- This episode of Good Bad Flicks is about the horror film Stay Alive. Stay Alive is an excellent movie that was almost ruined by it's producers. Originally intended to be an R rated film, when it was released in theaters it was cut to PG-13. I take a look at the vastly superior unrated cut and point out the many differences between the two versions.

Disney wanted to get back into the Horror Business so all their horror movies are PG-13. They soon realize it isn't working and buy out Marvel.
In fact, Disney's focus is pretty much only on Marvel and Star Wars, to the point where they completely fucked over their distribution deal with Dreamworks (not the animation portion, that's an entirely different company now), sold off the Studio Ghibli rights to GKids and Universal, and, aside from helping to produce the new M Night movie Split, left their Touchstone Pictures label dormant.
Well Disney owns abc.... Disney owns other production companies and studios.

Oh, my god, this explains a lot. I love this movie so much and could never figure out why so many people reference it as being bad. Granted, I've only ever seen the "unrated" version.

Just decided to buy this movie. Only like $5 on Amazon. I saw it back when it came out on DVD for the first time. I thankfully never saw the horrific theatrical version and only the Director's Cut. Thanks for reminding me about this gem, as I fully remember enjoying it!
Kyle Parkhurst it has gained a bit of a cult following thanks to the unrated DVD. A shame we'll never see the "complete" version since Disney cut their budget and wouldn't let them finish some of the effects

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember back when the movie came out, the director or studio who made it said there was going to be a Stay Alive game. It wouldn't be based on the movie though, but the actual game the characters played. If that's true, that would have been awesome.
Wow, that is probably the biggest difference I've ever seen between a PG-13 and R-rated version. Especially the part where they cut out the programmer's plot all-together. No wonder people were confused!
Damnit Disney, stay away from horror.

My mum got me the R-Rated version on DVD for my birthday a few years back because she knew I was a big horror fan and a gamer and thought I would love it. I remember thinking it was kinda dumb but super fun to watch. I didn't know there was a version that had so many cuts so this was an interesting watch.

Considering that their version has almost nothing in common with Bathory (not even the more lurid vampire connections common to most of her pop cultural appearances) it would honestly have been better if they just made up an original name for their villain.
Cecil, I'm so glad you made this video. I remember seeing Stay Alive a long time ago on a pay channel. I thought it had a lot of potential but ultimately didn't like it. Upon seeing your video, I decided to track down the unrated version and I really enjoyed the movie. Keep up the good work!

Remember it was Disney that screwed up Stay Alive. The movie was gang raped by a family friendly multi-billion dollar gigantic film corporate empire owning nearly every studio, networks, franchises, amusement park, TV channels, music labels and merchandise known to man all bought by the magical world of Disney now showing on the Disney Channel and Disney+ coming soon to a computer near you. But wait see Stay Alive in VR and 4D to get the immersive experience only at Disneyland and World. Ok I'm done.
I still remember the CONTRA 100 lives code from 89 or 90 (whenever it first came out) up, ×2 down×2 left,right×2 B, A start select start for 2 players.

The inside of the house is huge and the guide was telling us the story about when the house was build and the story behind it. After watching the review I realized that the story is still creepy.
Try re-watching Malcolm in the Middle. I used to hate it when I was younger, but its actually a really good show

+Mark Kramer I lot of people did. When it aired on FOX back in the day during football season. The fan favorite FUTARAMA got preempted for the game quite often, and MALCOM IN THE MIDDLE would air instead. MITM ended up sucking off much of the ratings of FUTARAMA, resulting in FOX booting the show, with MITM lasting at least a few more seasons. Although personally I thought neither show was all that funny ,and were overrated. Thus I really never had a problem seeing them go.
And Frankie pretty much plays the same character.

It's possible because that show was boring and unfunny.
I can tell you that the "Burning Man" episode was some of the best TV ever.
@radioblueheart they filmed the entire movie but the studio wasn't happy so they rewrote almost 80% of the film. They removed some characters, while others they enhanced their parts. Then they tried to mash the whole thing together and wondered why it was an incomprehensible mess.
Interesting, I had no idea there was a cut version! When the DVD was released here in Germany back then it was the full version so that's what I've been watching. Always thought it's a pretty fun movie.
This reminds me a little of the 'FeardotCom' story, where to get a lower rating, in this case an R, great chunks of plot was cut. However because 'FeardotCom' was a US, UK, German and Luxembourg co production the uncut version was released in Europe. This is why if you look at user reviews it normally looks as if half the people are reviewing one movie and the other half a different movie. Because in a sense they are. (one other rumour about this film is that the scene with Gordon Peters was cut entirely for the US release, rather than just cutting the implied BJ under the table from it, because of objections that Peters was a British actor flown in for three days to play an American rather than using an American. Hence you lose the important plot point that explains the whole movie.)
Anyway you should explore the international version of 'FeardotCom'
I remember renting this DVD when It came out, the dvd had a bonus feature that had a character creation in it, just like the game
I did a semester at Westwood, assuming it's the same place, I can assure you that it's a terrible school and I got out of there asap. They teach you the bare minimum you need to know. I went there for criminal justice and left when I found out that Chicago PD was not accepting Westwood grads and the school was trying to cover it up.
Dammit, now you tell me. Would've liked to know yesterday that there was another version...
I love this movie, I haven't started the video yet, but I'm sure it will be good. This movie was really unique and the whole concept was an awesome idea. I'm also glad they didn't make a sequel or prequel. It was great just how it is.

