you should read "no longer human" by Osamu Dazai. Its a classic in Japanese literature. It's a very sad story. Its also interesting to read up on the author of the book.

      he's osamu dazai's favorite wirter.
There is a extremely important Japanese literature award called Akutagawa Prize (his name)

Spring Snow by Mishima is one of my favorite books of all time! The first ~100 pages are kind of slow as it’s setting up all these complex character relationship, but I swear get to the beach scene and it is *chefs kiss*!
If you are interested in the women in historical japan then I think you will like it. While Satoko is not the main character, her story is what impacted me the most.
It’s the first book in the sea of fertility series, however if the ending of the book doesn’t make you want to pick up the next one it can be read as as a stand alone.
I hope you give it a try!

Oh, I just finished the Convenience store woman a week ago and it is amazing, the writing is just so great! And it's very original! Also the protagonist is so observant which was so refreshing for me...! I also like Kawabata a lot because even though his stories are slow and have sadness etc there is a very poetic feel to them but I have read only three and a short story collection. If you didn't like what you have already read though maybe it's not for you since from what I read there is the same vibe in his stories. I personally also like that he places his protagonists and scenes in very unique places or surroundings and the scenes have a film direction element.. Definitely don't try I guess Beauty and sadness, haha, I found it very slow for the most part haha... But maybe just prioritize other writers I guess there is so much to read anyways hehe..! I'm also in Japanese reading mood and I'm going to start Hotel Iris maybe today. Also Revenge by Ogawa was great, I also dont like short stories much but these were a bit of related each one with the following story which was very interesting along with her writing style. Also "In the praise of shadows" by Tanizaki is a must read non fiction short book for seeing the cultural view on aesthetics, beauty and well the role of shadows etc. Very illuminating. I also think that Tanizaki's novels except the Makioka sisters have explicit content. The Makioka sisters are completely different though and very cultural Japanese etc.

Tomihiko Morimi, Natsuo Kirinio, NisiOisiN, and Otsuichi are all authors I would recommend.
Morimi is in this weird place between literary fiction and SciFi/fantasy winning some of the most prestigious awards for Scifi and Fantasy in Japan-we only have Penguin Highway and The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl in English.
Natsuo Kirino: one of leading authors of Japanese Mystery and Thrillers in late 20th century (Her UK covers are quite alluring)
Otsuichi: Horror/Mystery author, debuted while he's in highschool-his work are often really dark where a usual premise twisted beyond recognition or unique premise from the get-go.
(Like his debut novella was about a highschooler narrating how her killer trying to hide the body)
NisiOisiN: One of the bestselling author in Japan, and a leading name among 21st century authors.
A versatile author who loves wordplay, banter, metahumor and pop culture references.
His series range from the Shinhounkaku (Fair play-based Japanese detective fiction subgenre)-"Zaregoto series" through the treasure hunt and historical fantasy-"Katanagatari series" to the anime-like bizarre coming of age merged with supernatural harem tropes and thr occasional philosophy-"Monogatari Series".

After the quake was interesting. It doesn't feel like a book of short stories in a way.
I haven't started the elephant vanishes yet. But I've heard there's a story that leads into the windup bird chronicles that has my interest.
I read his memoir here recently. It was mainly about running and how it's connected to his career. It weirdly kept my interest.

Out of the books I've read that you mentioned, I absolutely loved Convenience Store Woman, I really liked If Cats Disappeared From The World and The Travelling Cat Chronicles but I did not like Before The Coffee Gets Cold. And don't be fooled by the cat on the cover, there is a total amount of ZERO cats in that book :/ (obviously not why I disliked it but that's still IMPORTANT) (also I'm pretty sure Convenience Store Woman is the least quiet one out of all 4 of these books even though it's the only one of them that doesn't have any fantastical elements in it. it's not action-y obviously but the atmosphere of it was really fun. both the protagonist and the book itself is pretty eccentric)

Fantastic reading plans. I can really recommend piercIng as the narratorial style is basically something completely different. Theres one motive that pulls itself through the whole of the short book which is a rather shocking way of getting a Piercing. You'll probably hate the characters in the book as they are all in a way antagonists and just not nice characters. But the psychological way the main female character wishes for independence and unconformity is rather unsettling and fantastic.
I also recommend you Tokyo Love from Kawakami Hiromi. Another rather bloody and explicit tale of Love in Japan.
At last I want to recommend you some japanese light novels, especially the one for "The night is short, walk on girl"
Edit: My absolute favourites are the gruesome and low-class centered Stories of Natsuo kirino. Out is fantastic in the way its gruesome, empowers women and displays mental state. Real World is a story about attachment, murder and trying to get away from guilt. At last Teufelskind/I'm sorry Mama. This is a classic story about revenge, mental destruction of a child via an horrible upbringing and loneliness.

    • @muchuuworks
      @muchuuworks 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl is not a Light novel but sold as one to anime fans (cuz the US publisher thought it's easier to sell like that, the same with Another, Perfect Blue, Monogatari series, I want to eat your pancreas, Zaregoto series, The Miracles of the Namiya General Store, etc.)
