  • In this video i take you through the entire process of hand spooling a big international reel with 1500 yards of 80lb J braid with a mono backing to ensure theres no spool slip down the rd or worse.
    From making a wet spooler to keep tension on your line to the mono backing and braid to mono knot and finally stacking on that gorgeous blue braid Right & Tight.
    Why pay a shop to maybe get it right when you can do it yourself & have Better Than Bought🙌 and know its right for the fight💪💪

    I just put a150 lb braid on my penn 309 for fishing of the holyoke bridge for stripers and shad plus sometimes you hook onto a monster sturgeon I wish I would have known what I just learned so far my biggest striper is 50 lbs 10oz unbelievable fight when your a 100 feet off the water I lost a 12 to 15 foot. Sturgeon I played for 3 hrs then broke me off I was heartbroken. That's why I went to 150 lb test I was using 80 no more that my fish story but true !!!!!!!!!! Thank for the information!!!!!!

    I like your video nice and informative i just think you should change the rod running braid i wouldnt use that rod the wheels dont work well with braid maybe change it to a strong rod with just the holes instead of the one with the wheels would be alot better for trolling and turning youre lures will straighten up quicker

    • @Betterthanbought.
      @Betterthanbought.  24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Ya i agree most full roller setups dont work well with braid especially with the xtra wide reels. That said these rods have a different wheel setup than most so the line cant get stuck beside the wheels like most setups do. Its made/designed specifically for braided line & i have never had a single issue with any of them. We actually have a few of these setups & fish them hard. I have had them for several yrs now & couldn't be happier with them.
      There specifically setup for high speed trolling for wahoo mainly with plainers & not used for anything else. Mono is too thick for this application it causes too much drag aka line scope stopping baits/lures from diving deep at h8gher speeds. The thin braid is a must have. But to each their own my friend. I appreciate you checking out the channel. Tight lines & stay safe out there👊🙏

    I had a long conversation with the engineers at Avet and they told most of the reels sent back to them for claimed spool slipping were actually because they used mono for the backing. They recommended using tape on the big reels.

    • @Betterthanbought.
      @Betterthanbought.  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it works for you stick with it. Personally I've been there done that & wont again. Tape glue breaks down gets slimy & slippery or it drys out completely depending on brand.
      There's no way these are slipping it cant once i do respool these reels i will do a video showing how the mono takes on the shape of the knurling and makes a lock preventing slipping. The line & spool become 1 there locked together with the knurling squares bound into the mono just like 2 gears meshing together💪 Then its all held down by the braid being tightly wound over it so it cant lift or jump out of the locks. It would have to break or be able pop up & out of the notches to move at all & thats just not happening. Once you see it everything will make sense.
      Unfortunately these are a yr or more from a respool so i cant show ya 1st hand anytime soon but im sure you can picture what im saying in your head ya?
      Thanks for checking out the channel & sharing info dude. Good luck out there👊

    Hay just dig a hole in the ground and then you get just what you want tight line I own my own peen international 80stw and I used my tectonic and my was similar but it used mine in the living room watching tv and burned my hands 😂but it saved myself 60 bucks so It was worth me trying on my own the international reels hold a lot of line and it took me about 20 minutes from started too finish anyway I am planning on buying a new setup but next time I’m going to be taking it outside so I can test out the strength of my line

    Didn't see you leaving any room for a topshot or shock leader. I spooled my 80's and had to try and calculate how much braid to put on before stopping to allow a 100' topshot. In my case, I use 130' of 130# mono with dropper loops for planar bridle.

      @Iggy Focker. I kept the line weight the same. Ie 80lb braid 80lb mono. You really dont want a weak spot should you ever get spooled was my thought on it. Good luck & tight lines👊

    • @Betterthanbought.
      @Betterthanbought.  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We do it because braid is super slick and will/can spin on the spool under heavy loads.The mono bites the spool much much better especially when you really stretch it like i did here. You only need a lil under there & it takes up some room also. I wanted to do 2 reels with the 1500 yard spool so i knew i needed about a 1/2" of mono underneath to achieve that. Gives me 1750 yards of braid on each one. That's plenty. And you can do a mono topshot if thats what you like. We use wind on leaders for what we do. So its braid directly to the dacron loop on the wind on via a bimi twist for us.
      Hope that helps👍

      You can use what you'd like but this is how i spool all our reels always have always will i dint like a rushed job. Its tight the line dont dig in we high speed troll planers with these setups you couldn't possibly put anymore tension on them😅 if they where going to dig they would have & there wouldn't be a 65lb wahoo on my wall my friend. You do you, machine away my guy👍👍 ill keep stackin it on proper slow n steady👌

    Not how we do it on the west coast. Tape on the empty spool, braid primary, then mono top shot.

    • @Betterthanbought.
      @Betterthanbought.  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yaaa ppl use tape here on the east coast also i use too myself but its eventually slips especially in hot weather under hvy loads. Ill give ya the long answer.
      We primarily fish the Fl keys in 100+ deg weather so the tape melts gets all slimy & eventually will slip everytime especially pulling a #4 planer at 12-15 knots its just crazy pressure on everything so tape is a no go for me on these bigger setups.
      Imo if your reels have knurling on the spool like these pens do you will be hard pressed to find anything that bites better than a lil 60-80lb mono. You can really see it when you respool the mono will have that knurl pattern right in it making it one with the spool its literally locked together & cant slip due to the down pressure of the braid. Normally wouldn't use as much mono as i did here either. I was splitting a 1500 yard spool of braid between the 2 reels. So i wanted to take up about an inch of space to achieve that. We fish wind on leaders so no need for room for a top shot for what we do with these setups.
      Im fine with tape on smaller setups where i dont want to loose capacity/length but we're not talking half the amt of drag so completely different story. But hey if it works for you i say good enough bud👊.
      Thanks for stopping by the channel & good luck out there dude.

    • @Betterthanbought.
      @Betterthanbought.  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Downeast Tackle. Ya if we fished them hard & i had deeper pockets i deffinatly would for sure. I just pull off the top 100 yards & put a new top shot on them & get 3-4 yrs no problem doing what we do. There spooled heavier than whats needed to begin with so we can get away with it. Even with a 25% strength loss we're still beyond good & i do pull tests before each trip on them. We literally fish these bigger reels 3 weeks a yr with my family in the keys so its a lil different situation than most no doubt. I have to cut corners or i couldn't even pull it off honestly. But hey i appreciate your insight & thanks for stopping by the channel & dropping some knowledge👊
