thank you 😊
I love the safety eye tool, that's fantastic!
I call them balls if they have a wrapper on a skein if it's twisted and a cake if its been wound on the yarn winder
Rewinding the skine into a cake or a ball really helped with the yarn barfs and tangles. Instead of threading the yarn through the holes, guide it out of the zipper if you know you'll want to take it out if the fanny pack.
I have something like that fanny pack, and I tried going through the zipper. It messes up your yarn cause it gets caught on the teeth of the zipper.
I'd watch that. I love to organise things 😂
I would absolutely watch a yarn cataloging video!! I honestly have been wanting to do the same and would love to see how you go about that!
Because of you I ordered the yarn magnet thingie!!! I AM IN LOVE. It took like 3 weeks in shipping but it was SOOOOOO worth it. I adore it and will always have it on my desk!!! Thank you!!!
Omgosh this makes my heart so happy thank you for letting me know I’m so glad you love it!
Yes that case video idea is so good! Ill watch it
I was just recommended your channel from my friend, and I love your content! I am excited for your next live crochet with me, you've inspired me to pick my sweater back up!
Omgosh this comment made my day welcome to the sunflower family! Tell your friend hi and thank you for recommending my channel!!! I hope to see yall on the next live! 🌻🧶
I would LOVE to see your stash/organization system. It might give me the motivation to tackle my own storage
My storage is currently three lathe cardboard boxes, two baskets and about five bags 😂 I NEED to do this project lol
The place you film in your living room is so beautiful and magical 🍄🧚✨
Thank you!!! I’ve been working on giving my living room a fairy core makeover ✨🧚
I like that electric yarn spinner!
I can’t use a crochet ring either. I do want the electric yarn winder. You were having way too much fun with it 😂
This is awesome! I love these types of videos, your awesome holly!:) 6:00 I would watch that video 100%!!!
9:34 im the opposite, i think i would enjoy the little jingle sound ❤
The safety eye tools are awesome. They come in different sizes, so if you’re using the larger mm eyes, you can easily find one that will work. I have a set of 2 and I use them all of the time. Total game changer.
LOVE your videos please keep making them
I have to pull from the outside, if I pull from the inside then I spend more time on the Yarn Barfs then I do the Project. 😂🤣.
Love your videos! ❤
I have the three little crochet hooks decoratively hanging on the shoulder strap buckle of my handbag. Total attention grabber and has picked up more than a few dropped stitches for my knitter friends and myself. 10/10 over here.
Omg the fannny pack for the granny square yarn is freaking genius
I do too! Sadly I had to take it off I kept hooking it on everything 😝 but it’s super cute ☺️
I think the rubber band is meant to go above the yarn being wound around so that it doesn't go flying off maybe? Then you take it off when you're ready to take the skein off :)
I need to try that!
I have a backpack like the Fanny pack. You have a ton more storage. Love mine for traveling with my projects
That’s so cool! I don’t know if you saw the video I released today, it’s all about crocheting in the car. In that video I review an expandable crochet bag!
@@HollyAuna I did not! I was actually working on my mil's poncho while watching this one!
The silicone ring is placed at the bottom of the yarn ball base to keep the shape, below the yarn NOT under/inside the yarn your spinning. LOVE IT
I need to try it again that way!
I have one of these key chains. More for decoration really, but I have used them for quick fixes like yarn ends getting loose
Hi. Just came across your channel. Love your excitement. You pull skeins from the outside? You silly. If I do from the outside is how I make the barfs from the skein rolling. I look forward to Binge watching you
I have the same belt bag and it is my absolute favorite travel project bag.
Hi I’m new and would absolutely watch a video of you cataloging and rewinding your yarn 😂
Welcome to the sunflower family!
Hello. Just found you. I’ve used the small hooks for tatting. It works great as a tool for tatting.
My grandma taught me how to hold my yarn the same way you do. All the gadgets in the world cannot replace that.
Thank you for these videos, i bought a yarnspinner after your last one and i love it so thank you so much 🥰
omg i actually LOVE these videos and would watch every video like this and most definitely the winding yarn video! thank you for doing these❤
The tiny crochet hooks are useful if you get a pull on your sweater. These hooks can help you pull the strand to the inside leaving the outside of the sweater looking great.
Omgosh great idea !
I use a drawstring pouch to crochet on the go, it easily opens and closes and naturally has a small hole when u close for the yarn to come out of, and u can hook on ur hand with the strings
i say skayn personally, i also pull from the center but a lot of times if theres not a tail sticking out i pull from outside anyway love ya holly
Another crochet ring you should try is the fyberring, they are hand made and there’s even an option for bulky yarn, I ordered one but haven’t tried it yet because it will take 3 weeks from for my order
i would totally watching a video cataloging your yarn!
I have had those mini hooks on my keys for a year now. I personally love em
How do you recommend holding them!? Do you leave them on the key chain when you use them?
My electric yarn winder looks exactly like yours, but didn't come with a rubber band. I LOVE using it! (my cat loves it too 😁)
I love the first part and the second ❤
Thank you so much for watching!
