Some of my favorite science fiction films are the smaller budgeted ones. The Cube is another low-budget Canadian film that I like (sequel is kinda meh). I'll certainly check out Levels. Werewolves looks good too.

"The Purge with fur" -- that strikes me as hilarious on so many levels -- and most of them not related to what you intended!!!! 😄😄😄

I appreciate modest science fiction, fantasy and adventure films for what I perceive to be their sincerity, emphasis on story telling and being mostly one-and-done projects. Granted, when a big budget, A-list cast movie achieves excellence, it’s at the top of the heap but that seems to be an increasingly rare event.

It's a great time for small and medium movies. Companies like A24 know genre and they deliver the goods. They cover horror and science fiction really well.

Your description of “Alien Romulus “ as Alien’s greatest hits is SPOT ON! It proved my assertion that ( original films are from inspiration, but sequels are from desperation.)

After the second Alien movie, it was like going back to a failed relationship. 'Maybe it'll work this time, this time it'll be different.' Yes, there were some great times early on, but those days are gone forever.

Re Werewolves, they did something similar on an episode of H2O Just Add Water - swap werewolves for Aussie mermaids...and without machine guns. As a rule, I never read reviews on IMDB or, heaven forbid, Rotten Tomatoes. Neither of these 'authorities' have any credibility in my book. Both movies sound great Terry. Cheers.

My pleasure, Peter. As I review, I never watch reviews until after I do my thing, and even then I don't do it often. There are reviewers I trust implicitly but they don't troll on IMDB.

Yep. Totally agree. I just watched The Flash and it was garbage. Fast forwarded through most of it and what I did watch was just a mish mash of CGI, cultural references and terrible dialogue. What a waste of time. Like you said the small movies seem to be where it's at - Landscape with invisible hand, The Kid Detective etc. I'll keep an eye out for these two. Also Winnipeg in the middle of winter is like being on an ice planet so good choice by the filmmakers! 😉 Lol. Thanks Terry! I'll probably drop by for your New year Eve stream so see you then😊🎉

The Flash for me is such a train wreck I don't mind watching it. I got the 4K dead cheaply.
Yeah, small movies can take big risks and increasingly I love that about them.

I definitely agree on the point that smaller films are usually better than something carrying a nine-figure budget. Though I have to say I hated Werewolves, I thought they absolutely squandered an awesome premise. It felt like a 90s straight to VHS flick. The practical werewolves were kind of cool but not enough to save it for me

I prefer small budget movies with original ideas, even if the movie isn't great. I've watched a few in the past months..I don't remember the names of all of them, but I did enjoy watching them. One is "Everything Beautiful is Far Away", another is "Ink" and a 3rd is " Einstein's God Model"...there are others as well

I never really look at the reviews from the ‘professional’ websites. I like to make my own mind up. I often disagree with them anyway, but that may be because I am a little bit different in the first place! 😂 I do want to see Werewolves at some stage.

Not much of a fan of the Alien sequels (I think that I only saw Aliens 2) -- but I really do like the original. I saw it at it's general US premier in 1979 at the tender age of 16, at the Uptown Theater in Washington DC -- the largest curved screen in the DC area (very similar to an IMAX screen). Pretty sure that the Alien release that I saw was a 70mm print and 4/6-track Dolby. I was on the front row of the balcony (I waited like 2 hours to get in to the theater) -- and I had to turn my head to see the screen/image from one side to the other side -- it was like I couldn't escape the Xenomorph -- really enhanced the suspense. And the chest-burst scene was practically 3D. This theater hosted the world premiere showings of 2001:A Space Odyssey, Jesus Christ Superstar and other movies -- my dad took me to a release of 2001 in the early 1970s at the Uptown -- amazing! Unfortunately the theater closed in 2020 but the building is not slated for demo.

Sounds like you enjoyed it a lot more than I did but I had similar experiences with other films. Most recently, The Substance.

@@terrytalksmovies -- Right -- we're going to enjoy things differently, and in different situations -- I am sure that the immersive experience of seeing Alien at that specific theater had a lot to do with my impression of the movie (when I see it on 'TV' it definitely does not recapture the suspense of that original viewing). As you note -- there is a *LOT* to be said for seeing many (but not all) motion pictures in a real movie theater....

Yes, Alien: Romulus is a greatest hits collection along with redoing the worst ending in the franchise. Not sure why it's praised. These both sound worthy, I have questioned IMDB ratings although usually they aren't 4 points off., A good small scale werewolf film I saw recently is Howl (2015).

Werewolves (2024) has bloody awful scores at IMDb (4.6/10), Rotten Tomatoes (Critics 50% and Audiences 44%) and Letterboxd (2.3/5). Just saying...

    • @terrytalksmovies

IMDB is a shitty barometer for movies. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a much better score

    • @RamZar50
      @RamZar50 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@terrytalksmovies I look at all the aforementioned scores and read a couple of “unbiased” reviews. There’s a lot of bias, subjectivity and just hate. Some reviewers don’t even watch the whole movie or rate it based on past movies of cast/crew. It’s not just reviewers but also audiences (some paid) who are biased.
