Rescuing a kitten on a busy street

  • We found this feral mom and her kitten on a busy street in Brooklyn. With the help of a TNR volunteer (+ colony caretaker) and foster volunteer, Le Tigre is now enjoying a wonderful life. Since her mom was feral, she was spayed and returned back to her outdoor home.
If you want to help get a kitten rescued, but you’re not able to foster, try to spend time with them outside during meal times, while you’re figuring out next steps. You can essentially begin the socialization process while they are still outside, by earning their trust every day.

My sweet baby Grover was about 4 months old, living behind a dumpster when I trapped him for TNR. He's a gorgeous fluffy grey cat (looks like a Nebelung mix), so I thought if I could socialize him he'd be snapped up for adoption. It took over 2 months before he would come out from under the bed, but my boyfriend and I gave him time, patience, and encouragement. As you probably guessed, he's a foster fail who lives a happy, pampered life in his forever home with us!

The mom is a baby herself. THIS SHOWS THE IMPORTANCE OF TNR! Such a shame it's not a widespread concern or resources aren't available to everyone or at a lower cost to make people want to be able to help more. Instead only through over booked and limited programs that have to be sought out instead of being common knowledge throughout a community is so frustrating.

This! I completely agree, and wish there were more resources, more accessible, and more widely know. And of course that more people cared to step forward and take part in rescuing and caring for these precious ones.💕💗

@@bellamymalleb Very True - Without TNR - those evil cat meat shops, and poachers from the cat meat trade will prosper, and multiply faster than you think. They also consider cats and kittens as FOOD instead of as pets. This is all caused by UNCHECKED IMMIGRATION !!! since they came from their old country seeking US citizenship, but refuses to abandon their old traditional eating habits from their former nation they emigrated from. THIW's. See - th-cam.com/video/vzf4-bMXNhY/w-d-xo.html & this - th-cam.com/video/X_heJneIQXM/w-d-xo.html to see how feral and stray and abandoned cats are no longer safe from this trade anymore.

Fostering is really really great, but I would like to highlight unsung heroes of these stories: colony caretakers, who help cats outside to survive before someone can take care of them. They are not mentioned very often, but I think they are still doing quite valuable work. Thank you.

I was told about 3 abandoned kittens living outside, with no mom in sight, back in November 2021. Unfortunately they were just outside the socialization window, so I TNRd two of the sibs while a third who seemed more comfortable with people was taken by a foster. All female--just imagining how flooded the neighborhood would have been with new kittens if I hadn't learned of them, you can imagine. The remaining sibs were extremely afraid of humans and stayed out of sight when I fed them. I couldn't find any place that would take two feral 5 month old kittens, and winter was predicted to be rough.
It was. I lost two of my friendly ferals in the nearby colony after one particularly bad ice/snow storm. Yet somehow both kittens survived. Every day I would inch closer to them as they ate, not moving or making any sound, forcing them to accept my presence. After 3 months, I got my first touch. And about a month ago, I was able to fully pet and scratch both kittens. They greet me with loud mews and purrs, rushing to me for pets every time I see them.
I share this to point out that socializing feral kittens is possible, but it takes a long, long time and a lot of patience. And these cats have never been inside, so they still may never be house pets. This is why when resources are limited, sometimes you have to choose to let them go. All cats deserve care and kindness, even if they don't want us around.

I was caretaker of a feral mom and her offspring. The mom, some tomcats, and all but 2 kittens were spayed/neutered. One kitten, a litter of 2, was about 5 months old. I had trapped his brother who was socialized and adopted. One day I knelt at the door and opened it as he was whining loudly. He came right into my arms. (I had only pet him in the early days of his mom bringing them to eat by reaching out the door.) I had to keep him in a large dog kennel until he was free of worms. I took him to the bathroom for play. 1st time he was afraid to be that room. 2nd time, cautious. 3rd time, just fine. He has been in 3 years now. Quite the lap cat and has never tried to go outside.
You can build on experience, but cats are such individuals. Another offspring about a year old demanded pets when I was outside. He walked into a carrier and I brought him in. He would not eat. Did not want to be pet. I had to release him to his brothers outside to whom he was very bonded and they happily lived outside with food and shelter. Sadly he and many others died by car or unknown cause before age 2.

