  • We finally got our first ripe fig since planting our fig tree orchard out in soil. The variety is Improved Celeste and turns out to be one of the earliest ripening, hardiest figs out there. I don't know what they had to do to improve it but they did a fantastic job. This fig tree is a definite keeper in my zone, 8b. This fig tree is growing beautifully and producing tons of figs. Best part is, it's ripening at the right time. What a great little fruit tree to have on your property! Looking forward to seeing this fig tree mature.

    Deer Net works WONDERS.
    At my old family home, South Alabama, there is a fig tree in the chicken yard that is well over 100 years old and it's still producing. It's massive. It's about 25' tall and the canopy is GIGANTIC!!!
    As a kid, we would climb the fig at harvest eat them right off the limb.
    They're so sweet, no pesticides and the chickens ate the bugs before they could get to it.
    Great video!!!!

    I see that you have a lot of weeds in the fig area! ( 5:35 to 6:22 ) and I think that's great because when I remove the weeds with all the roots I see a lot of worms so that's means the soil is moist and rich and excellent because looks fresh and so good so I decided this year to leave many weeds next to the rose plant who was so weak and is surprise me! The plant and flowers looked so very gorgeous ! weeds are different and some grow tall, I only cut them in half when they are mature.

    Hi, Mike .... I think that with the climate is some state the conditions have improved for the better, but in other places they get worse and this year here in the State of New York especially the fig trees had and incredible development this year ,large and very sweet fruit. There is a house near where I live that has a large fig tree with great fruit that nobody takes them out except the birds and insects that this year had the great feast....ha,ha,ha .... , but without a doubt that it is incredible that with the climate that is not very favorable where you are harvesting fruits and that for the care you provide to your plants is still a great achievement ......... Adios ......

    Congratulations on your first fig! Improved Celeste is one of the figs I highly recommend in colder areas. It ripens early, is prolific, and has a high sugar content. Don't worry about your deer, a few leaves will be fine and the fact that they didn't go after your Improved Celeste figs is a good sign. Perhaps you can even train them to pinch in the summer for you!

Hopefully those deer stick to the leaves and leave the fruit alone. I just posted my fig update yesterday. I've had two varieties of main crop figs ripen so far this year and should get a few more soon. Even since I recorded the video the other day I'm seeing several more varieties starting to change color so we may see more. It's amazing how fast they can change in color and size. • @MikeKincaid79

      You may not need the head start with this one. I think mine would have ripened earlier except for the fact that I didn't get them planted until late. Such a fun and rewarding variety. It just pumps out the figs. I didn't think this one would ripen either and then within just a couple days, I went from green hard figs to purpling figs that plumped up overnight and started hanging over. I was truly amazed at how fast this took place. Now that it's begun, I'm continuing to get more and more ripening at a fast pace on this tree. I think you'll be very happy as yours matures.

      Terry, I pinched off all of mine, as they got to about 5' tall, and some earlier, but that was about the end of July. Several have formed figlets, but they are not very big yet, much less looking ripe. No rush; I have dozens of figs on my two brown turkey trees, which I keep working through the winter. They will keep me satisfied until next year.

Instead of those unnecessary long rods you have to hammer and have hell removing. Its made my life easier moving my fence in just minutes with plastic push in posts too. The cheap white polywire scares them so badly I can move the solar energizer to new locations and they still snort and blow looking at the uncharged polywire I leave in place. Protects my garden. Self watering pots or shallow pans under the pot work well to keep water available to the roots.

      Fig wasp only LIVES and reproduces inside Caprifig trees. Nobody grows any of those caprifig trees outside certain places in Southern California. Our fig trees in all other states are able to make infertile fruit without pollination just not seeds to reproduce themselves. Pollination makes all figs bigger and better but we manage okay with common varieties.

      Okay, so you didn't get the bulk of the research into Deer resistance. I'll give you the run down, deers commonly do not eat hairy, waxy, sappy, or odor producing leaves. This doesn't mean they won't eat them, just means they'll go out of their way to not eat it if there is other food. A lot of fruit and nut producing trees have been selectively bred with traits that have deer resistance.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a common thought that we get lots of rain all the time but not necessarily true. We actually get less rain (in inches) than many places. We average about 35 inches of rain a year while places like New York and Alabama average 65 inches a year. The reason we are usually associated with rain is because we hold the record for more cloudy days than any other state in the union, over 200! Most of those days are concentrated between mid October and May, and it can get pretty gloomy. During that time, there is usually a light misting or sprinkling associated with all the clouds but not the downpours that other places get. During the summer, especially late summer, we actually get really dry and start begging for rain, lol.

      I know they can be nasty and have a bad sting but I've had several of them here over the years and never been bothered by them once. Maybe I'm just rolling the dice, lol. We're late enough into the year that activity should be slowing down soon and they will be hibernating for the winter. I've gone this far so I'm going to finish this one out and try to save the nest in the winter. I'll probably get rid of any new nests that form from here on out but curiosity has got the best of me now.

    Dude, fence up the place before they develop a liking for the figs man. 😅

      Forealz! That was probably their first time seeing a fig tree and they just don't know yet.

    WHY NOT PUT A WIRE OR DOUBLE WIRE STRAND OF ELECTRIC FENCE AROUND YOUR ORCHARD?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I may end up doing that. I was going for an orchard that is totally open and easy to access with as few fences as possible but I may need something before it's over. I thought about growing a thick hedge of rhododendrons around the orchard.

      RHODODENDRONS MIGHT WORK.
      I'D THINK THAT PYRACANTHA (sp?) would be more powerfully protective with its thorns. Probably any hedge with a thick, dense strong woody wall effect would do the trick.
      I think it might be necessary to choose plants that did fill-in densely and not leave sizeable holes with weak limbs.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, and that's why I'm thinking rhododendrons. The deer over here won't touch them and if you plant them close enough, they row dense. Plus they're evergreen and bloom every year. It would make for a really nice private orchard.

    Hornets are notorious of killing bees so it’s not good for you garden if there’s no bees to pollinate your plants

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Plenty of native bee species around that pollinate every spring. I like the natives because they've evolved to live together with the native hornets. They are hardy and come back in droves every year.

    Better harvest those figs. Those trees are in a vulnerable spot. Can't you put cages around them to protect them from the deer?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I could but that would cost a lot of money in cages and then I'd have to make all the cages and place them over the fig trees and then put in stakes to keep the deer from knocking the cages over or pushing them into the trees to get to the leaves and......... I think we're in a good spot right now. I know they're vulnerable but I just don't think they are an acceptable form or food for them. All summer they've been growing out there and this is the worst it's gotten and so far they've left my ripe figs alone. If this is the worst it gets, I'll take it.

    Watch out how you point your finger around those hornets... When I was a kid... I thought a hornets nest was a bird nest and I pointed up at it to show my brother and my hand got attacked by those hornets... Please do not let your kids get around them... Hornets can be deadly and they are not docile like honey bees..

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, bald faced hornets are the worst. This nest ended up getting blown away in a strong wind in October.
