This is great I told my new bosses in my interview I loved spreadsheets and knew how to do them, now I can pretend I'm just a little rusty but fumble my way through it.
Your video was great, easy to follow and you described things well. It would be really helpful if you were able to link each of the sheets you used in the description so that a viewer could make a copy and follow along as you teach. I stopped and did my best to make them as I watched and it took a bit to do the data entry. Thanks!
Well, this reminded me of how excited I was to start learning this at school and how disappointed I was because this was never taught to us (maybe just our class) even during college days. I don't want to blame the school as I probably just had lazy IT teachers or maybe the lessons were just exclusive to top section classes, which I would find unfair if that latter was indeed the reason.
I was looking for a fixed cell reference for 30 mins, also I didn't know it was called a fixed cell reference, and I realized that there are no google sheets full tutorial that goes from basic to advanced. Ever vide that is searched under google sheets tutorial is "what beginners need to know" etc .... Thanks Man!

Question...I am making an accounting sheet that is dated. I would like to date the top of the sheet and have the date replicate to other cells on the sheet. I did a sum of the top date cell to the other cells. Is there another way of doing this? My way works but is it correct? I would love your insight on this.

There have been lots of updates since this video but I am not sure if any of them would change the subjects this video went through. The interface had some slight changes to conform with "material" design, there were checkboxes added, insert images into cells, and see history of changes in a cell to name a few that I can think of off of the top of my head.

What I really want to know is if you can make a video on how to link just an image that is saved on your CPU and that will only open on the sheet if you hover over the text it's tagged to in a cell with your mouse or click it to open. i would like to ask , i want to copy the youtube playlist to excel(sheet) , because they always delete the video, and thosse video name are gone, witch i don't know what that empty are, and can't find it back to my collection again. but after i copy and paste, they are lining at a single column only. can u teach how to do those arrangement? i have try to write the grid number in a column, ie. A6, A10, A14 but after i pull the little cross at corner , it give A9,A13, A17, then A12, A16, A20 i dun understand how it logic work, and can i just tell it what to do? to transform it?

@@mariannes.6023 Just trick Sheets and make the range one cell further down than the values actually go. Then you'll be adding to the middle of the range and it will auto expand.

Thanks for a very comprehensive tutorial. I find almost all functions and commands similar to Excel and wonder if the latter has an edge over Sheets any more.
I use Excel in my "day job" because the business world is still pretty tied into it. I get spreadsheets in the Excel format to begin with and I send them back out in Excel. Excel is better with really large data sets or some more complex operations (advanced filter being just one example).
Could you help me? I would like to input a time in minutes and seconds, and have it display in just seconds for printing. For example if I type in 0:10:06 or 10.6 (as in 10min 6seconds) I want 606 to be displayed in that cell. If yes, could you also do this with hours?

At 26:09 Isn't easier just to use this formula for the average total for D14? =sum(D12/D13) I don't understand why some use over-complicate formulas when with just a simple one its done. Unless I missing something in that case please feel free to enlighten me.
Your formula is saying "add the quotient of D12 divided by D13". The SUM functions wants at least two items to add together, but your formula just gives it one, which is the quotient of the division problem. I think you're headed down the path of how arrays work, when the function can be executed on a range, but that's not what happens in basic formulas.

Great tutorial but didn’t find what I’m looking for. My source gives me data In Minutes:seconds and but it always treats it as hour:minute even when I set the format to Minutes:seconds it just adds a :00 to the end and treats it as hour:Minutes:seconds hiding the hour. Example Don McLean - American Pie-8:33. If I put this into a table instead of the duration being 8 and a half minutes. It would automatically say that the song is 8 and a half hours long. Does anyone know how to resolve this apart from changing everything everytime I pull the data.
If you are bringing the data in with a function, how about dividing it by 60 as you bring it in? Or, if you can split apart the minute and second values, bringing the two values into the TIME function as the MINUTE and SECOND values. Just a few thoughts.
Try pointing the IMPORTRANGE function at the cells that are empty now. I would think it would update once they get values. I am working in a Google spreadsheet and before I had not viewed the formula boxes but when I went into the cell it would outline the formula, meaning it would highlight the cells that were part of the formula. I changed the view to show the formula on the top and now it does not outline that formula and I cannot figure out how to do this again. I hope this makes sense it is making me crazy that I cannot figure out what the formula is by just looking at it when I'm in the formula box but have to look at the formula line on the top and figure out which cells they are.

Great video! But I have a question. I am baffled on what formula to use to get the "difference between the current total value (of my stocks) compared to the previous day's value". What is the formula for this? Let's say C6 is the total value of my stocks. Can I see the gain/loss compared to the previous day's value in C7?
That's not it. I'm getting a message that says - #REF! error. "circular dependency detected" C6 would be equal to yesterday's results. My Schwab acct lists it as "DAY'S CHANGE".

There's really no built in way to do that. Control (whatever the Mac equivalent is) gives you a new line within a cell though, if that gets you started.