I rescued a kitten last October who was completely feral, to say the least. Wouldn’t let us near him. I googled what to do and started withholding food till he ate in front of me. Worked like a charm. Now he’s a total love bug. I was forced to take in a blind kitten last month. I really didn’t want another one, but I couldn’t leave her on the street. Sad, but she’s so fragile and obviously, who is going to give her a home if not for me.?😂

I lost my special boy about a week ago. It hurts like hell and I miss him so much. We had him 12 years and he was old but there will always be a hole in my life without him. He was so incredibly loving and friendly and caring and I couldn’t have wished for a better companion through everything.
Watching videos like this are bittersweet, he was a stray before we took him in but looking back he rescued us more than we did him.

Min -- Sometimes new strays find you. Or give yourself a little time and adopt from a shelter or rescuer. I've had several cats over the years and a few who were extra special. Each cat is unique, so you'll find a new cat who's very different and special in his or her own way. What we learn from our pets can help future pets, and they can help us get through it.

Agree with the others - it is a hard pill to swallow. Sincere sympathy...
I've lost some rather young and some older. Two were lost about 18 months apart, just before the pandemic. Oct 2020 my not-quite 22 yo passed on... She was with me over 21 years! I wanted to bring in more after the first 2 losses, but she was never a fan of other cats and needed more of my attention/care in the last year.
Never think of taking in another cat or 2 as trying to replace the lost one... They are not replaceable, each is such an individual... Think of it as giving another cat(s) or kitten(s) a good home, a chance to enjoy life!
You honor your cat's memory, but help another or a few!! I'm currently trying to find a bonded pair, non-kitten, to add to the gang. Doesn't bring those lost back, but it does bring more joy in!

I have tamed up a few feral kittens and found a good way of managing them around my other cats was to put them in a large dog crate high up on the table in the living room area. I found that being able to see and experience their new environment from the safety of the cage seemed to calm them and also make them feel comfortable with their surroundings, new sounds, the rhythm of daily life etc.
It created a barrier between them and the other cats while still allowing them to share a space 🙂

They're totally wild and unapproachable, but we help them out with food and water. There's very few strays where we live. We'll see how all this plays out. We have 5 resident cats, one of which ws a former stray who gets pretty worked up when they come around. The others don't seem to mind at all.

It made all the difference, and I even went through a second round of biweekly (for about 6 or 7 months, I think, it was so long ago) shots a year later to make it stick. It stuck. Flonase also worked very well for me in the meantime because it blocks receptors in the nose. Great stuff. I hope you'll find a way one day to adopt a cat, or maybe two. I hope for you that you will be able to experience the great joy of living with a sweet, curious, comforting, hilarious kitty. My cats were among the greatest loves of my life. ❤️🙂

Sometimes it makes my heart ache, but motivates me to try to help. My neighbors recently humanely trapped a kitten about 3 months old. They already have 2 small kittens they trapped and are now foster fails. I have a 2 yr old tuxedo I adopted from the shelter when he was 8 weeks. BUT, I took the stray kitten they trapped. It has and is a challenge to win his trust. I'm being very patient with him and he is slowly coming around. Poor baby, I can't imagine how life was for him on the streets. But he is now safe and part of our family and he brings us all joy....my mischievous little Ginger boy.

How terrible for you. I do hope you find her. She may have been picked up by another family with no idea of who owns her. Keep trying and good luck!

Thank you, Flatbush Cats for your inspirational work! Your videos pushed me to follow my dad's footsteps: to become a veterinarian. I hope as I gain this title I can help with the cat population crisis.

Some feral seeming cats can become comfortable house cats. It took probably 5 years for my son kitty to come inside, but he's so happy and content. (He loves kisses and cuddles!😸) He would flee from me even at 20ft away in the beginning. I did everything at his pace, how close I got, how long I stayed near him, etc. It gives me hope for other babies who could become housecats, too.😻🥰💗

I have a new kitten that an outside cat who lives in my neighborhood brought me 3 of her babies a few months ago. They were about 2 months old. I trapped them easily and brought them inside. I ended up keeping one to add to my other house cats and found a home for the other 2. It didn't take but a day for the older cats to start accepting him and now he is in charge. I have 2 boys and 2 girls. I love them all. I wish I could have. Kept them all but 4 total is my limit. 😻😻😻😻

Thank you for doing what you do. If I was close I’d take the little tuxedo - I lost mine to illness 2 years ago. I now have a Maine coon mix but would love to get him a playmate.
I have TNR’d a couple of cats, rescued and adopted a couple. One of the rescues just ran up to me, even though she was from a colony. She was the sweetest kitten and I’m sorry I got her adopted, I should have kept her. ❤️🐈‍⬛
