    I hope that you all will enjoy this video! It has been in the works on and off since September 2023 and is the longest video I have made in 2 years! Today we look at the paradoxical story of the world's most famous steam locomotive: Flying Scotsman

      But City of Truro was the actual first engine to reach 100MPH.Truro did it in 1904

      I applaud all the effort you put into this. I only wish you would have taken more time for the same content. And leave the special effects transitions alone.
      I tried to play at a slower speed, but the sound became awful and the editing was still too frantic. So now I will watch your video in segments of 1 minute, to avoid headache.
      Do continue with making good content. Try to see editing as a way to put information in sequence, so we viewers can digest it. Not as a venue for showing the possibilities of the editing software. If you keep the viewer in mind, at all times, your videos will be enjoyable for a wide audience.

      Yeah, it's more accurate to say that Scotsman was the first to reach 100MPH in revenue service. Truro did it first but it was only pulling a test train, whereas Scotsman would regularly hit 100mph while pulling passengers.

    Flying Scotsman could be considered next level preservation because a lot of her parts are from sister A3s

    • @Caledonianpug
      @Caledonianpug 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @richardharrold9736Very fascinating. I heard flying Scotsman’s boiler was from her sister Salmon Trout and the frame and tender are from parts from a A4

    • @Caledonianpug
      @Caledonianpug 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @richardharrold9736 When the A10s aka A1/A3s were first build in the 1920s they did have lots of frame cracking issues to begin with so it was common to make new parts

    • @johnjephcote7636

      She had a boiler from Salmon Trout back in the late sixties. I still say that City of Truro did the ton first.

      @hiawathabeast 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      sadly, some people do.
      personally, i think scotsman's being unfairly blamed. pegler and marchington were too ambitious and it cost them in the end, remember, tony marchington was the reason why her overhaul became a debacle and cost so much money.
      pegler should've cut his losses and keep the us tour to 1969 after the government pulled their funding, but he pressed on and suprise, he's in massive debt and had to abandon his engine.
      flying scotsman wouldn't have had the nickname "the flying money pit" had her 1st and 3rd owners been more sensible.

    • @ethandouro4334
      @ethandouro4334 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hiawathabeast Kinda tells a lot about financial education in the UK tbh... Three rich people that can afford to buy an entire Engine can't even raise money to repair or maintain it. Didn't they had a company or something to sell a product abroad? Like, there's a similar story here in Brazil, about a car that bankrupt our first democratically elected president while in office, but even he got to raise funds after he stepped down and nowadays live in a very cheap town in the northeast of the country.
      Kinda sad to see this though

    I confess to loving Mallard more, but I always have a love for Flying Scotsman and its rich history. Sure we’ve had to throw a lot of money at it to keep it going, but it’s worth it to maintain the world’s most famous locomotive. Having a famous steam locomotive does draw some outside interest in heritage railways. It was one of Sir Nigel’s greatest feats, and 100 years later, it’s still a sight to behold.

  • @thesudriana016

    Wow! It's not every day we see Thomas the Tank Engine or The Railway Series mentioned in any of your videos, but given that Enterprising Engines was published the same year as the non-stop run anniversary with Awdry on board, that makes it even more special.
    While Flying Scotsman is my favorite steam engine, this journey he had is the most biggest that's ever been told with different ownerships to overhauls, etc. And to those wondering of the Gordon and Spencer rivalry, this is directly based on locomotive fact: the A4s were put on first-class passenger services while Flying Scotsman and the other A1s (later upgraded into A3s) were relegated into secondary services. And since Spencer is literally in The Great Race, you'd think he, Scotsman and Gordon would all have a three-way LNER battle of who's more famous and faster, yet he received one line and that's it!

    She's been worked like a dog, but in other ways, she's been quite spoiled. How many other locomotives would be gifted a £4.2 million pound overhaul?
    I visited the UK last summer and, en route from London to Glasgow on a budget rail service, got a glimpse (and a very blurry photo) of her idling at a station along the coast. I'd known about Flying Scotsman every since I was a young boy poring over the pages of my Railway Series collection, and seeing her in real life, even just for a split second, was magical.

    I was lucky enough as a 10 year old to be at Kings Cross station with a friend when Flying Scotsman returned to London after its none stop run to Edinburgh in 1968, we where standing right where the footplate stopped and Alan Pegler invited us on to the footplate and gave us a lump of coal and a empty Champagne bottle they also had to move the engine a couple of yards and let us stay on the footplate while they moved it .

    I used to drive trucks for a company in sheffield whos owner was a train nut, all his trucks had names of steam engines on it with the proper plaques etc, but he never had a scotsman. I remember asking him about that and he laughed at me and said thats a cursed engine and that he will never put that name on one of his trucks, Such a shame the company got bought out by Culina and they will no longer be about.

    My favourite tidbit about the American tour, is that when Scotsman was shipped back to the UK, it was thought she'd have be put onto the back of a lorry to go to the works.
    Nevertheless, they went through the process of firing her up, just in case, and.....
    She went to the works under her own power. It's just such a beautiful thing to think about.

      Required by law for increased safety at level crossings.

    Amazing editing, some of the best I've ever seen! Did you study Leo's film school guides, because it has a similar high energy feel. On the note of 4472 being to slow, its regulated that steam engines are only allowed to run at a max speed of 75 mph because modern track isn't suited to them, making the whole situation a sort of catch 22. You're being told that your not fast enough,and while you could go faster, you can't legally do it.

    Is this live or it is a normal video? I can’t really tell the difference because I 1. Can comment 2. It’s in the “videos” tab which for me on Mobile doesn’t show live things. So how did you do this?

      It is a youtube premiere! Now just a regular video as the premiere has ended

    It almost certainly didn't reach 100mph despite the LNER PR claims. There's a good chance 'City of Truro' did, though, decades before.

    The Scotsman or "Flying money pit" to some will continue for years to come now when it's been a pure case of 'Triggers Broom' there's not much left that would still be considered original except wheels some parts of it's running board and it's cab that still has "GCR" stamped on its roof, everything on her is more or less brand new and I think at one point there was a decision that if they had drawn up plans to make a new A3 it wouldn't of cost a lot more then they spent on rebuilding Scotsman.
    This is most likely why the NRM shot down ideas to put Mallard back into running main line condition as they have been quoted in saying the Mallard is the only A4 left that is close to the original design when compared to other sisters.

    Please stop saying the and thee before engine names it brakes the flow and makes it harder to listen to also with how you say about the rebuild it sounds like it only got repainted into Apple green when it was rebuilt. Also Alan went bankrupt a year after the government pulled funding (something not explained well)

    I might have enjoyed this video if you backed off the sugar a little and slowed down so a person could enjoy the narration with the footage. Not interested in listening to you!

    Whilst this was very informative, can you please slow down your speech delivery. I think you're also editing out the gaps between sentences, and it sounds rushed and unnecessary. Good luck with the channel.

    Narration on this doc is not great... speech is too quick and hard to digest... is it "AI" or someone on steroids? Pity because there is great footage here.
