  • Showing a primary triad of specialty mix colors, they are all iron oxide hue mixes. So transparent yellow iron oxide exists as a color and pigment, PY 42 I believe, yellow ochre but with a slightly different pigment treatment, transparent red iron oxide also exists and is PR 101 I think. But there is no blue iron oxide pigment I don't think. I have yellow ochre and mars yellow in my pallete, but wanted something earthy but more saturated, and more transparent and more granular and with higher tinting strength than either of those two yellow colors, and I was inspired by Daniel Smith's transparent yellow oxide color. I also really love Daniel Smith's transparent red iron oxide color, and am so tempted to buy it lol, but I'm holding myself back because I know I can easily mix a hue of it and there is no more room on my pallette for more colors. And I figured, it would be intriguing if there was a blue iron oxide, so that there was a primary triad of earthy transparent iron oxide yellow reds and blues we could use almost as a limited pallette. So I imagined what a transparent blue iron oxide hue would look like, and developed a mix to make that hue. And I also developed mixes to create a yellow and a red transparent iron oxide as hues too, all three using colors already on my pallette. This picture shows the results of those mixes swatched out. I love these colors! They are exactly my style in watercolor, bold and saturated yet earthy, and they all have some granulation, A+ lol! These colors are more examples of my build a paint concept and pallette. What are your thoughts on this process and these colors? Let me know in the comments. The blue hue I mixed off screen which is very tricky to mix so I couldn't film mixing it on camera today. Maybe I can film me mixing it later if you guys show interest in that.