I need the colour of a whole range of cells to be changed according to the condition of this "status" cell - if one component is chosen - it should change to, say, red colour. Slnp Art It is most likely that you would still be using Excel. However, there are far more similarities than there are differences so learning Sheets would help.

Macros can't be imported. However, formulas should come into Sheets as they were in Excel. Make sure you upload it and then open it in Sheets instead of copying it in Excel and pasting it into Sheets.
It's not a one cell. Freezed area is so bigger. When I add a pie chart, it is add in unfreezes area . When I trying to move that chart in freezed area it's not moving in freezed area . I resize my chart as small size than 1cell

I have all of them sitting at a 45 degree angle. When I publish it, they are all sitting horizontally. How can I publish this with the names at a 45 degree angle?
@@ProlificOaktree File Publish to the web. And I tried it all and I get that same result. Link or embedding. Then web page and all the different options after, all the same result. On google sheets, they are on a 45 degree angle, but the published is not.
When you did the cell references. I couldn't get the number for the Operating Income. It's telling me to go to the spreadsheet settings for the calculation. I don't know how you got the number for the Operating Income.
In 17:05 of this video when you were subtracting =E5-F5 it automatically jumped to G8 and G11... how did it do that? I replicated your sheet exactly to follow along and mine when i hit enter didnt do that
My masterful editing didn't show that very smoothly. I entered the formula into G5 and hit enter. The cursor then went down to G6. Then, I went back and selected cell G5. I then took my mouse and double-clicked on the plus sign in the lower right hand corner of the cell to copy the formula down. You could also left-click the plus sign in the lower right hand corner and drag it down. Similar to what I did at 14:27.
How do you make it so the scroll bar on the right that scrolls down the rows stops and not go all the way to 500 rows? Like I am only using 46 rows but it still goes down to 500 rows.
Hello Sir! I tried to use IMPORTRANGE() to copy cell range from one file to another you have shown in this video that in the second argument of this function, sheet name is optional. You may have a Filter turned on so that marks the boundary of the range that is being filtered.

19:28 what if you share a file that references a file that is not shared or owned by the person viewing the first shared file?
The owner of the sheet being referenced has to grant permission for IMPORTRANGE to work no matter what the settings are on either spreadsheet.

The mouse pointer turns into a had if you are near the border of a cell, hold the left mouse button and move it around.

I've never heard of the cells in a formula not being indicated if you double click (or use F2) to get into the cells.

What is the formula for this? Let's say C6 is the total value of my stocks. Can I see the gain/loss compared to the previous
day's value in C7?

C6 would be equal to yesterday's results. My Schwab acct lists it as "DAY'S CHANGE".

There's really no built in way to do that. Control (whatever the Mac equivalent is) gives you a new line within a cell though, if that gets you started.

Slnp Art It is most likely that you would still be using Excel. However, there are far more similarities than there are differences so learning Sheets would help.

Macros can't be imported. However, formulas should come into Sheets as they were in Excel. Make sure you upload it and then open it in Sheets instead of copying it in Excel and pasting it into Sheets.

It's not a one cell. Freezed area is so bigger. When I add a pie chart, it is add in unfreezes area . When I trying to move that chart in freezed area it's not moving in freezed area . I resize my chart as small size than 1cell
I've been searching every where for this answer and cant seem to find it. On the spread sheet, in colum 1, I have a list of names going across the top. I have all of them sitting at a 45 degree angle.
When I publish it, they are all sitting horizontally. How can I publish this with the names at a 45 degree angle?

Publish to the web. And I tried it all and I get that same result. Link or embedding. Then web page and all the different options after, all the same result.
On google sheets, they are on a 45 degree angle, but the published is not.
@@Reaperdkms Hmmm. I don't know what you're trying to do, but maybe you could use the Share option instead and make it available as a link.

When you did the cell references. I couldn't get the number for the Operating Income. It's telling me to go to the spreadsheet settings for the calculation. I don't know how you got the number for the Operating Income.
I'm not sure, but for what it's worth, mine are set to Recalculation "On change" and Iterative calculation "Off".

In 17:05 of this video when you were subtracting =E5-F5 it automatically jumped to G8 and G11... how did it do that? I replicated your sheet exactly to follow along and mine when i hit enter didnt do that
My masterful editing didn't show that very smoothly. I entered the formula into G5 and hit enter. The cursor then went down to G6. Then, I went back and selected cell G5. I then took my mouse and double-clicked on the plus sign in the lower right hand corner of the cell to copy the formula down. You could also left-click the plus sign in the lower right hand corner and drag it down. Similar to what I did at 14:27.

How do you make it so the scroll bar on the right that scrolls down the rows stops and not go all the way to 500 rows? Like I am only using 46 rows but it still goes down to 500 rows.
Select all of the rows beneath, right-click, delete. To select them, select the whole row, hold down shift and tap the down arrow.

Is the cell being referenced in the first sheet of that file? You could just add the name of the sheet to be sure.

No, that is an array of cells being referenced and they are in the 2nd sheet of the 1st file that I tried to import to 2nd file sheet1.