So many good horror movies cut to a PG-13 rating. I heard that the Bye Bye Man and Darkness Falls fell into this poor nightmarish scenario. It's about as bad as Rated R action flicks getting the PG-13 ratings treatment.

2:20 "completely neutered version of the film"? That is what they did to Friday The 13th part 7 - - boy that movie's theatrical version was so dull it is easily the worst film of the franchise till Jason X.

I never got into it. I thought the mom was really annoying. Sitcoms in general just aren't my thing. I know a lot of people liked the show but it wasn't for me.

I was 4 when this movie came out I believe my brothers bought it when u was 6 I watched this with them and had to sleep with my mom in my parents bedroom,the movie was terrifying gave me trauma for a short while

i love video game based or themed movies, as i am a total gameaholic, though i havent really gotten into pc gaming much due to the fact i've never been able to get my hands on an optimally customized gaming pc, so i'm mostly a console gamer.
This exact premise was used in an episode of The X Files.

Am I the only one who thinks that the building in the sweeping, establishing shot at the beginning, looks just like the place where Gon, Killua, and the other Hunters, fought the Chimera Ants? Just something I happened to notice..
Well AFAIK HxH took that scene inspiration from House. and House was the inspiration for RE1. and this took inspiration for RE.

I like all of them in various degrees. 1-2 being my favorites. I did a very long serious look at the first Silent Hill movie and all the tie ins with the games over on my website. Haven't been able to post it here due to some...issues. However, the link for the site is in the "about" if you want to check it out. It is quite good if I do say so myself.
I haven't seen this since I was a kid, but I enjoyed it then. I had no idea it was supposed to be more fleshed out. I'd appreciate that now. Is there a director's cut?

Fun trivia: African actress Alice pronounces her name "KREE-guh."She's a generous, sweet lady and if you haven't seen her in Ghost Story, do it! She was also in my friend Mick's Sleepwalkers, which, if you haven't reviewed it, please do. Mick is one of THE sweetest people you could ever meet. :). The movie isn't perfect but I hear it was a fun shoot.
CarrieAnne Betts Excellent! I think the first time I saw her was in Sleepwalkers. Great film, a shame it gets bashed. Gotta love a movie where the hero is a cat. I do plan on covering it at some point. If you talk to Mick tell him She Wolf of London is criminally underrated.

I think I viewed the theatrical version on cable; wonder why I didn't like it. I'll check out the unrated version of this film. Wow, an important plot point CANNOT be removed! That reminds me of the 1981 film "Looker", in which a very important plot point was removed as well.

@HorrorFan382 I liked H20 a lot. I thought they did a really nice job of tying up the whole series and giving it an end. Then they went and ruined it by retconning the whole thing with Resurrection.
I guess I'm still confused as to why the spirit of the Countess is killing people who died playing a game about her lmao. The Countess herself was explained but not her motive to kill the gamers.

haha. i didn't know that there was a n R version! Gotta find it. Sad you didn't mention the rose bush. it added a good distinction to the story between the "game world' and the "real world" and the effecting between them.

I think stay alive was the first horror film I watched and I still love it today.
This reminds me of a game called Warbutt, where if you die in the game you die in real life.
the sound track for this movie was amazing
I stumbled upon this some years ago in Blockbusters [UK, it's bankrupt and long gone now] and thought, heck it, let's try it and see what it's like. It's one of the few films that genuinely unsettles me, with the face in the smoke, the shadow on the wall, and little details like that in the backgrounds. I first watched it in my dad's flat, and I already hated flats, and I have now decided, I am never living in a flat/apartment if I can help it 'cause this was just a bad experience xD I NEED to get my hands on that directors/unrated cut though now, 'cause it always pissed me off how they blame it on the ghost making the game -.-
The unrated cut has some partially unfinished effects (because the studio kneecapped them) but its still a much more complete version that the PG-13. I'm not sure if its available in the UK but I know the US unrated DVD isn't too hard to come by.

Sadly, i have only seen the butchered version.. I would love to see the original as i love this movie. I will definitely agree that the best line was from frankie in the van and it is just a famous line for any gamer. Where can i find the original version?
RipperBravoSix If you want to purchase it, look for the red cover. (the blue cover is the PG-13 version) Netflix has it for rent and I'm sure the uncut version is out there in...other places.
