    I just started listening to an audiobook of Wind-up bird and so far its strangely beautiful. The narrator is great and the story though strange (just like you said 😅) is still gripping and you wanna know how all of these things will connect in the end. I also started reading IQ84 and it seems great as well. Its all thanks to you that I discover Haruki Murukami's work! 😊📚💕

      Scooby Ronnie I actually borrowed it from a friend she lend me her copy. Though I guess you can borrow it too from any local library or try looking it here (TH-cam) I mean sometimes other people upload it 😅 I hope that helps a little. 😊

      Thank you, I have just finished Norwegian Wood on TH-cam for the third time as I love audiobook, but I haven't been able to find a good recording for many others.

    Hi, I'm from Argentina and I love Murakami's books. i read them all. I feel the same as you about the windbird chronicle. I read it like 5 times, my dad gave it to me when I was 10 years old and there was no turning back.

    Great recommendations! I absolutely loved Dark Matter so if After Dark has a similar vibe to it, I'll love it as well! I read Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World earlier this month, and omg it was so good. Murakami is such a great writer 🙌🏻

      I also loved Dark Matter, but not a huge fan of the Hard Boiled audio book... Maybe i should give it another chance though, it was high up on so many other's lists.

    Wow I didn't know I needed this video, but I did! The only book out of this whole video that I've read is Killing Commentadore but know want to read all the Murakami books and the recommendations :D
    Btw, I felt the same about probably enjoying books about art/painting after Commentadore. And it's weird and I don't know why.

    YES YES YES to Kafka and Lincoln in the bardo! Kafka is 100% my favorite Murakami (so far) and I literally just read Saunders’ Lincoln in the Bardo, and I totally get the “feeling” they both have. Very... tension-filled, one where you want to know what the heck is happening and why. Two of my favorite authors. And Vonnegut. Yesssss

    I would rly like to recommend Fuminori Nakamura, by now I read cult x which reminds me a lot of some parts of 1q84, also the „side info“ you get about things in these books has a similar vibe.
    The thief has some killing commentator part 1 elements I feel like & evil and the mask is like a mix of wild sheep chase & south of the border west of the sun.
    I rly enjoyed them they give me that „Murakami feeling“ I crave ;)

    Yesss, thank you! I really want to read more Jeff Vandermeer and Imaginary Friend after listening to your recs. I also think that Ursula K Le Guin's book The Lathe of Heaven reminds me of the atmosphere in some of Murakami's books. Very surreal and like a liminal state between waking and dreaming, the book is about a man who can change reality with his dreams. Have you read it? It's one of my favorite recent reads. 💓

    I really enjoyed this video - You've given me a number of books to look into. If cats disappeared from the World is one of my favorite books! I wish it was longer and I agree that the author should have further explored it. I couldn't find twinkle twinkle on Amazon. I read my first Murakami recently: Men without Women - I liked it but there were some frustrating aspects of the stories told. That and I don't agree with the statement one of the characters makes about how Women lie all the time sort of thing. I do remember you saying in one of your Murakami videos that these sexist comments feature in his work from time to time and you too find them somewhat troubling.
    Your cats are... beautiful! I love how talkative Taetae is :)

    • @murakamireads
      @murakamireads  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Twinkle twinkle I would check out shops that sell old books! Like thriftbooks or abebooks! I don't think it's in print anymore :(
      Yes I 100% recognize some of the misogynistic and sexist comments made in Murakami books - I truly believe some of this is a translation problem (as in, something that made sense in Japanese or came across in a certain way - say, light hearted or sarcastic - comes across very different in English. The biggest translation error I can think of is Dance Dance Dance the main character is called a young girl's "boyfriend" - while in every other language he's a "big brother" character. But because English doesn't have a word like "Oppa" or "Senpai" or other languages version of this, it comes across as VERY creepy) as well as simply that Murakami is an older man who comes from a country that is still plagued with misogyny and very traditional values. It doesn't excuse the sexism in his books, but it explains them. It something that I definitely read and get upset about when I stumble across them, but they have yet to actually put me off of Murakami! I hope you still try something else by him - Men Without Women is probably the worst with seixm in my opinion just because of the nature of the anthology lol he really seemed to be writing for a male audience, not women.

      @@murakamireads Alrighty, I shall have a nosey at the websites you mentioned.
      Fully agree with you regarding Murakami's background. I can imagine translating certain phrases/words can be tricky. It actually reminds me of a book by Xinran called Miss Chopsticks - have you heard of it? It is understandable for sure, it can be deflating. As you have read all of his books, do you feel that his sexist views/comments have changed? Remained the same or appear less often? I think it was a ball call for my first book but I will try something else :)

    • @murakamireads

      @@sophiestelfox7544 Hmmm I honestly would have said that he's gotten better over time considering he began exploring LGBT characters (although, not that well but ya know he tried lol) and different women characters in his novels, but then "Men Without Women" was one of his most recent publications lol so it kinda killed his improvement...

    • @sophiestelfox7544
      @sophiestelfox7544 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@murakamireads Yech I wasn't sure when Men without Women was published - but your right, it killed his improvement. It's a shame because I was really enjoying his writing. Most of the stories in Men without Women felt not finished - understanding I know they were only short stories but he really did a great job of pulling me into the environments he created :D

    • @murakamireads
      @murakamireads  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sophiestelfox7544 I agree! I'm not a big fan of short stories cause I always have this feeling that they're stories that aren't quite done? Murakami short stories are some of the only I've read, but they're definitely not my favorite of his works :( I think he's much better in long form
